March Gadget Reviews Roundup 2014

April is finally here folks, it’s the perfect month to hit the beach and enjoy your summer vacation. But before you do that let’s have a recap of all the gadgets we’ve reviewed last month. This includes the Starmobile Diamond X1 and the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2. Read our Gadget Reviews Roundup for the month of March below.

DECK by SOL REPUBLIC and Motorola

DECK 2

DECK by SOL REPUBLIC and Motorola is truly a feature-packed speaker, no doubt about that. Some of the features, like the increased Bluetooth range and speakerphone are nice to have, but I’ve proven that they don’t work as flawless and as important — at least for me. Having two of these at home just so you can use its daisy-chain function isn’t totally wise, in my honest opinion.

Cherry Mobile Sonic 2.0

Cherry Mobile Sonic 2.0

For the price of Php3,999, the Cherry Mobile Sonic 2.0 is a hard buy. I may have just been spoiled by other mobile displays, but I really had a hard time looking at the display during this review. The design felt uninspiring and the fast heating of the device caught my attention in a bad way. However, for the performance that it delivers along with the software and this price, it’s good. If those aren’t the only things that you’re looking for, then may we suggest saving up more.

JAYS t-JAYS One Earphones

jays one_4

The t-JAYS One delivers what is expected of it – great bass performance. However, since it has put most of its weight at the lower end of the spectrum the Highs may sometimes feel that it could use a little more punch. But if you’re a bass lover with a playlist dominated by Hip hop and Party music, the t-JAYS One certainly won’t disappoint.

Starmobile Diamond X1

diamond-x1

With its relatively affordable price, yet impressive hardware, this may indeed be the best locally-branded phablet. But the X1 is not for everyone. The display size may be too big for some; but for those who love 6-inchers and bigger yet are afraid of spending too much, this phablet is perfect. Well, almost perfect.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2

Chery Mobile Cosmos Z2 (Web)

By and large, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2 is a pretty respectable handset despite some of the shortcomings we pointed out in this review. It’s got most of the things you’d typically look for in a high-end smartphone, but it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to own one.

Sony Vaio Pro 13

vaio-pro13

There’s no denial that Vaio Pro is Sony’s best ultrabook yet with its sexy design, very light weight and great performance. However, that comes with a hefty price as well. With a price tag of Php79,999, it’s one of the most expensive ultrabooks in the market today.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

xperia-z1compact-09

The Z1 Compact has all the goodies packed in one small package. It certainly has its target market — those who yearn for a powerful handset in a not-so-huge form factor. However, this phone is not for everyone. Its size may be too small for some. We know a few people who had difficulty using the phone, probably because they were now used to 5 – 6 inch phablets.

Jays a-JAYS One

Jays a-JAYS One

For the price of Php1,799, I’d buy one mainly because I no longer want to stay with earphones that tangle like a puzzle, wear off easily through time and produce mediocre music. It’s not perfect as the cost can’t justify it for everyone and it has the stethoscope effect, but it’s just one of those days when I can correctly say “once you go black, you can never go back.”

Me Mobile Fuel 5

fuel5_1

The Me Mobile Fuel 5 is a really good offering coming from a new locally-based mobile brand. It’s got a good design, build, and display, and is capable of producing thumbs-up performance for its class. In addition, it has a good dose of internal storage at 8GB, whereas its competitors would normally have 4GB. On the downside, it is marred with a relatively old Jellybean OS and poor battery life. On the bright side, the Fuel 5 wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg at Php8,995.

ASUS FonePad Note 6

fonepad-note

Despite of the minor missteps we pointed out earlier, like the lack of built-in flash and its uninspiring design, we think that the ASUS FonePad Note FHD 6 is still a good buy at Php19,990. Its gorgeous 6-inch, 1080p display panel alone is worth more than half of the price of admission, not to mention it has other great features on the side like respectable battery life, a pair of front-mounted speakers and a Wacom Digitizer that should make it easier to forgive some of its shortcomings.

Acer Iconia W4

acer-w4

The Iconia W4 is the first low-cost Windows 8 tablet we’ve seen that’s positioned as an ideal netbook replacement. It’s portable yet powerful enough to do basic to moderate workload; comes with Windows 8.1 and MS Office Home/Student for free; bundled with a decent keyboard and case stand; and great battery life — all under a price tag that’s very competitive.

Me Mobile Phab7

Me Phab7

The Me Mobile Phab 7 is a nice tablet hybrid that comes with a solid body, responsive UI, and dual-SIM capabilities. Although light in specs, it can handle basic tasks and light gaming quite well. The downsides though are the short battery life, low-resolution camera, and its tendency to heat up when playing videos. On the bright side, it only costs, Php4,995.

February Gadget Reviews Roundup 2014

We now have the month of March ahead of us folks, and it’s time to take a look at the gadgets we’ve reviewed last month. This includes four smartphones, three tablets, a couple of wireless speakers, a tablet phone, and a watch phone. Here’s our Gadget Reviews Roundup for February 2014.

LG G Pro Lite Dual

lg g pro lite dual_8

The LG G Pro Lite Dual is a good mid-range offering that packs a big display with good build, a stylus, great dual-speakers, dual-SIM support, a very useful IR blaster for your TV, and a huge battery.

Huawei MediaPad 10 Link

huawei-mediapad-10-link

The Huawei MediaPad 10 Link with its aluminum back plate and superb speakers performed pretty well as a mid-range tablet. However, with a Php16,990 price tag, it will be a tough sell.

JBL Synchros S700 Headphone

jbl synchros s700

The JBL Synchros S700 is one of the best; if not the best closed-back headphones we’ve had the privilege of listening to. I was so impressed with the quality coming out of its 50mm drivers, not to mention it’s got a nice metal build and a sick design to go along with its outstanding sound output.

Samsung DA-F61 Portable Wireless Speaker

Samsung DA-F61 (web)

The Samsung DA-F61 Bluetooth Speaker is the total package. Nuff said. It’s got superb sound output to match its outstanding design and build. That said, it’s no longer a question of whether or not you should get it, but rather can you stomach shelling out ten grand for this speaker?

Braven 440 Bluetooth Speaker

Braven 440 Bluetooth Speaker

The Braven 440 is an amazing Bluetooth speaker, speakerphone and a portable charger that comes in an amazing lightweight yet solid package. We find the long pressing of buttons quite a hassle but that’s really just a minor complaint. Water resistance is a bonus, and the rest is just as good as it gets.

Cherry Mobile Rave 2.0

cm rave 2_1

The Cherry Mobile Rave 2.0 sports almost the same features as other Cherry Mobile smartphones in its class. The only difference is the inclusion of NFC which is not commonly found in mid-range devices. It’s a very nifty feature as we were able to pair our Sony QX10 lens camera on the Rave 2.0 with ease. On the plus side, Cherry Mobile is bundling this smartphone with an NFC-capable BS-1 wireless speakers. So if you’re looking for a capable smartphone with NFC under a Php9K budget, then the Cherry Mobile Rave 2.0 is the one to have.

Motorola Moto G

moto_g-front

The Moto G definitely lives up to its name. Being a Motorola smartphone plus a Google company (until Lenovo bought Motorola), it a very capable phone with superb screen and build.

Asus MeMO Pad 10

Asus MeMO Pad 10

For something priced at Php13,995, it’s really a good tablet especially if you compare it to other 10-inchers. Nothing spectacular, but it offers a decent mix of each and every element. However, look over smaller tablets and there might be more competition to consider. Asus has a very good portfolio of smaller tablets if you check them out and we’re guessing most of those can work just as well or even better. But then, if you need the extra inches in size, this will give you a good ride.

Cherry Mobile G1 Watch Phone

CM G1_Main Visual

The Cherry mobile G1 Watch Phone is a good secondary phone. It can be easily accessed for your casual personal calls or even texts. Being a wearable device, we applaud Cherry Mobile for introducing something different yet affordable enough to be considered by anyone who’s looking for a dual-SIM phone.

O+ Fab Elite

o plus fab elite

Despite of all the nice assets that the phone has to offer, not to mention the “free” Sennheiser headset and fancy Smart Cover, it’s still pretty tough to justify the Fab Elite’s Php18,990 price tag. Sure it’s relatively cheaper compared to the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, but its significantly pricier compared to other phablets in the market like the CM Omega HD 2X which has a smaller screen but better engine setup.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF701T

transformer pad tf701t_1

The TF701T is ASUS’ best Transformer Pad yet. It’s got a good set of specs partnered with a good build and design. In addition to being a full-blown tablet, it is also a very capable productivity partner thanks to its long battery life and keyboard dock. The USB 3.0 port is also a treat since we can easily connect any USB-compatible device like a mouse or a flash drive.

ASUS Fonepad 7 (ME175CG)

fonepad 7 dual

The ASUS Fonepad 7 (ME175CG) is a strong 7-inch tablet offering that packs a good display and build coupled with a very decent set of hardware and the latest Jellybean out of the box. Not to mention that it has full phone and text functionality, 3G connectivity, and can support two microSIM cards.

JBL Synchros S200i

Synchros S200 (WEB)

We are all praises for the JBL Synchros S200i. In our opinion, the killer combination of its durable yet lightweight build and superb sound output definitely puts this premium earphone among the top IEMs in the market.

January Gadget Reviews Roundup 2014

And just like that, the first month of the new year is officially over. But before we welcome February and gear up for Valentine’s Day, let’s take a look at the gadget reviews we’ve done last month. This includes the Google Nexus 5, three Cherry Mobile smartphones, an NVidia Shield, and a GoPro Hero+.

Google Nexus 5

Google Nexus 5

The Google Nexus 5 is a great phone which polishes upon Google’s last steps – the Nexus 4, and the past versions of Android. It has one of the most powerful sets of hardware and it’s also a step ahead of the Android crowd because of its up-to-date software. Battery life, the speakers and camera software could be better though, but that’s not to say it’s bad – it’s just something currently offered already in the competition.

Cherry Mobile Flare HD

cm flare hd

Despite the average battery life and so-so image quality produced by its 12MP rear camera, we have to admit that the Cherry Mobile Flare HD is indeed a keeper. The combination of reasonably cheap SRP coupled with a 720p display and decent engine configuration makes this handset a formidable candidate in the mid-range category.

Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 2 8?

miix2-philippines

If you want something more than just a simple tablet, more than just a repository of your photos and videos, then the Miix 2 can certainly offer that — full office productivity, heavy content creation, integration with other devices, and the flexibility of a mature and well-supported platform like Windows, then the Miix 2 is more than just a tablet, it’s potentially a laptop replacement.

Cherry Mobile Omega XL

cm-omega-xl-front

We could simply say that Cherry Mobile Omega XL is a great phablet for Php7,999. It’s worth every penny and it’s a good starting point before venturing to a high-end phablet, if you find the need to.

NVidia Shield

nvidia-shield-reviews

The NVidia Shield is a dedicated Android device for gaming, and can be polarizing — either you will love it a lot or find it excessive for your needs. It’s great for voracious and a great alternative for people who’ve been so used to the likes of the PSP or a Nintendo DS.

Huawei Ascend G610

Huawei Ascend G610

The Huawei Ascend G610 is a good phone, but certainly not with its price tag of Php8,000 with Smart or free with their All-In Plan 800. You can get a lot of better spec’d alternatives right now on the market instead of this, but if you’re truly after Huawei’s craftmanship, this one can still manage.

ASUS N550JV Laptop

asus n550jv

The Asus N550JV spoils you with a lot of high-end elements – from the beautiful 1080p display and the metal construction to the audio experience and the fast internals. It’s everything a person would want except for one thing – it’s not for the outgoing. The laptop is quite heavy and most may find the battery life to be disappointing, making it not ideal for those who are always on the move and like to travel.

GoPro Hero 3+

hero3plus

If you’re an outdoors kind of person, then the GoPro Hero 3+ is a must as a part your arsenal. It’s almost as essential as your Swiss army knife. Whether it’s surfing, sky diving, bungee jumping, biking and racing, the GoPro has got you covered. You can bring it to places and occasions you’d normally think your usual cameras would not survive.

Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear headphones

7

The Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear headphones got a perfect balance between classic and contemporary look which resulted into an eye-catching set of cans. The headphone has its fair share of design quirks (non-swiveling cups, headband can’t be folded, etc.), but we still think that the MOE will be more appealing to crowd.

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE

cm w900 lte

By and large, the Cherry Mobile W900 LTE is a decent smartphone with a 720p screen and a very snappy engine setup to go along with its 4G capability. Furthermore, that extra 4GB of internal storage can go a long way for some who stores a lot of files and install big apps on their device.

November Gadget Reviews Roundup

December is finally here and that means Christmas bonuses and 13th month payouts. So before you finalize that Christmas gadget wishlist, take a look at all the gadget reviews we’ve done last month.

Cherry Mobile Apollo

Cherry Mobile Apollo

At Php6,999, the Cherry Mobile Apollo is a very decent phone which offers a good balance between price and features. Although it’s marketed for its BSI camera, which was a bit overrated, we think that its best feature is its 4.5-inch HD display.

Nokia Lumia 1020 PureView

nokia05

There’s no doubt the Lumia 1020 can take claim as the best camera smartphone this year. It is a worthy upgrade to the previous flagship handsets by the Finnish company. Fans and users of the PureView 808 from 2 years ago will surely be glad to find a truly worthy upgrade.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7

memopadhd7_1

The MeMo Pad HD 7 is not aimed at heavy users and gamers but at casual users who just want a very capable tablet that can be used to browse social networks, take decent photos, read e-books on the go, watch movies, and play less graphic-intensive apps. With its price tag not exceeding Php9,000, the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 is a great offering for those who are in a budget for a 7-inch slate.

Cherry Mobile Flare 2X

CHERRY MOBILE FLARE 2X

If you’re truly stuck to a budget of Php4,499, then there really is no other choice. The Cherry Mobile Flare 2X gives a lot for the money and it’s really hard to complain on its shortcomings – the lack of power, bad viewing angles, the plastic build and the like – all of which are understandable compromises that had to be made. For the price, however, you’re getting a really well-balanced phone despite its flaws.

Acer Liquid S1

liquid s1_1

Acer really has a nice offering in the form of the Liquid S1. It has a large HD display, great build and design, good camera, dual-SIM capabilities, and very decent battery life too. It even comes with a really neat leatherette flip cover out of the box. If you’re looking for a large-screened smartphone that is under 6-inches, for a budget under Php20K, then the Acer Liquid S1 is a good phone to have.
