BenQ intros GW2760HS, eye-friendly monitor

Nowadays display panels are all about better image quality, color reproduction and lesser power consumption. However, manufacturers seem to be forgetting one crucial factor in the equation – the consumer’s eye health.

So instead of focusing on gazillion-to-one contrast ratio and other crap that most consumers don’t even know or care about, BenQ has added a set of features to their new monitor that can lessen eyesight degradation due to long exposure to computer screens.

They got these things like Senseye® Reading Mode and Automatic Eye-Protect Sensor that intelligently adjusts the display panel’s brightness to optimize clarity and eye comfort. But the most important aspect of their new monitors is its “De-flickering Backlight Circuit Controller” which eliminates monitor flickers that causes eye fatigue and other eye problems.

BenQ GW2760HS specs:
27-inch LED backlit AMVA display
1920×1080 screen resolution
300 nits
De-flickering Backlight Circuit Controller
16:9 Aspect Ratio
3000:1 Contrast Ratio
1x HDMI, 1x VGA, 1x DVI

Unfortunately, we didn’t get any info on when the 27-inch Widescreen BenQ GW2760HS will be available in the local market or its SRP when it does hit the shelves. However, they did promise that they’ll let us know about the details as soon they can.

JDI starts production of Full HD WhiteMagic displays

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has announced that it has started mass production of “WhiteMagic” – a 5-inch Full HD high luminance TFT LCD module.

According to JDI, WhiteMagic adds a White (W) subpixel into a Red/Green/Blue (RGB) LCD panel which improves picture brightness. This new Full-HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) LCD panel can produce surface luminance of up to 840cd/m2, better than what the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 can produce which is at 660cd/m2.

In addition to the improved brightness, WhiteMagic can also reduce power consumption by scanning “the input picture image data through a unique algorithm which derives the best signal processing to drive the LCD panel and backlight.”

JDI WhiteMagic specs:
Screen size (diagonal): 5.0inch (12.6cm)
Number of pixels: 1,080 (x RGB) x 1,920 (Full-HD)
Resolution density: 446ppi
Display mode: Transmissive
Dimensions: 63.24mm (W) x 117.18mm (H)
Surface luminance: 840cd/m2 (typ.)
NTSC ratio: 70?
Contrast ratio: 1000 : 1 (typ.)

JDI will exhibit the WhiteMagic displays at the FPD International 2013 in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan on October 23 to 25, 2013.

Sony showcases 55 and 65-inch 4K TVs in Tokyo HQ

Sony invited us here in Tokyo to get a good tour of their offices and talk to key executives about their 4K technology. They also gave us an exclusive “The Square Tour” with all the gadget goodness though it’s unfortunate we’re not allowed to take photos or videos.

We’ve already had a several close encounters with the Bravia 4K before — first time was when we used it on the set of @geekynights last year (the 84-inch model worth Php1.2 Million) and the second time with these new models (the KD-X9004A) back in May at the Shang in Boracay.

While the original 84-inch model has been in the market for close to a year now, the move to take 4K closer to consumers is signified by the introduction of more conventional sizes like the 55-inch and 65-inch models.

I am told at least four (4) people in the Philippines have already bought the Php1.2 million 4K TV back in the Philippines. With the availability of the smaller-sized models, Sony is hoping to sell more of them 4K TVs in the country.

The 55-inch Bravia 4K TV sells for about Php299k while the 65-inch retails for Php399k in the Philippines.

These 4K TVs have 4 times the resolution of the regular full HD 1080p displays (that’s 3840×2160 pixels). That’s a resolution that is ideal for larger TV display sizes (55 inches and above).

Sony also showed us other more practical uses of their 4k technology, especially in broadcasting. They even attempted to put together three 4K video cameras to make one very high-resolution footage of a football game. This allows the broadcast to just capture and crop any 1080p frame within the entire footage without the need to pan and zoom into the field/stadium, thereby reducing the need or multiple cameraman setup.

Sony also demoed to us the CineAlta F55 and CineAlta F65 (pictured above) which are 4K cameras used to film the movie Oblivion and After Earth.

For the movie After Earth, M. Night Shyamalan picked out three of them CineAlta F65s as the main camera, each one costing about $77,000.
