Fun Finds: 40″ Toshiba PU200 Power TV for just Php21k

Saw this 40-inch Toshiba LED TV last month while checking out some electronics stores in the malls (I think this was in Robinson’s Malate). They were selling it for just Php21,390 (after cash discount) so I picked up one and used it in the condo.

At that size, I though the Php21k was already a good deal, considering this is a Toshiba (the store was the Robinson’s Appliance Store in Robinson’s Malate).

I actually have an ageing 40-inch Toshiba TV at home and already gave it away to friends earlier this year (among other stuff). It lasted me for many years so I thought it was only fitting I’d get another Toshiba in its stead. I remember buying the old unit for about Php70k in Ansons about three years ago so one can only be amazed how affordable LED TVs are nowadays.

A lot of people were asking where I got this (after posting it on Instagram) and forgot to share the details so here you go. Just right on the budget but large enough for a studio unit. The TV now sits in our Team Tech Squad studio and will be used as backdrop for season 2.

Cignal hits Half a Million Subscribers

Satelite TV provider, Cignal, has just reached a total subscriber base of 500,000 nationwide. The subscription-based Direct-To-Home (DTH) TV provider has been around since 2009.

Asus MB168B+ Portable USB Monitor

We spotted this monitor at the Asus booth in Computex last week and thought it was very interesting. It’s a portable USB Monitor that you can hook up to any device for bigger display.

This could be useful if you carry a laptop and use this monitor as an external display. The panel is 15.6 inches across with full HD 1080p resolution, weighs 800 grams and is only 8mm thin.

Data and power directly comes from the USB 3.0 cable so there’s no extra cable needed. The matte display has a contrast ratio of 600:1 with maximum brightness of 250cd/sqm. It also detects orientation and can auto-rotate.

The monitor also comes with nice multi-purpose screen that serves as a carrying case and as a stand. Not sure how much this would cost or if Asus will ever bring it here.

Asus PQ321 31.5-inch and 39-inch 4K monitors

We went looking for the 4K monitors that was announced by Asus just before COmputex and were surprised to see that there were actually two (2) models on the show floor — a 31.5-inch which was announced and another 39-inch model.

About a month ago, we recorded an episode for Team Tech Squad and I predicted that Asus should build a 32-inch monitor. I was pleased that the prediction came true.

This 39-inch monitor has a 3840×2160 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 113 (typical pixel density of full HD TVs are between 40 to 50ppi only).

This monitor uses HDMI or Display Port for connection to a PC.

The 31.5-inch monitor also has 3840×2160 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 140ppi. This one also uses 2 HDMI ports and a Display Port. The panel uses an IGZO panel technology for better clarify and brightness yet still energy-efficient.

Asus is said to be putting the retail price of the 31.5-inch model at $4,000 in the US market.

Corning introduces Lotus XT Glass

Corning has announced the commercial launch of their latest glass technology for high-performance displays, the Lotus XT.

The Lotus XT is not to be confused as a successor to the Gorilla Glass which is well-known for its damage-resistance characteristics. The Lotus XT Glass is a different technology altogether which is designed to improve manufacturing process.

To achieve energy-efficient, immersive display devices with high resolution, fast response times, and bright picture quality, panel makers need to process the glass at higher temperatures. This is where the unique properties of the Lotus XT Glass comes in.

“Lotus XT Glass is designed to have improved thermal and dimensional stability over higher temperatures, generating higher yields for our customers (panel makers).” said John P. Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning High Performance Displays.

Simply put, the Lotus XT Glass technology allows hotter manufacturing processes which help in producing faster, thinner, lighter, brighter, and higher resolution displays.
