Xiaomi trumps Samsung, now the leading phone-maker in China

Being at the number one spot since 2011, Samsung loses its title to Xiaomi as China’s leading smartphone-maker. Research firm Canalys reports that phone distribution during the second quarter of 2014 shows that Xiaomi tops at 15 million handsets while Samsung tails behind at only 13.2 million devices.

“Xiaomi has executed on its strategy to grow volume shipments. It has delivered compelling products at aggressive price points, focused chiefly on its locally relevant MIUI software features and services, backed by effectively targeted marketing,” says Shanghai-based Canalys Research Analyst Jingwen Wang.

Although the brand is a hit in other countries (Philippines included), it was more celebrated in their home country (mainland China) where 97% of Xiaomi’s shipments for Q2 were directed. Because of this they’re pretty confident to look into expanding to other markets such as Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey during the Q3-Q4 of 2014.

“Xiaomi does have the potential to be a disruptive force beyond China and international vendors should take note,” Singapore-based Analyst Jessica Kwee mentions.

xiaomivssamsung_canalys2Xiaomi is the top phone-manufacturer in China but Samsung still reigns supreme in worldwide shares. The Korean giant has a global share of 26% while Apple is at 12%, Huawei at 7%, Lenovo at 5%, and Xiaomi making its way to the global top 5 at also 5% last Q2 of 2014.

Xiaomi has been making a lot of noise recently with the local availability of its Mi 3 and the announcement of the LTE-capable Mi 4. It already got people’s attentions which are sure to watch out for more products from them in the future. If Samsung is planning to make a comeback, they better do it quick while Xiaomi is still gaining momentum.

Xiaomi confirms July 22 launch, teases “steel metal” build

Xiaomi sends out media invitations for its grand product launch to happen on July 22, 2014. A teaser posted earlier shows a big “4” while the invite talks about a “journey of a piece of steel,” hinting on a metal build on its upcoming flagship phone – most likely the Xiaomi Mi 4.

Xiaomi announces two variations of Redmi Note phablets

Xiaomi has officially announced Redmi’s successor and it seems like there are two variations of the previously-reported Redmi Note when it hits store shelves. Learn more of their specs and pricing after the break.

hongmi

The Xiaomi Redmi Note (or Hongmi 2 as they call it in China) was reported to come in two different models — with processor and RAM the only ones different. It’s still unknown what names to call them just to separate the two options apart so let’s just refer to them as the high-end and low-end versions at this time.

High-end Redmi Note specs:

5.5-inch IPS display @ 1280 x 720 pixels with OGS technology, 178-degree viewing angle
1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor
Mali450 GPU
2GB RAM
8GB storage (expandable)
13MP rear with LED flash and 5MP front cameras
Dual-SIM (TD-SCDMA/HSPA for SIM 1 slot and GSM/EDGE for SIM 2 slot)
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS
3200mAh battery
MIUI v5 on top of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Low-end Redmi Note specs:

5.5-inch IPS display @ 1280 x 720 pixels with OGS technology, 178-degree viewing angle
1.4GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor
Mali450 GPU
1GB RAM
8GB storage (expandable)
13MP rear with LED flash and 5MP front cameras
Dual-SIM (TD-SCDMA/HSPA for SIM 1 slot and GSM/EDGE for SIM 2 slot)
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS
3200mAh battery
MIUI v5 on top of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

hongmi 2

The 1.4GHz variant of the Redmi Note will be priced at 799 Chinese Yuans (approx. Php 5,700) while the 1.7GHz model will be at 999 Chinese Yuans (approx. Php7,200). For a phablet, they’re definitely competitively-priced.

Both will be available in different colors to choose from and would be on the Chinese market starting March 26, eventually making their way to other countries after that.
