Uber expands coverage to the east — Cainta and Antipolo included

Starting today, May 2, 2016, Uber operations will now bring you to the east side of Metro Manila including Cainta and select areas of Taytay, Antipolo, and San Mateo.

It’s important to note that the service only covers going to the aforementioned locations and not from them — so if you live in Cainta, for example, you can only get a ride from Uber going home but not going to Manila.

When you’re headed towards the east, there will be an automatic East Surcharge worth Php60 which is meant “to ensure the economic sustainability of expanding Uber Manila’s coverage area.”

Curious if your place is within the expanded coverage area? You can enter your destination  on the Uber app before hitting the Request button. The app should let you know if the location is outside of Uber’s coverage.

New Taxi fare vs Uber, GrabCar rates: Which is cheaper?

As affirmed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the fare for the regular and airport taxis plying the streets of Metro Manila now starts at Php 30 with adjusted distance and waiting time charges. With a tight game against TNC companies or Grab and Uber, let’s have a look on how the fares of respective modes of transportation compete with each other.

RatesTaxiAirport TaxiGrabCarUberX
Flag Down / BasePhp 30Php 60Php 30Php 40
Succeeding DistancePhp 3.50 (per 500m)Php 4 (per 500m)Php 12 (per KM)Php 5.70 (per KM)
TimePhp 3.50 (per 90s waiting)Php 4 (per 90s waiting)No chargePhp 2 (per minute)

As you can see from the table above, the base fare regular taxis, GrabCar, and UberX is pretty close to each other. What differs are their charges for distance and time traveled.

For distance, the reasonable charge is from Uber with only Php 5.70/km while everyday taxis place second at Php 7/km (Php3.50 per 500m) while GrabCar requires Php12/km. Uber may be the cheapest for distance but they charge you also Php2/minute of your travel while taxi meters apply the waiting charges of Php3.50 every 90s only when it’s in a complete stop. GrabCar, on the other hand, doesn’t have additional charges.

So, which is cheaper?

It varies per situation. In theory, regular taxis are still the cheapest as long they don’t ask for extra charges a fixed deal for the trip. Uber is ideal when traffic is good while GrabCar is your option if you want peace of mind since it’s a fixed rate and getting stuck in traffic is not a problem. Keep in mind that Uber implements Surge pricing when traffic is really bad in the area while GrabCar has higher fees during rush hours.

The new Taxi rates will be in effect tomorrow, Saturday, March 19th.

Uber launches carpooling service UberCOMMUTE in China

Uber, in China, launches a new service called UberCOMMUTE that aims to make commuting easier and more efficient via sharing a ride.

ubercommute

Aiming to help reduce costs for everyone and at the same time cut traffic congestion, the service lets drivers sign in to the app and key in their destination which will then be matched by Uber to participating riders who share the same route. The driver can already see how much he would be earning before he decides to accept the request and pick them up on the way.

Riders will split the payment which could cut the costs in half for each passenger, so that’s a good thing. This also frees up space on the street since people would now be sharing a ride instead of them having one vehicle each.

Currently, only China has the service but the company will “adapt uberCOMMUTE for other cities around the world”. This means there is a high chance that it will make its way here in the Philippines.
