December Gadget Reviews Roundup 2014

Lazada Philippines

Here we go guys, our last Gadget Reviews Roundup for 2014. This includes the ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite, LG G Watch R, Sony Xperia Z3, BlackBerry Passport, Cherry Mobile Selfie, Nikon D810, and a few products from Bose. Check out all the gadgets we reviewed in December 2014.

Full Reviews

O+ 8.17

Having a form factor that deviates from the usual cheap-looking plastic, the O+ 8.17 isn’t something that will shy away when placed side-by-side other phones with bigger names. For the price of Php10,995, you get a pretty good deal that comes with Sennheiser in-ear plugs and 8GB Sandisk microSD card for additional storage.

Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph

We like the Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph, because it’s the local company telling us that it’s not only interested in bringing only Android to the Philippines. With a 10.1-inch Windows 8.1 convertible coming from Cherry Mobile, people may finally be able to get some work done for just Php11,999.

Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth speaker

The Bose SoundLink Color is an amazing speaker that comes in a portable package. It doesn’t have fancy features like waterproofing or NFC but it has a nice build and youthful appearance which very well compliment the sound quality it produces. Although small, it is loud and has a good battery life.

Bose QC25 Noise-cancelling Headphones

The Bose QuietComfort 25, assuming you’re into constantly listening to music, is one of those headphones that would be on your Christmas list for two reasons: One is because of all the niceties you’ll get when you buy it, and the other one is because it’s steeply-priced at Php20,000. For an average person, it’s not something you’d see and decide to buy instantly.

Bose SoundLink On-Ear Bluetooth Headphones

To conclude, the Bose SoundLink On-Ear Bluetooth headphones is an amazing wireless audio device that can produce great sounds. Regardless of what type of music you listen to this headphone can deliver it very well. In addition, it’s portable, comfortable, has Bluetooth connectivity, can accept calls, and has a long battery life. It’s a bit expensive though at Php13,500 but you won’t be disappointed.

LG G3 Stylus Dual

The LG G3 Stylus Dual is a smartphone with a decent performance. It has a great camera, a crisp and loud speaker, a great battery life, and OS functions same of the flagship device. If you’re eyeing to buy the G3 but you are out of budget, this is definitely a good alternative.

Happy Mobile Oracle

The Happy Mobile Oracle is a very capable device with a nice looking design, thin but sturdy body, better than average display, decent performance and Android KitKat. However it is ruined by the very limited non-expandable storage, ugly default UI skin, and below average battery life. And for its asking price of Php9,999 that’s too steep given its shortcomings.

Sony Xperia Z3

The Xperia Z3 remains to be one of the most gorgeous and well-designed smartphone ever made. The great hardware, impressive performance, connectivity with other Sony devices and appliances are all packed in a sleek, weather-proof, glass sandwich body. One can no longer ask for anything more.

O+ 360

O+ and its rear touch technology on its 360 smartphone series is taking a good track — the feature can be useful for those who want a distraction-free reading by offering navigation at the back. This also, however, proved to be a bit of a nuisance for the common screen-swiping Juan whose experience may be ruined when he’s not careful on what his fingers are resting upon the back of the device. At Php6,395, the 360 is a good deal if you do not mind having bad audio quality and a measly 2000mAh battery capacity.

Cherry Mobile Infinix Pure XL

The Cherry Mobile Infinix Pure XL has a respectable design and build quality, ample screen size with decent quality, and a good camera and battery life. However, its Php6,999 price tag puts it in a rather awkward spot between dirt-cheap octa-cores like the Phoenix X1 or the Excite 501o and other more premium offerings like Happy Mobile Oracle or the new Kata i4.

Luxa2 Groovy W Wireless Charging Speaker

The Luxa2 Groovy W is a wireless speaker that can definitely be a travel buddy. It’s not that compact but its functionality regarding charging batteries is a good backup plan for your devices when no outlet is in the area. Sound quality is good, but with minor gripes. It also gives you a choice in terms of connectivity whether to use Bluetooth or NFC although in our case, NFC didn’t work at all.

Nikon D810

There’s not a lot you can do to improve something that’s already great to begin with. It’s a double-edged sword for Nikon; on one hand they’re already off to great start and would only have to make minor refinements for the D810, on the other hand, they can only do so much with the next iteration that some D800/D800E users may not find the need to upgrade to the latest model.

Quick Reviews

LG L Fino

It is a well-balanced phone with smooth performance and fantastic software touches. Though, for Php 7,990, it doesn’t have an HD screen, HD video recording, and an HD front camera. Basically, everything high definition is removed from the L Fino.

ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite

The Lite version of the Zenfone 5 is a good alternative to other local phones in the same price range. But if you would compare it to the original Zenfone 5, we think it lost a fair amount of traits that made the Zenfone 5 a hot device in the market. Priced at Php5,595, you only save Php900 from getting the Zenfone 5 that has HD display, 2GB RAM, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. On the other hand, you get more juice with its bigger battery.

Bose SoundDock XT

The Bose SoundDock XT is definitely aimed mainly at Apple users, with its capability of playing music from other devices only coming as secondary. It’s got limited connectivity, lacking AirPlay or even just Bluetooth; but will try to win you over with its attractive design. Portability is also out of the question since it relies solely on cabled power. Sound quality is overall impressive, considering the speaker is not that big.

BlackBerry Passport

All-in-all, the BlackBerry Passport is a solid release. It’s powerful, nicely designed and carries a physical keyboard that we rarely see these days. If you are willing to shell out Php35,790 for a unit, then that should say how much you really like this device.

LG G Watch R

The LG G Watch R is powered by a Snapdragon 400 chip with 512MB RAM and Android Wear . It is also water and dust resistant, giving you some level of confidence whenever the watch gets the occasional splash. With an SRP of Php13,990, we feel it’s a bit above the usual price for a smartwatch. We still think the G Watch R is a looker of a smartwatch.

Swans M10 2.1 Speakers

The Swans M10 is one of those speakers that looks really simple and straightforward, but don’t let that fool you as it’s got a decent sound reproduction for both music and movies. Volume can go loud but turning it up to maximum creates slight distortion so just keep it at a nice level to enjoy it. Sound quality-wise, it could be compared to Microlab and Creative speakers.

DTC Fiesta Plus

The DTC Fiesta Plus is a capable device that is aimed at users who want a smartphone with a large screen for watching videos or playing games at an affordable price. Unfortunately, it’s running an aging Android Jelly Bean OS which is a real downer considering that buyers are now expecting KitKat for a phone with this kind of hardware.

Luxa2 Groovy T Magic Boom Box Speaker

If you’re looking for a simple music player that effectively does its job, the Luxa2 Groovy T is one of the devices to consider. It’s also competitively-priced at just Php750 so those minor niggles aren’t really something to complain about. It will be available starting this January 2015.

Happy Mobile D-Lite

For the price of Php2,699, the Happy Mobile D-Lite is a great phone. It has specs that perform decently for its price, great audio recording, clean Android 4.4 KitKat and a beautiful and solid design. Unless you are willing to add more to get things like a better display, the D Lite does just fine.

DTC Jupiter Plus

The DTC Jupiter Plus is a decent device that with an interesting design, easy-to-hold body, and acceptable performance. However, it carries a high SRP of Php7,990 for a Jelly Bean-powered device. Even with their limited time offer of Php5,990, it will have a hard time competing with affordable offerings from other brands like the ASUS Zenfone 5 series which is priced under Php7k.

AKG Y40 On-Ear Headphones

The AKG Y40 is a cool-looking pair of headphones that aims to please bass lovers with a limited budget. It packs a good punch when it comes to lows but not so much on mids and highs. It doesn’t offer well-balanced sounds but if you like your tracks bassy or mostly listen to club and hip hop music, then the Y40 is a decent headphone to have.

Cherry Mobile Selfie

The Cherry Mobile Selfie is a product of today’s trend, especially here in the Philippines. As the selfie capital of the world, it’s understandable why the company designed a smartphone dedicated to imaging. The Selfie is a device with a good and attractive form factor, a fluid UI, and cameras that take good photos even in low-light areas.

Pioneer FREEme Bluetooth Speaker

The Pioneer FREEme is a good portable Bluetooth speaker with a classy design and appeal with decent sound quality. However, if you’re looking for something worthy to play your tracks for a small party this is not it. It’s great for boardrooms and offices thanks to its hands-free voice call feature. It’s also a good addition to your home office or living room for some casual music listening. And due to its portable size, you can easily bring it with you during trips.

September Gadget Reviews Roundup 2014

September is one of the most exciting months when it comes to consumer tech. We had the IFA in Berlin followed by Apple’s announcement of the new iPhones. The past month has also brought us a lot of interesting gadgets to review. This includes the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Huawei Ascend P7, Xiaomi Redmi 1S, and a number of Cherry Mobile devices. Take a look at our Gadget Reviews Round up for September 2014.

Full Reviews

Huawei Ascend P7

ascend_p7_front

With an SRP of Php20,990, the Huawei Ascend P7 is in for some competition. The above 20k price tag can be a tough sell because of the occasional lag during our usage. But if you are in for good design, LTE, and a good selfie camera, the P7 can be a good companion.

Xiaomi Redmi 1S

redmi 1s_4

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S definitely sets a new benchmark for smartphones in this price range. It has the looks, quality, performance, and features that normally you will find in higher-priced smartphones. It’s not perfect and obviously has its limitations, but at Php5,599, it’s still absolutely a steal.

Cherry Mobile Magnum S

Cherry Mobile Magnum S(web)

We think that your ten grand will be money well-spent on the CM Magnum S. From both the design and performance standpoints, this handset is easily one of the best locally-branded smartphones in the sub-Php10k segment. Nuff said.

Cherry Mobile Pulse

cm pulse_6

The Cherry Mobile Pulse is the company’s most affordable offering at Php6,499. Normally we’d see a smartphone with mediocre configuration for that kind of price, but not with the Pulse. For under Php7k, you can now get a dual-SIM smartphone with a good build, a crisp and tough display, and kind of performance that is both good for work and play.

Cherry Mobile Ultra On The Go

Cherry Mobile Ultra On The Go

During our time with the Cherry Mobile Ultra On The Go, we’re happy to say that it performed as expected. It picked up 4G/LTE signal when it’s available and it has enough juice to last you a fair amount of time. Lastly, it’s one thousand pesos cheaper than the LTE Pocket Wi-Fis that Globe and Smart is currently offering, and it’s open-line too so can use LTE-provisioned SIM cards from either of the two telcos mentioned above.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One

cosmos-one

Cherry Mobile’s success in the local scene is primarily based on the fact that their devices have decent specs and are competitively priced. Both statements hold true for the Cosmos One which pretty much have the same configuration and price as the CM Pulse but with a slightly bigger screen.

Kata M2

kata m2_6

The Kata M2 is a very capable phablet with an affordable price. However, if you’re into graphic-intensive mobile gaming and demand really snappy performance, the M2 isn’t exactly the ideal Android device for that.

Apple iPhone 6

philippines-iphone6

Aside from the increased display size, we did not see anything else significant when upgrading from the iPhone 5S to the iPhone 6. The iPhone 5S is as smooth, flawless and beautiful as the iPhone 6. Actually we wished Apple could have just retained the design and thickness of the iPhone 5S and increased the size so there’s more room for a Lithium-polymer battery for better battery life.

ASUS ROG Crossblade Ranger

ASUS Crossblade Ranger(web)

It took ASUS quite some time to release an ROG motherboard for the FM2+ socket, but when they did, they made sure that they got all the bases covered and that all the waiting will not be laid to waste. That is exactly what the company did with the ROG Crossblade Ranger which, in our opinion, is currently the best FM2+ motherboard that money can buy.

Veho Muvi K2

Veho-Muvi-K2-5

At Php13,995, we still consider this a bit pricey compared to the Php5K Playground Cam100. Video quality for both isn’t that far off, and you get more accessories for the Cam100. The advantage with the K2, though, is that it has Wi-Fi and a housing that can go more than three times as deep as the GoPro’s. As those are its strengths, it also has some shortcomings in terms of its mounting system and auto white balance. Plus, with GoPro set to announce a cheaper HERO along the HERO4, the Muvi K2 will surely have a new competition in the mid-range category for its Php14K price tag.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus

iphone6plusph

Either you will like the iPhone 6 Plus because of its size and performance or you will avoid it because it’s a bit bulky and unwieldy to use and perhaps just settle for the iPhone 6.

Quick Reviews

Garmin VIRB Elite

Garmin_VIRB_Elite_1

We have a love-hate relationship with the VIRB Elite – we didn’t like how it somehow looks like a vitamin bottle, but it’s for this same reason that operating the camera is a very refreshing experience. And while its screen is useless in the dark it saves up precious battery life for more recording time. Lastly, it offers new functionalities on top of being just an action camera.

RedFox CnL M1X speakers

Redfox-CnL-4

The Redfox CnL is a handy piece of speaker that easily tags along with you. When it comes to the sound quality we had little complains, but other things like build quality left us wanting more.

RedFox WizPad 5

redfox wizpad 5_1

The Wizpad 5 is a very capable Windows 8.1 tablet downplayed by the generic build and flimsy keyboard. Redfox also also failed to include its own charger in the package which adds to the cons. With that in mind, the Wizpad 5 is definitely going to be a tough sell considering that its competitors have better offerings within the same price range.

July Gadget Reviews Roundup 2014

We’re finally done with the month of July and that means a quick look at all the reviews we’ve finished last month. This includes the LG G3, ASUS Zenfone 5 and 6, Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II, Acer Aspire Switch 10, and a Tegra Note 7 tablet. Take a look at our Gadget Reviews Roundup for the month of July.

ASUS Zenfone 5

zenfone5-02

With almost nothing to complain about, the ZenFone 5 is one of those phones that say “premium but affordable devices are possible”. Hardware and software combined, the ZenFone is very polished. However, we do have a few gripes with the overall performance, and we’re hoping an update comes to fix that, but apart from what we mentioned, this is one affordable smartphone that’s greatly put together.

Lenco BTS-110 Bluetooth Speaker

Lenco BTS-110(web)

Truth be told, the Lenco BTS-110 doesn’t bring anything new to the table that we haven’t seen on other Bluetooth speakers in the past. That is not to say though that it’s not worthy of your time and money, I mean the sound output alone, not to mention the lack of distortion even at high volume, is worth more than half of the price of admission.

We think that the subpar sound range is somewhat forgivable considering its price and the fact that it is a portable speaker, not a full-sized sound system. Still, we think that audiophiles will not give this speaker a second look, but its portable size and acceptable sound performance may just be enough to win over the casual listeners.

Lenovo A526

Lenovo A526 Main (Web)

Despite of its relatively cheap price tag (Php5,999), we still feel that some consumers, especially those who are very paricular with the specs, will have a hard time grabbing the Lenovo A526 off the shelves because there are other handsets in the market with roughly the same price tag but has a better specs than this. However, the not-so-nitpicky crowd should give this handset a second look because it offers decent battery life and good overall performance without breaking the bank.

Acer Aspire Switch 10

switch10_1

To conclude, the Acer Aspire Switch 10 is an embodiment of what a new netbook should be. It has a great build, portable design, affordable price tag, and capable of multiple modes – a feature that is mostly found on more expensive laptops. Based on the pros, users like businessmen, travelers, students, and other professionals who need to do some work on the go will definitely appreciate what the Switch 10 can offer.

LG G3

lgg3-reviewphilippines

It is equivocally apparent that the LG G3 is a huge jump from its predecessor. It’s better, faster, meaner, bolder — a fitting upgrade to LG’s strong position in the flagship arena. If not for the slightly reduced battery life, we would not have any reason or qualms about not putting it ahead of the pack. It’s a drawback that has been traded against that super-clear and gorgeous display.

Don’t get us wrong. It’s still one of our top contenders and we’re impressed with the over-all results but, as they say, it’s close to impossible to really have it all in one device. Yes, it’s that close to perfection.

Homecare Fly One Tegra Note 7

TegraNote7_full

After having the Tegra Note 7 for a couple of weeks, we could say it’s not the best 7-inch tablet in the local market today. The issues of build quality, screen resolution, and speakers are to be considered when purchasing this Tegra 4 powered tablet. The good-old Nexus 7 (2013) is still the best option but it does not have a stylus and the exclusive Tegra-enchanced games. If you need Tegra 4 and a stylus for digital sketching, then you may purchase this tablet with sleeve included at Reeco for Php12,499.

Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II

Canon G1X Mark II(web)

The Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II is a good all-around compact camera that can take pictures with impressive quality and the addition of wireless functionalities further expands its capability beyond photography. However, we still think that users deserve something more for their money, particularly better battery life and improved video recording capabilities.

ASUS Zenfone 6

ASUS_Zenfone6_3

During our entire time with the Zenfone 6, it proved to be a joy to have around. The camera’s UI isn’t blazing fast but you can do so many things with its features and effects. Its spacious 6-inch 720p display also makes it enjoyable to watch videos and play games. ZenUI’s new look is definitely refreshing and makes navigation generally a breeze. For Php11,995, you get a well-built device, beefy internals, and impressive display best for multimedia usage.
