September Gadget Reviews Roundup 2015

And just like that, September is over. And to start the first week of October we’ve curated all the gadget reviews we’ve done last month. This includes the Zenfone 2 Laser, Lenovo A7000 Plus, OPPO R7 Plus, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Check out our Gadget Reviews Roundup for September 2015.

ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser

ASUS has a strong yet affordable offering with the Zenfone 2 Laser. At Php7,695 for the 5-inch ZE500KL model, and Php8,695 for the 5.5-inch, ZE550KL model, buyers can get a Lollipop-powered smartphone with a good build and design, decent display and performance, and great battery life. Add to that the more than capable 13 megapixel shooter with Laser-guided autofocus which appeals to casual shooters who demand better AF performance.

JBL Cinema SB400 Soundbar

The JBL Cinema SB400 soundbar is a solid performer. It can be easily set up with the soundbar capable of being hung or placed in front of the television, while its subwoofer (although heavy) could be situated anywhere in the room and communicate to the central speaker via Bluetooth. It is currently priced at Php29,999, and as a whole is a good investment/starting point if you’re new to setting up your own home theater.

ASUS SBW-06D2X-U External Blu-ray Writer

The ASUS SBW-06D2X-U is a well-performing external Blu-ray writer that offers a wealth of features with an eye-catching design. It doesn’t require rocket science to set up, and pretty much covers almost all of your CD/DVD/Blu-ray burning needs.

Lenovo K80

The Lenovo K80 is a good smartphone with a good display, performance, camera, and battery life. However, it is hindered with a flawed firmware and bloatware. Although it is slated to receive Android Lollipop, it is stuck in KitKat with a broken OTA updater. Like the K3 Note, it’s not officially offered in the country so you will have to rely on imported units. On the up side, it doesn’t cost much at Php9,990.

Zumi Dashboard Camera

During our time with the Zumi dashcam, we would say that it gets the job done of recording your travels decently. It’s also pretty straightforward to use and comes packed with handy features normally seen on more expensive models.

Lenovo A7000 Plus

The A7000 Plus brings to the table what we loved about the K3 Note with some improvements – good display and build, very capable processor, LTE connectivity with dual-SIM, above average battery life, a firmware optimized for our marketm and a Php7,999 price tag.

Marshall Major II Headphones

The Marshall Major II still maintained the same SRP upon launch at Php4,650. Considering its price, it still is pretty affordable for what it offers — a looker with its rugged attitude and is light to bring around. The pads sometimes strain the ears but still remains secured even when you move around. Performance-wise, we commend it for being consistent at providing balanced sound across the spectrum.

LG G4 Stylus

The LG G4 Stylus is a stylish and good-looking smartphone with a nice large display and a decent camera with Laser AF. It also comes with a stylus for those moments that you want to use it as a notepad. Although useful, the overall experience is impaired by the very limited RAM and internal storage. You can ignore this if you’re a very light user but for it’s asking price of Php10,990 it will be difficult considering that its competitors are offering better specs at a much lesser cost.

Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen)

Categorized as a budget offering from Motorola, the Moto E has advantages over similar devices in terms of software, support, and trust. It carries the brand proudly and boasts Android to perform well without having monster specifications. With a price tag of Php 6,990, which is steeper compared to competing phones, you’ll get a clearly packaged smartphone and established Motorola experience.

Bose SoundLink Mini II

Overall, the Mini II performed really well and, like its predecessor, it is well-balanced yet versatile at the same time. Regardless of what genre of music you’re playing or just using it as an external player for watching movies this tiny speaker can certainly deliver. Those who want to use it as a speakerphone will be glad as it now has that feature. Plus, it now has a longer battery life compared to its predecessor.

OPPO R7 Plus

OPPO’s R7 Plus is an all-around solid performer. It belongs to the mid-range category, but we sometimes forget that due to its premium look and smooth performance. We used it for quite a while and we came across a fluid experience of gliding from app to app, took detailed shots with natural colors using its camera, and used the phone for up to 2 days on a single charge.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

It is without a doubt that the Galaxy Note 5 is the most beautiful phablet Samsung has ever made. They certainly learned a lot from the positive reception of the Galaxy S6. Add to that the massive internal hardware upgrade they made along with some additional engineering feat.

July Gadget Reviews Roundup 2015

It’s a new month once again which means we have a new batch of gadget reviews for you guys to check out. For this roundup we have the Microsoft Surface 3, WIN ISDB-T TV Box, Cherry Mobile Flare X, and Motorola Moto X. Read our Gadget Reviews Roundup for July 2015.

Full Review

Cherry Mobile Flare X

The CM Flare X is a well-rounded smartphone that offers remarkable performance, decent image quality from its rear camera, and good battery life. Design is probably the least brightest spot of the Flare X, but even that gets a nod from us as the handset still feels sturdy and well put together despite its all-plastic make.

ASUS Strix Radeon R9 380 DirectCU II

We think that the Strix Radeon R9 380 should be on top of your list. Sure, the factory overclock is modest at best, but its rigid design and commendable cooling solution should be enough to justify the $20 premium that Asus has put on top of the reference card’s SRP.

Lenovo P70

The Lenovo P70 is a workhorse of a smartphone. It’s got a good display, very capable hardware configuration, dual-SIM with LTE connectivity, and a large battery that can last more than a day. If there’s something we didn’t like is its camera performance so don’t expect a lot if you’re very particular about this feature.

MSI GS30 2M Shadow and Gaming Dock

The MSI GS30 2M Shadow, together with its gaming dock, aims to provide a full-fledged gaming rig while still offering the option of bringing it around as a lightweight notebook to work on. Weighing in at only 1.2kg, the GS30 could easily be carried around in a backpack or simply as it is.

Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Sony’s Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is one very capable device. As far as its time with us, it was able to handle everything we threw at it and performed really well. From web-browsing, to watching movies and playing music, to playing heavy games and connecting to a PS4, the tablet came through and didn’t fail to deliver what was required of it.

HP Elitebook Folio 1020

The HP Folio 1020 is positioned to be a business-oriented ultra mobile laptop and it’s exactly what its offering with the Folio 1020. It’s beautiful, sleek and the impressive build quality makes the Folio 1020 a looker with additional bells and whistles on the side.

WIN ISDB-T TV Box

The WIN TV Box is a feature packed device that serves as a great companion to your regular TV. It’s small, can record live TV shows, and can easily play videos from your hard drive. The only limitation we see here is the current lineup of channels since not all TV stations are broadcasting in digital yet.

Microsoft Surface 3

The Surface 3 is not a laptop replacement, that one we are sure of. However, those who have been more attracted to the netbook for its affordability and portability will find the Surface 3 a welcome upgrade or replacement. It matches the performance, battery life and even the price.

Quick Review

Cherry Mobile Cubix Cube

The Cubix Cube’s claim to fame is its octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM with a price tag of only Php4,490. That’s a combination previously unheard of consider other similar hardware combo priced around Php6k to Php7k.

Motorola Moto X

The Moto X is a 5.2-inch handset with full HD AMOLED display and Gorilla Glass 3. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor which was last year’s top CPU. Completing the configuration is 2GB of RAM, a non-expandable 16GB internal storage with LTE and NFC connectivity.

June Gadget Reviews Roundup 2015

It’s July and we’re already halway through the year. And like what we always do at the end of every month, we provide you a summary of all the gadgets we’ve reviewed like the LG G4, Lenovo K3 Note, Huawei P8, and the ASUS ZenBook UX305. Take a look at the Gadget Reviews Roundup for June 2015.

Full Review:

LG G4

LG tries to put a different twist in creating their next flagship smartphone. The G4 traded a bit of raw power and cold industrial design in favor of organic yet practical execution. Then they peppered it with a few sprinkles of interesting features like laser auto focus, camera manual mode and support for camera RAW.

SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive

The iXpand Flash Drive is a very handy tool for iPhone or iPad users who are hampered with their device’s limited internal storage. It also provides a very quick and convenient way to transfer files from the iOS device to your PC. Not to mention, it looks and feels premium too.

LG Music Flow P7 (NP7550)

Overall, the LG Music Flow P7 is one of the more well put together portable speakers we’ve seen. The speaker’s uncluttered and minimalist design, coupled with its reassuring heft, gives the speaker a classy look that should complement your current living room setup or a nice fixture on your desk.

O+ Convertible

With a 500GB storage placed within its keyboard dock, that is the only thing special about the O+ Convertible. Its shortcomings are a bit hard to accept even for a media consumption, but it is still a capable Windows performer for those who wants a tablet and a portable PC.

HP f310 Car Camcorder

The HP f310 car camcorder should definitely be on your list if you’re looking for a dashboard camera that has a bit more features in it than the standard ones. Although it’s not as stealthy as we’d like it to be, it still looks good with its glossy finish and is easy to navigate thanks to its simple interface and decently-sized display.

O+ 360 HD

The O+ 360 HD is a decent Android that packs a good build, design, and camera. There are lots of other smartphones out there that feature those strengths as well so to make it standout O+ decided to equip this device with extra features like the 360 Touch Technology, Doodle Control and Air Shuffle.

Lenovo K3 Note

The K3 Note is a strong offering from Lenovo that packs a good set of hardware and software with an affordable price. It has a great display, very capable processor, LTE connectivity, and Android Lollipop out of the box.

Huawei P8

The Huawei P8 is a very compelling handset with a good mix of design and hardware improvements. Many others have also followed suit and went with dual-SIM, dual-LTE features in their flagship offerings, something Huawei originally introduced with the Mate 7 last year.

Cherry Mobile Flare XL

The Cherry Mobile Flare XL features a nice build with a bronze accent, slim profile and capable of great video quality for under Php5,000.

ASUS ZenBook UX305

The ZenBook UX305 features a beautiful and lightweight design, sharp and vibrant Full HD display, plenty of ports, decent to great performance and great battery life.

Starmobile KNIGHT Vision

The Knight Vision is a sub-Php10K device that has a solid form factor, responsive performance, digital TV function and a camera with OIS.

BlackBerry Leap

The BlackBerry Leap is a great improvement from the BlackBerry Z3 and Z10. It has a solid build and a design that would mostly appeal to young professionals. As BlackBerry is known for, it handles e-mails and calendars well and features one of the best on-screen keyboards as typing on it is a breeze. In addition, it has LTE connectivity, a decent camera, good battery life, and BB OS 10.3 with BB Blend.

Nikon D5500

For what it’s worth, the D5500 has all the right tools to become a solid contender in the entry-level DSRL department. It’s just that the new features that Nikon has added are just not compelling enough for existing D5300 users to upgrade.

Pyxis Fun Box (PS200)

The Pyxis Fun Box is quite the head-turner thanks to its straightforward design and chic colors that accented its predominantly gray-painted body. Sadly, it didn’t take long for us to notice the minor shortcomings that ruined what is otherwise a well-built wireless speaker.

Harman Kardon Soho Wireless Headphones

The Harman Kardon Soho Wireless is an elegant-looking on-ear headphone that comes with good audio quality and cool set of features like touch controls, wireless capability, and NFC. It’s portable as well as you can fold it and store it in the carrying case included in the package. The asking price isn’t cheap though at Php11,995.

Quick Review:

Acer Liquid Z520

The Acer Liquid Z520 is an affordable entry-level smartphone for those in a tight budget. At Php4,990 it’s not going to hurt your pocket that much.

OPPO R5

For the price of Php21,990, the OPPO R5 is a good buy if you want an unbelievably thin phone that comes with mid-tier to high-end specs.

Cherry Mobile Alpha Neon

The Alpha Neon feels like a premium Windows phone in terms of hardware. Although we had some minor problems with how its touchscreen perceived our touch input, the overall feel of the device didn’t feel cheap. Browsing experience was also snappy — its Windows 8.1 OS was responsive and we didn’t come across any major hiccups despite its modest internals.

Ekotek Ekotab Encore 2

Ekotab Encore 2 will pass as a tablet for those who don’t want to spend much. With a price tag of Php 2,999, it’s a cheap tablet with lots of limitations. If it only has a better screen, it could be a good buy. We would also give a plus point for Ekotek’s decent branding..
