Tutorial: How to manually update your ZenFone 2 and ZenFone 2 Laser into Android 6.0 Marshmallow

ASUS has began rolling out its Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the ZenFone 2, ZenFone 2 Laser 5.0/5.5 and ZenFone Max, which means it will eventually hit all devices as an over-the-air (OTA) update. Unfortunately, that could take several days or weeks, which can feel like an eternity. The good news is that you can download the official FOTA update straight from ASUS website and manually install it yourself. Do note that only the ZenFone 2 (ZE551ML/ZE550ML) and ZenFone 2 Laser (ZE500KL/ZE550KL) devices are currently supported for the manual update, the full firmware of the ZenFone Max is not yet available.

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to manually update your ZenFone 2 into the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Note: Before you do this, make sure to backup all your files first. I will not be responsible for anything that happens to you or your device when following this tutorial.

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Download the full firmware from ASUS. Be careful to select your device accordingly.

    ZenFone 2 LaserZE500KL    ZE550KL
Note: After the download has been completed, just leave the firmware on the root storage of your device OR if you are using your computer to download, copy the file also to the root storage. File size is roughly 1.2GB – 1.6GB, use a stable internet connection preferably Wi-Fi.
  2. Once the above step is done, you will be notified of a “System Update File Detected” on your notification bar. If you do not get a notification, restart your device.
  3. You should see the prompt to select the firmware package you’ve downloaded, make sure that is selected and click on OK. After this, your phone will restart and begin upgrading toy Marshmallow. Then you will see that “Installing System Update” and “Android is upgrading” message.
Note: It will take roughly 20-30 Minutes for the update to be completed, the phone can’t be used until the update is completed.
  4. Your ZenFone 2 / ZenFone 2 Laser is now upgraded into Android 6.0 Marshmallow!
You will be greeted with the Marshmallow notifications as the phone booted up and you will also get a prompt that the “System update is successful”.  You may need to update Google Play services and some of the preloaded ASUS apps after the update, so please check it and do so.

This 17-year old Filipino built a working BB-8 droid

Angelo Casimiro, the same student who made shoes that charge smartphones, is at it once again and this time, he builds a fully-functioning BB-8 droid from the latest Star Wars movie.

The droid replica is phone-controlled and was made with household materials and Arduino circuitry. With Angelo’s know-how on electronics and robotics, doing this project was fairly simple for him and he even posted a detailed tutorial on instructables.com where you can follow his steps on making your own working droid just like in the movie.

As for the materials, an instructional video posted by TechBuilder shows that he bought the necessary items (like paint, glue and a beach ball) from a hardware store and everything else is recycled — like the Christmas ball for BB-8’s eye, a Wi-Fi router antenna, and roll-on deodorant balls for the mechanism of the droid’s head that stays upright all the time.

Although Angelo is the brains behind this project, his family helped him in some areas like painting the body and designing it to be faithful to the markings of the droid in the movie. It’s also reported that he is currently making some improvements on the droid before its scheduled TV appearance.

If you want to make one for yourself, the above video shows you just that. It covers the steps from making the body itself down to the mechanism and programming the software so you could control it from a smartphone.
