The event will take place in San Francisco on September 30 with Joe Belfiore and Terry Myerson leading the pack. The affair will focus on enterprise users of the operating system of the upcoming Windows.

Windows 9 to be unveiled on September 30?

Report from The Verge tells that the next version of Microsoft’s operating system, Windows 9, is ready for preview by the end of September. What can we expect from this new release? Read on to find out.

Windows-8-1

On September 30, Microsoft might take off the curtains for Windows 9 or codename Threshold. The upcoming version of Microsoft’s OS will feature some cosmetic changes to the current Windows 8.1. We’re talking about the new mini Start Menu, thus integrating the Start Screen into the desktop. The Charms bar feature will be removed as well and expect a few minor UI changes throughout the system.

Cortana, Microsoft’s personal assistant and Siri-counterpart, has a possibility to be integrated too. Mind you, we should all treat this with a grain of salt since we haven’t heard anything official or even a tease from Microsoft. There are rumors too that Windows RT and Windows Phone is merging. We’ll just have to wait until next month to see how the future of Windows is going to be.

Windows’ hyperlapse algorithm produces super smooth GoPro footage

Windows has developed a new algorithm that can smoothen up your shaky GoPro videos and make it look like you’re hovering over places while wearing a steady cam.

The technique used is similar to the Photosynth app where it stitches the images you take to form one grand image. In this case it speeds up the video and in the process, breaks each frame down into still images and matches certain parts of the said images needed to produce one smooth clip. It’s basically a fast-forwarded clip of photos that originated from a video.

Below is Windows’ sample between a raw sped up footage and the one applied with the algorithm.

The video still isn’t 100% flawless since traces of the stitching can still be seen (especially on the latter part of the footage), but the result is still very impressive considering it’s still in beta. With the rise of action cameras and even Google Glass, the numbers of first-person videos have been rising. Seeing videos with this hyperlapse technique just makes it more fun and enjoyable to watch. We’re even more excited to see what the final product will be like when it becomes official.

People interested in this technology could look forward to seeing it as a Windows app in the near future, as mentioned by the company.

Winamp waves farewell after 15 years

Back to the days when we dislike our stock media players on our PCs, Winamp is our go-to application for a better experience. Sad news, it is no longer staying with us.

Winamp was popular during the 90s and early 2000s. This was during the good old days of Win98 and XP where things are simple and straight forward. It even had a Mac and Android version to keep up with the times.

For an undisclosed reason, Winamp will be having its last download available on December 20, 2013. With that, all fans and users of the media player can have the latest build for remembrance. Of course, that doesn’t prevent you from downloading a copy now and saving it for future use or you’ll probably see copies saved somewhere else.

It’s been a good 15 years of service Winamp.

Microsoft to buy Nokia for $7.2 billion

Some might have seen it coming, some might have not. For 2 and a half years, Microsoft and Nokia had a partnership for pushing forward Windows Phone, and now it seems like that is coming to an end – the Redmond company finally buying Nokia for $7.2 billion.

MS NOKIA

“We will continue to build the mobile phones you’ve come to love, while investing in the future – new phones and services that combine the best of Microsoft and the best of Nokia.”

What MS is purchasing is most of the company – including the device division of course. What’s left of Nokia are its network infrastructure (NSN), its HERE services and Advanced Technologies.

The transaction will close early on next year, 2014. With all of that said, we know a few things. We won’t ever see a Nokia running Android, Microsoft’s hardware including the Surface might utilize Nokia’s hardware, and Nokia CEO Stephen Elop might replace Ballmer after all.

Editor’s Note: In 2012, we predicted that Microsoft will eventually buy Nokia for under $30 billion. It took 18 months for the prediction to come true but we were off by as much as $23 billion.
