Just when we thought that Acer already took the crown for having one the cheapest Windows-powered tablets in town in the form of the new Iconia Tab 8 W, Toshiba announces an even cheaper tablet running on Windows 8.1, the Encore Mini, which will only retail for USD119 when it becomes available later this month.
Toshiba Encore Mini specs:
7-inch WSVGA LCD screen, 1024 x 600 @169ppi
1.33GHz Intel Atom Z3735G quad-core processor
Intel HD Graphics GPU
1GB RAM
Expandable 16GB internal storage
Supports up 128GB MicroSD card
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
Micro-USB 2.0 port
2MP rear camera
VGA front camera
13Whr battery, 7 hours battery life
Windows 8.1
As you can see on its specs sheet, Toshiba had cut some corners in order to keep the price at a minimum. The Encore Mini has a smaller display than the Iconia Tab 8 W and with a lower resolution too. Furthermore, it only offers half of the internal storage of Acer’s new 8-inch slate and its battery has a lower mileage-per-full-charge.
Despite of its shortcomings, the new Toshiba Encore Mini should still be in the list of budget-conscious consumers who are in the market for an affordable tablet running on Windows. As mentioned earlier, the tablet will be retailed for USD199 and will be available starting on September 17.
