Smart explains LTE on iPhone 5

Smart held a Q&A session earlier today regarding their LTE roll-out for the iPhone 5. They answered questions regarding the unli plans, data caps, additional charges, area of coverages, subscriptions and SIM provisioning.

What’s free and what’s not?

At the moment, Smart is providing free access to their LTE network to all postpaid subscribers under iPhone 5 Plan 999, iPhone 5 Plan 2499, Unli Data Plan 1500, 2000 and 3000.

This free unli access will last up to April 30, 2013.

What happens after April 30?

No exact details were given. By default, it only means they will stop offering it for free. How much the charges will be after that time has not yet been determined.

Will there be data caps?

Yes, it is stated in their Fair Use Policy. No bandwidth cap was specifically mentioned but based on existing LTE handset plans (Sony Xperia V LTE), it would be 1.5GB/month for Unli Data Plan 1500 and 2.5GB/month for Unli Data Plan 2000.

There was also mention of moderating the use of tethering the iPhone 5 to your laptop.

What if I reached the data cap?

You will be redirected to a page where you can subscribe to additional bandwidth allocations.

What if I bought my open-line iPhone 5 outside of the country?

You can call Smart to get an LTE-provisioned SIM card. Not available to prepaid users and Freedom Plan subscribers.

But I paid for my unlimited and I should use it any way I want!

There’s a provision for that in the Fai Use Policy:

Smart intends to preserve the integrity of the network in order to provide ALL subscribers with high quality mobile data services. Smart reserves the right to suspend or terminate service to customers whose improper or abusive use of mobile browsing may jeopardize our ability to deliver the best customer experience to other subscribers.

Globe confirms free unlimited LTE on iPhone 5

Globe Telecom has finally confirmed that all iPhone 5 postpaid subscribers will get access to their LTE network at no additional charge. This means that if you are currently on a MySuperSurf data plan, you can get LTE for free.

In press release sent to us by Globe, they have finally lived up to their commitment of free unlimited LTE to their existing subscribers. They first announced this back in December.

The release indicated this development.

Globe subscribers on iPhone 5 postpaid plans can now experience fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) on their devices by updating to Apple’s latest software, the iOS6.1.

The availability is on the heels of Apple’s announcement that it has enabled the LTE functionality of the iPhone 5 in the Philippines.

With this development, Globe postpaid subscribers on iPhone 5 can enjoy blazing mobile internet speeds of up to 42 Mbps in LTE-covered areas without having to upgrade their plans or pay extra charges.

To enjoy LTE coverage on their iPhone 5, subscribers need to update to iOS 6.1 and use an LTE Nano-SIM.

Globe’s LTE network is heavily concentrated in Makati although it is now also available in select areas in Manila, Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig City, Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, Cebu City, and Boracay.

Meanwhile, Smart also sent a press release stating they will offer unlimited LTE to all data plan subscribers until April 30.

Smart iPhone 5 subs get free LTE until April 30

Apple released the iOS 6.1 update the iPhone 5 earlier today and both Smart and Globe subscribers have had their iPhone 5 handset activated for LTE. Smart then announced they are giving subs free, unlimited access to their LTE network until April 30.

In a press release posted by Smart today, all subs with unlimited data plans will also get the same under their LTE network.

“Subscribers of Smart iPhone 5 postpaid plans with unlimited data can now get download speeds that are up to 20 times faster than the usual 3G connection on their mobile device,” said Smart Executive Vice President and Wireless Consumer Division Head Emmanuel C. Lorenzana. “You can enjoy this superior broadband service in a growing number of LTE zones in Metro Manila and in key cities in different parts of the country,” Lorenzana added.

Smart iPhone 5 users on iPhone Plans 999 and 2499 and Unlidata Plans 1500, 2000, and 3000 can automatically use Smart LTE for free until April 30, 2013.

After the April 30 unlimited promo period, Smart might start charging additional fee for LTE access. As to how much that will be, Smart has not decided yet.

Still, Smart iPhone 5 users can enjoy unli-LTE in the next 3 months.
