CES is the place/event where manufacturers get to showcase the latest and upcoming products before it reaches the market. It’s also the place to spot some of the most ingenious devices from companies you may not have even heard of. Case of the statement is the YotaPhone which comes from a Russian router company called Yota Devices and is probably the sickest handset to date.
What’s special about this handset is that it has two screens. However, unlike other dual-screened gizmos out there, the secondary screen of the YotaPhone is a Gorilla Glass 3-shielded 4.3-inch e-Ink display which is similar to the ones found on eReaders.
The concept behind having a secondary EPD (e-Paper Display) is for users to have an alternative viewing option instead of waking the phone up every so often and lighting up their handset’s colored and power-hungry displays just to check for alerts/notifications. With this, users can just take a glance at the back of the phone (which is where the grayscale display is situated) and go over their notifications and be done in a jiffy.

The YotaPhone’s main screen is an S-LCD 720p display which is the same size as the ePD at the back of the handset. Other notable features of this smartphone includes a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor (MSM8960), 2GB RAM and two sizeable on-board storage options (32GB or 64GB) which will come in handy as its non-expandable. Oh, it’s also equipped with a pair of snappers, 13MP on the back (which is oddly placed below the ePD) and 1.3MP mounted on the face of the handset.
Another thing that’s intriguing about the Android Jelly Bean handset is that there are no physical or capacitive buttons below the main screen for Home, Back and Menu. Instead, user will have to rely on gestures for phone navigation/operation.
Yota Device is looking to release their creation on their home turf which is due on the latter half of the year. Unfortunately, the possibility of a local release of the YotaPhone is slim at best, so we’ll just have to marvel at its awesomeness from a distance.
