Multiply.com shutting down on May 6

In what could be a huge surprise, Mutiply Philippines has just announced that it will be shutting down operations on May 6, 2013. This is after a site re-design and massive marketing campaign in the whole of 2012.

Copy of the letter were sent to Multiply merchants today.

Dear Multiply Merchant,

We regret to inform you that Multiply will be closing the marketplace on May 6, 2013 and discontinuing all business operations by May 31, 2013.

Multiply will maintain normal site operations through May 6th and will wind things down through to the end of the month. We will use the rest of May to make sure that all accounts are settled and that you receive all funds you earned on the platform. We hope this provides you time needed to identify and migrate to alternative ecommerce platforms, settle all payments on items bought and delivered, and try to minimize disruption to your business.

In order to ensure that all your earnings are disbursed to you in full prior to May 31, we will cut off buying activity on May 6, 2013. This will ensure that all orders have sufficient time to be completed and delivered to your customers before the end of the month.

If you have a Trust Badge, please contact our customer support team and we will ensure that you receive a pro-rated refund for the remaining time on your subscription.

If my team can be of any assistance to you during this transition, we will do our best to help.

Respectfully yours,

Jack Madrid
Multiply Country Manager – Philippines

A similar notice has been posted on the Multiply site today.

A lot of huge merchants have been depending on Multiply for lead generation and we’ve reached out to some of them for comments.

According to Martin Bornilla of Widget City:

“Multiply has helped a lot of business, especially the start-up ones, to reach a lot of consumers thru email blasts, the common landing pages, and get customers connected to a wide variety of merchants. The site has helped us in marketing thru Facebook Ads, free shipping and free transaction fees. The subsidized products are also a huge help.”

An estimated 15% of Widget City’s business comes from Multiply.

Sony launches world’s fastest internet service in Japan

Thought Google Fiber is the fastest internet service money can afford? Well, think again because So-Net Entertainment Corporation, a local ISP in Japan and a subsidiary of Sony Corporation has recently unveiled NURO, the world’s fastest home internet that’s twice the speed of what Google has to offer.

internet

NURO runs on Japan’s GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optics Network) which is capable of handling top DL speed of up to 2.49Gbps. From the network, it is distributed to offices and households through optical fiber which then passes through a device called ONU (Optical Network Unit) that converts the signal to broadband internet.

So how fast is So-Net’s NURO? It’s capable of an eye-popping downlink speed of 2Gbps with an upload speed of 1Gbps. It’s so fast that it makes our current LTE service look like dial-up connection when pitted against it.

The service is being offered in Japan for USD51 on a two-year contract plus an additional USD535 for installation fee. Now imagine if we can hook up to that kind of connection. Not bad, considering that you’re getting what you’ve signed up for unlike here in our country.

Top April Fools Day pranks on the web

It’s over guys! We can tune down our paranoia on pranks now, but while the excitement and humor hasn’t completely subsided yet, take a look at the jokes & pranks on the internet that caught our attention the most.

april fools

To be honest, we were very cautious with the news popping around the internet because in some corners that we go to, we can’t help but stumble into April Fools Day pranks; some were extremely obvious, some were really convincing and some were totally eye-catching.

Asus ZenHome Appliances

ZenHome

We saw this one on Asus Philippines’ Facebook Page and it boasted the ZenRidge, the ZenWasher, the ZenWave & the ZenDish – which is expected to have Asus’ signature metallic spun finish and some neat features. It also commented that they might need a quad-compressor so we don’t have to wait for our food to get cold - which makes it a little more clever.

The Google Pranks

The search giant felt a little too prankster today as they released more than one prank today – and they’re all professionally made. There’s Gmail Blue, which is a massive leap for Gmail as a whole. Then there’s Google Nose, which we’ve covered already, a new service that allows you to smell some things off the internet. Another one involves YouTube; they stated that the site was a scheme all along to find the best video ever, and that they will go offline until 2023 – only then will they announce the winner. You can go watch the video here. There are many more from Google, ranging from Analytics to Maps. You might want to explore that.

Instagram for Windows Phone

“Your #2InstawithLove prayer has been aswered!” Instagram was released by Microsoft for Windows Phone… not. It was quite a cruel joke for those who were getting their hopes up for the much-longed for app. The screenshots seemed real from the bottom up and you can’t really install it as it is written down below the description – “Happy April 1st, 2013!”.

Sony Animalia

Sony claims that we leave out one member of the family often – the pet, which is why Sony is introducing a new line of products called Animalia, which aims to give your pets a brand new living experience. You can watch the video here.

There are quite more than the ones stated above; for example, TwttrThe microblogging site stated in their blog that from now on, users can no longer use vowels on their tweets. Nokia, on the other hand, announced their new touchscreen microwave – the Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation.

What about you? What were the pranks that caught your attention today, or perhaps what were the ones that you found creative? Happy April Fools Day everyone!

Globe’s iToolbar mysteriously reappears

We’ve been getting reports from users in the past several days about the Globe iToolbar popping up again on their mobile phones and tablets. Even our old story from back in May 2012 has been revived with user feedback about it.

We have not encountered the toolbar ourselves until tonight when it mysteriously appeared on our laptop browser. Here’s a screenshot of the Globe iToolbar showing up on the Netvibes page (we’re tethered to a Globe iPhone 5).

It’s not showing on other pages except the Netvibes page. It eventually disappeared after a couple of page refresh. In any case, it now confirms the re-appearance of the widget that was previously scrapped by Globe.

Anybody else seeing the iToolbar lately?
