Google Everywhere is both Great and Scary

During Google I/O 2014, there were two protesters who interrupted the keynote, one saying that Google builds robots that kill. After that and certainly after all the news with the NSA, it got me thinking – having a few companies control your data may be a little scary.

Google Earth

Let’s have a quick run through on Google products and services that we use, might use and will use in the future to put things into perspective:

  • Your phone (Android)
  • Your tablet (Android)
  • Your smartwatch (Android Wear)
  • Your television (Android TV, Chromecast)
  • Your car (Android Auto, self-driving cars)
  • Your internet experience (Search, Chrome and other account related services)
  • Your cloud storage (Drive)
  • Your eyewear (Glass)
  • Your navigation (Maps, Waze)
  • Your social media (Plus)
  • Your laptop (Chrome OS, Chromebook)
  • Your media streaming (YouTube, Play)
  • Your e-mail (Gmail)
  • Your home automation & control (Nest, Dropcam)
  • Your internet (Fiber; selected locations only)

Now, read through it another time if it still doesn’t get to you – I’m sure you will probably find it either convenient, scary or both. In addition to everything listed above, let’s not forget Google also has advertising as a major backbone supporting them. They also have lots of top secret things going on over at Google X, having acquired companies such as DeepMind Technologies for artificial intelligence and Boston Dynamics for robots.

This is all not to say that something evil is up however; Apple, Microsoft and a lot of tech companies are trying to do this too. As a matter of fact, lots of things done by Google seem very progressive as they’re trying to get everyone on the internet with projects such as Project Loon (all goes back to their advertising).

You’ve probably seen how everything scales up; Android started in phones and now they’re in cars. With Google’s recent acquisition of Nest & Dropcam, it’s inevitable that we’ll be seeing smarthomes in the future too. Not long after that, we may get smartcities if Google partners up with governments. If you want to know how that looks like, you should see Watch Dogs.

The convenience here for me, and possibly for everyone else, is basically sync. If I get into an Android phone, I might as well get an Android tablet, a Chromebook and an Android car, right? Well, not yet maybe, but I’m sure they all work well together; there are still some pros and cons. Same with the iPhone, the iPad, CarPlay, Macs and etc. You can have an Xbox, but that doesn’t mean you should get a Windows Phone – but if you did, the Microsoft experience will be better on your end.

With mostly all products getting better through time, so does the entire ecosystem, but let’s say, maybe in the future or some alternate universe, I decided to get an Android Wear Rolex, an Android Auto Audi, Google Glass 8 and a mansion run by Android Home. Then, the next year, I decided I don’t like my Android phone anymore – I think I want an iPhone this time since it’s fireproof and it has an iris scanner. Can I simply make the switch? I don’t think so. Maybe if Google, Apple & Microsoft were all friends to each other, I may switch, but it seems like they’re all bent on building their ecosystems independently without that much openness to each other right now.

But then again, the situation above is IF I had a majority of my things run by Google. How do we avoid this? For consumer problems, the answer I always see is competition, competition and competition – but not all governments are doing their job, aren’t they? Lots of buyouts are happening, and they’re leading into either monopolies or oligopolies.

Here’s a conspiracy theory – what if governments are allowing this because they’re getting something from it? NSA grabbing data? A Skynet Terminator army? Corrupt government officials getting kickbacks? Oh well. Telco buys this, social network buys that; maybe I’m paranoid, maybe I’m not.

Watch Dogs promo: You’d wish this happens in real life

What if you could control the things in your surroundings with just an app? What if, just by a press of a button, you can turn on lights, change traffic lights, and unlock any sports car that you see on the street? This is what these people did to promote Ubisoft’s hotly-anticipated video game Watch Dogs.

watch dogs

The team sets up a smartphone repair shop complete with cameras to document the whole thing. The idea is to wait for people to get their faulty handsets repaired. The repair guy then takes a look at it, fixes it, and gives it back to the owner but with a special extra – an app that can control the surroundings!

The repair guy demonstrates the capabilities of this new app which impresses and at the same time confuses the owners. All is fun until what they’re doing causes chaos in the city. You just have to watch the video to appreciate it so hit Play below.

Although the whole thing is scripted (yes, even the “surprised victims” are in on it too), they clearly showed what to expect once the video game hits store shelves on May 27, 2014. This Amazing Street Hack video got us nerdy gamers all excited and wished an app like this existed in real life. Don’t you?

9 Upcoming Games We Keep Our Eyes on

There are a lot of games with tons of hype behind them, and they are all mostly slated for a release sometime soon. Some games have lots of funding, some are really well thought and some carry the weight of living up to their franchise’s name. Check out our list for the upcoming games we’re looking forward to down below.

GAMES

The Evil Within

A few people might say great survival horror games are now hard to find. Shinji Mikami, titled the father of survival horror, is back to direct this one. He was the mind behind the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4 and Dino Crisis, and so far, everything looks extremely thrilling. The feeling after seeing the trailer below is indescribable, and if that’s enough, we are also linking the gameplay video here.

Announced Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

Release: August 2014

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

As of writing, we only have limited information on the next Call of Duty. While Ghosts didn’t seem enough for us to buy into it, this looks more promising. Sure, it’s got a little futuristic vibe like other new first-person shooters, but that’s actually a good thing. Check out the reveal trailer to get an idea on what we are talking about:

Announced Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

Release: November 2014

Destiny

Destiny is one of those really ambitious games as it enters the genre of MMO-RPG first-person shooting with an open world that is futuristic. That’s quite a lot to swallow, but it’s happening.

Announced Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

Release: September 2014

Watch Dogs

Not just another open world game, Watch Dogs puts you in the position of someone who can control almost all the electronics in the city with just his smartphone. That in itself opens a lot of doors for gameplay possibilities, and since it has already been hyped up for too long, it’s releasing this month!

Announced Platforms: PC, Wii U, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

Release: May 2014

The Next Pokemon

Pokemon X and Y became a huge success, so we’re really excited for the next Pokemon game. While Pokemon Z / X2, Y2 is still in the works, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire has already been announced for the 3DS and it’s a remake for the third-generation. We don’t know a lot about it yet, but here’s the reveal:

Platforms: Nintendo 3DS

Release: November 2014

Heroes of the Storm & StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void

While Diablo III’s Reaper of Souls was just outed out recently and HearthStone is still hot on the plate, we all know Blizzard is cooking up Heroes of the Storm and the next expansion for StarCraft 2. We don’t know a lot about the next StarCraft 2 except that it’s going to be the conclusion of the trilogy plus a few more details, but Heroes of the Storm is what seems to be Blizzard’s main thing right now.

SC2 LEGACY OF THE VOID

Heroes of the Storm, previously known as Blizzard Allstars, combines all of Blizzard’s heroes from Diablo, Warcraft and StarCraft into one game where all of them can fight. It’s kind of a geek’s dream, unless they’ve already grown loyal to LoL or DoTA 2, but nonetheless, we’re all eyes and ears on Blizzard for this. Check out the cinematic below and here for the gameplay.

Announced Platforms: PC, OS X

Release: TBA

More of The Walking Dead

Drama, zombies and making choices – that’s what The Walking Dead games are all about, and it’s really a good formula that has kept us playing throughout several episodes. There are a lot more on the way, and we’re really excited to see what the Telltale games have in store for us.

The Walking Dead

Announced Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, OS X, iOS, PlayStation Vita, Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Release: 3 episodes due 2014

The Sims 4

Just like every follow up to every Sims game, Sims 4 is ready to offer you tons of new features and customization options – from the sim itself to the world you’re in. It’s quite a long video down below, but it contains almost everything you need to know about the upcoming game.

Announced Platforms: PC, OS X

Release: Q3/Q4

That’s it for our list, and we hope you share in the hype with us. If you’re waiting for other games, feel free to leave the titles in the comment section down below and let us know what you think!
