How To Manage The Ads You See On Facebook

If you use Facebook daily then you already know that it is filled with ads which is the main source of revenue for the popular social media site. Nobody likes ads taking up space in their news feed, and the sad part is we can’t totally get rid of them. However, we could at least tweak it and just see the ads we think are relevant and useful. Here’s how to do it.

First, you need to login to your Facebook account. Next, go to Ad Preferences by clicking this link. The page will then show you the kind of ads that Facebook thinks you want to see. This ranges from Business and Industry, Fitness and Wellness, News and Entertainment, Technology, and Travel.

From here, click a category and it will show a list of brands advertising on Facebook. If you click on the brand Facebook will give you information why this kind of ad is showing on your feed.

To remove the ad, just hover your mouse towards the right side of the brand’s name and click on ‘X’. Facebook will then show you a notification saying that when you remove a preference, they will no longer show you ads based on it. However, you may still see similar ads based on your other preferences.

To remove other ads, just repeat the process. You may also add a preference if you wish. It’s a bit cumbersome though as you have to do it one by one as some categories can reach up to more than a hundred brands.

Is the Philippines facing another internet bubble?

This month, two of the long-time online services have closed down in the country along with other similar offices in the region. One is the daily deals site turned online retail store, Ensogo, while the other is a jobs site, JobsDB. Of the two, JobsDB Philippines has been in operation the longest – about 17 years since they opened in the country. It’s also one of only two major players in its category so we can’t help but be puzzled by this development.

JobsDB’s official Facebook Page has since posted an announcement for people to hop on erstwhile rival, JobStreet, even calling it “the No. 1 Job Site in the Philippines”. Perhaps the market has shrunk and could no longer accommodate two big job search portals.

Ensogo’s demise is much less surprising, considering that the excitement for daily deals and group buying has died down for quite some time now. Besides, there were many other similar sites that closed down years ago. It was only a matter of time before the numbers are narrowed down even further. The last big one was Groupon/Beeconomic back in September 2015. This leaves old-timers like CashCashPinoy and MetroDeal in the space, although the owner of the latter has also made a smart exit by selling to Japanese investor, Transcosmos.

In the classifieds market, car classified ads site Tsikot have also been recently sold to Now Web Solutions. Though the amount is undisclosed, we don’t think it’s anywhere near the Php100 million offer MIH made to them back in 2011.

The biggest player in the classifieds ad space was Sulit. Founded in 2006 by freelance developer, RJ David, the two-man start-up was snapped up by MIH in 2009. Singapore Press Holding came in with AyosDito to challenge Sulit’s monopoly in the Philippines. Sulit was eventually merged with OLX in 2014 which is also owned by Naspers (parent company of MIH). Later that year, AyosDito would close down and direct all traffic to OLX.

Recent players like Lazada and Zalora, both owned by German-based Rocket Internet, are taking much of the attention and market share in the local e-commerce space. Lazada could be considered the biggest online store in the country, with over 10,000 transactions a month , since they opened up shop 4 years ago. However, both online stores aren’t profitable with a combined loss of about $235 million, according to its 2014 filing from all their combined market.

There are also newer entrants like social news site Rappler and regional news network Coconuts Media (Coconuts Manila in the Philippines) as well as well-funded start-ups like job-matching engine Kalibbr, price comparison site PricePrice.com, PayrollHero, ZipMatch and PawnHero.

These new batch of tech start-ups have yet to be truly tested if they can grow to a significant size, scale, and eventually become really profitable. Some have shown promise while the rest, well, we have yet to see.

Facebook has just voted its first Philippine President

Around this time, the partial unofficial results of the tabulation of votes coming in from the COMELEC Transparency Server shows Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is going to be the new President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Duterte is getting around 37% of the total running votes, 4% higher than his most recent ratings (33%) in the last survey.

As of 9:00PM, May 9, 2016:

Mayor Duterte’s name came from nowhere and he was a last-minute entry into the presidential race. Way before his candidacy, VP Binay was leading the early polls with Sen. Grace Poe taking over the spot in the first couple of months leading into the campaign period.

Duterte had single-digit ratings (~5%) but slowly crept to the top with 33% rating until the last surveys. From being a local mayor to becoming a President, Duterte takes the record for the biggest jump in elected position in recent history, trumping Binay’s record from being Makati Mayor to Vice President in the 2010 elections (not counting Cory’s ascension to the presidential seat).

What is most interesting in the 2016 Presidential Elections is the role of social media in shaping the minds and ballots of the electorate.

Duterte’s position was against the incumbent party (LP) with a huge machinery, billions of pesos in campaign funds, endorsement of the Pres. Aquino and many big names in civil society. This is evidenced by the 9.7 million votes running-mate Leni Robredo has gotten as of this time.

From the get-go, LP’s Mar Roxas had the most enviable position in the race but unlike Binay or Grace, he never topped any credible surveys during the entire campaign period.

Looking at the campaign spendings along, Roxas, Binay and Poe each spent a billion pesos between Janaury 2015 to Janaury 2016. The numbers would have further balooned by May 7, 2016 which is the last day of election campaigns.

The mayor’s only promise is “radical change” and his primary tool is Facebook. Based on Facebook data reported by ABS-CBN’s Social Media Center, Duterte got the biggest noise in Facebook with over 80 million interactions since November of 2015 coming from over 10 million unique FB users.

Duterte has more than 2.9 million fans on his Facebook Page with Grace Poe edging him at close to 3.1 million and Sen. Mirriam Santiago a far 3.6 million. Binay has 2.7 million while Roxas is behind at only 1.44 million.

All fan pages are very active and highly engaged. Where Duterte took the lead is with the thousands of volunteers spreading news (legit or otherwise) and creating engaging content about him and Davao city. With over 45 million Filipino Facebook users, the social media platform has become the biggest political stage and Duterte was killing it.

Like it or not, Duterte is going to be the next President and Facebook made a huge contribution.
