The CAT B15 is one tough phone, has WFT, and runs Android

Here’s something you don’t see everyday: Heavy machinery expert Caterpillar makes the CAT B15 — an Android smartphone and wraps it up with tough protection. It boasts falling from high drops without any damage, is waterproof, and has wet finger tracking.

CAT B15 specs:
4-inch WVGA capacitive display @ 800 x 480 screen resolution
Gorilla Glass display
1GHz dual-core processor

4GB storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD)
5MP rear, VGA front cameras
GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

Android Jelly Bean

On paper, it looks just like another feature phone with its “okay” specs. But since this is Caterpillar we’re talking about, they had to live up to their name of tough machinery somehow, right? That’s why they decided to target this smartphone to active people and made it really rugged without sacrificing functionality.

The CAT B15 is IP67-certified making it waterproof for up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, and impervious to dust. It has also undergone military standard 810G which, if you’re unfamiliar, is a series of tests done to the device to try out how its protective material would hold up against stress during its operational lifetime.

The dual-SIM CAT B15 has been made to withstand shock and drop up to 1.8 meters, high temperature, and category 4 vibration. Lastly, it has WFT or wet finger tracking so users can still use it even underwater or out in the rain.

In addition, the CAT B14 runs fully on Jelly Bean so you could download and enjoy all the Android goodness from Google Play. Are you or do you know anyone who’s clumsy enough to need this kind of phone?

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is official

If the already waterproof Samsung Galaxy S5 is not enough for you, then the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Active will answer your needs.

The more robust version of Samsung’s flagship Android smartphone is the successor to last year’s Galaxy S4 Active. Early rumors state that an “Active” version of the Galaxy S5 might not come because the popular smartphone is already IP67 certified (dust and water resistant).

Since the ‘regular’ version is already IP67 certified, Samsung raised the bar even further. The Galaxy S5 Active is also MIL-STD-810G certified. Aside from the usual dust and water resistance, it is also salt, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock resistant. Might be too much for the average consumer but this phone is perfect for construction and other related profession.

Another physical difference from the Galaxy S5 is the inclusion of a “convenience key” on the side that starts the Active Zone app. Also, the capacitive + home button combo is replaced with hardware buttons. It’s not bulky either at 8.9mm. Who needs a thick case now?

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active specifications:
5.1″ Super AMOLED display (1080 x 1920 pixels), 432 ppi
2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801
Adreno 330
2GB of RAM
16GB internal memory, expandable via microSD up to 128GB
16-megapixel primary camera, 2160p@30fps
2-megapixel front camera, 1080p@30fps
LTE Cat4
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band
Bluetooth v4.0 w/ A2DP
GPS w/ A-GPS support and GLONASS
NFC
Li-Ion 2800 mAh
Android 4.4.2 “KitKat” w/ TouchWiz
145.3 x 73.4 x 8.9 mm (dimensions)
170.1g (weight)

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is only available for now through AT&T in North America for $199.99 with a two-year contract or a staggering $714.99 w/o contract. No word on international availability.

Micromax Splash, midrange IP67-certified smartphone?

Micromax, an Indian consumer electronics company, has been rumored to be working on Splash — a water- and dust-proof mid-range smartphone.

According to the tweet of the source, Splash will be the company’s first IP67-certified smartphone. It can go up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Other than that, nothing else has been revealed; but the photo shows a 5.0-megapixel rear camera with a single flash beside it.

Inspecting the photo closely, we could see blue-colored notification bar icons suggesting an Android Jelly Bean OS (since KitKat implements a white hue). The build looks very much like it belongs in a mid-range category with its smooth curves all around, and it’s a bit thick looking from the side.

Pricing and availability are still unknown as of the moment, but it might not take long since it has already passed the IP67 certification. If this pushes through, we will be seeing smartphones with Sony-like protection against external elements at a more affordable price point.
