Corning launches Gorilla Glass NBT for laptops

Corning extends its glass technology to the PC market with the announcement of the Gorilla Glass NBT – the company’s latest cover glass designed to help protect touch-enabled notebook displays from scratches and other forms of damage that come from everyday handling and use.

According to Corning, the Gorilla Glass NBT provides “enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs to help protect notebook displays from breakage that can occur with lower-performing soda-lime glass.”

“We are confident that Corning Gorilla Glass NBT will outperform legacy soda-lime glass, delivering eight to 10 times more scratch resistance. In fact, for just 1 to 2 percent of a notebook’s retail price, consumers can now get the best cover glass solution: a Gorilla solution. Simply put, we believe that if you don’t have Gorilla on your device, it’s not as good.” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials.

Meanwhile, Dell has also announced that it will be using the Gorilla Glass NBT on its newest products. “We’re integrating Corning Gorilla Glass NBT into our new client devices launching this fall, further enhancing our industry leading product reliability and durability.” said Sam Burd, vice president, PC Product Group, Dell.

Corning Gorilla Glass NBT is currently available and is expected to be featured on several notebook product models by leading global brands later this year.

TCL to launch a 50-inch 4K TV, priced under $1,000

TCL, China’s leading TV manufacturer, is about to change the way we perceive 4K TVs (as very expensive piece of display technology) as they unveil the 7E51040 Ultra-HD; a 50-inch 4K TV which will only set you back USD999 a pop.

Ultra-HD (UHD) TVs or commonly known as 4K TVs are great. I mean who wouldn’t want a pixel-packed TV inside their living room. However, its premium price tag is well above the average consumer’s budget, prohibiting such devices to gain popularity in the market.

To give you a better idea on how inexpensive TCL’s new brainchild is, we’ve compiled some of the 4K TVs/monitors we’ve covered in the past with its respective SRP:

ASUS PQ321 (31.5-inch) – $3,999
Toshiba L9300 series (58-inch) – $4,999
Sharp PN-K321 (32-inch) – $5,500
LG 84LM960V (84-inch) – $19,999
Samsung UHD TV 85S9 (85-inch) – $39,999

As you can see, the TCL 7E51040’s price is well-below than any of the candidates above, placing it in a better position to slug it out with the top names in the business.

Of course, having a significant price drop will almost ultimately mean that there were sacrifices made; be it in the design or configuration. And while we can’t say much about its design because we haven’t had the chance to see the TV yet, we already noticed some corners that TCL had to cut to keep the price within the three-digit mark. The drawbacks include the lack of some of the standard ports found on a modern TV like DVI, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort.

Nevertheless, it just doesn’t get any better than a USD999 50-inch 4K TV, right?

LG shows off world’s slimmest full HD LCD panel

LG has recently introduced the world’s slimmest full HD LCD panel for smartphones that measures 2.2 mm thin and features better “grip-ability” and superior viewing experience.

LG’s new 5.2-inch full HD LCD panel claims to be the slimmest and narrowest among existing full HD LCD panels for mobile devices. It is 2.2 mm thin with a 2.3 mm bezel and uses LG’s Advanced One-Glass-Solution (OGS) technology. LG believes that this will help produce devices that are easier to grip and lighter in weight.

The display’s 1080 X 1920 pixels utilizes Red, Green, Blue (RGB) sub-pixels and is capable of up to 535 nits of brightness at maximum with “perfect performance” even in strong outdoor sunlight conditions.

Although the panel’s size coincides with the Optimus G2′s rumored specs, LG provided no hint if the upcoming flagship will sport the said display technology.

Fun Finds: 40″ Toshiba PU200 Power TV for just Php21k

Saw this 40-inch Toshiba LED TV last month while checking out some electronics stores in the malls (I think this was in Robinson’s Malate). They were selling it for just Php21,390 (after cash discount) so I picked up one and used it in the condo.

At that size, I though the Php21k was already a good deal, considering this is a Toshiba (the store was the Robinson’s Appliance Store in Robinson’s Malate).

I actually have an ageing 40-inch Toshiba TV at home and already gave it away to friends earlier this year (among other stuff). It lasted me for many years so I thought it was only fitting I’d get another Toshiba in its stead. I remember buying the old unit for about Php70k in Ansons about three years ago so one can only be amazed how affordable LED TVs are nowadays.

A lot of people were asking where I got this (after posting it on Instagram) and forgot to share the details so here you go. Just right on the budget but large enough for a studio unit. The TV now sits in our Team Tech Squad studio and will be used as backdrop for season 2.
