Devant 55WIZ830 55-inch LED TV unboxed, in the flesh

Devant sent us another huge TV set last week. This is the second unit they’ve delivered for review (the first one we got to keep) and this time, it’s the biggest in their line-up — a 55-inch 3D LED TV.

We’ve actually seen this model in store shelves since last month and I really liked the design and slim profile of this one. The polished silver and crystal design coupled with a very thin bezel gives it that elegant and sexy look.

We tried to unbox the whole set over the week-end and the thing is actually pretty heavy (weighs 34kg). Assembly was quick and easy — took me less than 10 minutes and involved a total of 6 screws.

The back of the display panel looks very bare but the essential ports are all there — 3 HDMI ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, antenna, VGA, SPDIF, component and headphone jack. The USB port supports files such as JPEG, MP3 and MKV for direct playback.

One of the first things I actually noticed during unboxing is the TV stand (it actually reminded me of the stand design used by Samsung before in their Series 7 line). It feels a bit wobbly though so you have to screw them in really tight.

The set comes with this simple remote which is also used when switching the Smart TV function for access to YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and a basic browser.

There’s a WiFi dongle included in the package which you can plug at the back on one of the USB ports.

For the 3D feature, Devant included 2 active 3D glasses. The TV supports 2D to 3D conversion but it’s not as refined and blurry-free compared to watching native 3D content.

Here are the specs for this unit.

Devant 55WIZ830 3D LED TV specs:
55″ Edge LED @ full HD 1080p
3D
2D to 3D Conversion
Smart Functions
Perfectly Clear Panel
FULL HD 1920 X 1080 Pixels
3,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
Supports HDMI x 3
Supports USB Device: JPEG, MP3, MKV
Digital TV with built-in ISDB-T receiver
WiFi and LAN

If I remember correctly, this specific model retails for about Php119,950 (with a lot of freebies in the package) but some online stores (esp. the Multiply stores) sell them for under Php85,000.

TV World: 3D is out, Curved OLED is in!

In the last two CES, we’ve seen a deluge of 3D Smart TVs being showed off by manufacturers left and right. This year though, it looks like curve OLED TVs are the new thing. Both Samsung and LG are showcasing their very first curved display TV sets.

Last year, LG showed off a 55-inch OLED TV, making it the first one to release the $10k OLED TV in the market. This year, LG is showing a demo of the same OLED TVs but are now shaped in a curved way.

This gives a better impression of depth and perspective to the viewer and also addresses the issue on viewing angle.

In the same exhibition, Samsung also showed off their own curve OLED TVs. And while these are just prototypes at the moment, the idea of better TV viewing has left the 3D space (at least with respect to these two brands).

We still can’t appreciate what a curved TV adds to the viewing experience but it sure does make for a nice center-piece in the living room.

Corning launches Gorilla Glass 3

Corning, the company responsible for protecting the screens of the majority of smartphones and tablets out there, has just launched the latest version of their damage-resistant cover glass – the Gorilla Glass 3.

GG3_Evolved_Release

According to Corning, the Gorilla Glass 3 uses a completely new glass composition with durability enhancements developed at the atomic structural level of the glass. In addition, it uses the new Native Damage Resistance technology which provides “enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs.” Simply put, Gorilla Glass 3 is better and tougher than Gorilla Glass 2.

Devices equipped with Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR are expected to be unveiled in mid-2013. Hit the source link below and watch this latest glass technology take a hit from a 175g steel ball.

Samsung unveils a duo of Series 7 monitors

Just before we flipped our calendars to 2013, Samsung has announced two Series 7 display panels which they plan to showcase in the upcoming Consumer Electronic Show this month in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two monitors go by the name (or model number) SC770 and SC750 with the former measuring at 24-inch diagonally while the other is 27-inch. Both of these PLS-type panels will boast a Full HD resolution which will be displayed in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Each is said to have a 5ms (GTG) response time and will have a 5000:1 Contrast Ratio.

SC750

Besides the size, there are other contrasting features that these two monitors have such as the two built-in 3W speaker and USB port on the SC770 and the slightly brighter display (300 cd/m2 vs 250 cd/m2) of the SC750. But the main difference between the SC750 and SC770 is that the latter sports a touchscreen display which is geared for Windows 8 users. The SC750, on the other hand, features a slim and ergonomic design which allows the user to tilt it up to 90° for a more comfortable view.

These two new monitors are set to hit the shelves on the first quarter of this year but it’s still not sure how much it’ll cost when it does come out.

SC770

Accompanying these two monitors in the Samsung booth in the upcoming CES is the hand calibrated Series 9 display panel (S27B970) which made its debut back in the third quarter of last year. This 27-inch monitor is equipped with a slew of ports which includes a pair of USB, DVI and HDMI and has MHL support. The Samsung Series 9 S27B970, with all of its glamour, will cost you a bank-breaking USD1,200. It’s not cheap, but if you’re in search of a more than decent monitor for your photography needs, this one may just fit the bill.
