X-mini Evolve Bluetooth Headphone Speakers Quick Review

Aside from the Click, we have another X-mini audio device in our arsenal. If the Click is an ultra-portable Bluetooth speaker, the new device we have is a fusion of a Bluetooth headphone and a portable speaker in one. This is our quick review of the X-mini Evolve.

Design and Construction

When we first find out that the Evolve is a dual-purpose device, we expected it to look different from the rest of the Bluetooth headphones but that’s not the case. When you open the packaging of the product, it’s presented in its folded state. The two ear cups can be folded when storing although there’s no included pouch or hard case for it. Its two-tone gold and black hues give it a bit of character when worn.

The device is well-cushioned, both for the head and the ears. The leather material for the ear-muffs are soft and should not give much strain when used for hours. The control buttons are located on the right cup including the power/Bluetooth switch plus the volume up and down. Two ports are also situated here, one micro-USB port for charging and a 3.5mm jack for a wired connection, and the microphone pinhole. Also on the right side is the simple switch for headphone and speaker function.

x-mini-evolve-10

The overall construction of the Evolve is surprisingly great. It flexes without a hint of creak plus the arm gives satisfying clicks when adjusted. The glossy body is attractive to fingerprints and smudges but nothing unusual here.

Features and Setup

The wireless headphone slash speaker connects via Bluetooth with support for version 4.1 and the profiles that come with it. The operation is simple, just long press to turn it on and you’ll hear a prompt and the LED will blink blue, keep on pressing until you hear a second prompt which then lights up a blinking red indicating that it’s open for pairing.

x-mini-evolve-5

The Evolve supports hands-free calling thanks to the built-in microphone so you don’t have to reach out for your phone when answering or rejecting a call.

x-mini-evolve-11

As mentioned, the Evolve’s main trick is the ability to become a speaker when you want. While the inner drivers on both ear cups are for private listening, the exterior grille hides the additional drivers for it to be able to produce louder sounds. The process of switching is fast and simple. Just slide the switch to your preferred mode of use and it will instantly function.

Sound Quality

Evolve’s main purpose is to be your Bluetooth headphone, understandably the quality would go to the inner drivers. When connected using Bluetooth to a Moto E (2nd Gen), the sound quality is good with decent mids and highs. Although, the bass tends to muffle and overpower at times, especially when it comes to electronic music. The main player conveniently used is Spotify with streaming settings set on Extreme — not the best benchmarking tool but it’s what’s common.

x-mini-evolve-3

As for the loudspeaker function, it’s definitely nowhere near the dedicated Bluetooth speakers, even with tiny ones like the brand’s own Click. It’s more of an additional feature for those who likes to wear headphones on their neck and listen to more audible music. It’s amazing though to have dual-purpose headphones.

Battery Life

What’s giving juice to the device is a built-in 1000mAh rechargeable battery cell with a claimed rating of up to 30 hours of listening when used as a headphone or down to 6 hours if as a speaker. While we weren’t able to affirm the exact hours of continuous playback, since its last full recharge about 5 days ago, the headphones still have juice with accumulated use of 3-4 hours per day.

Conclusion

For Php 5,490, the Xmini Evolve is a pretty decent Bluetooth headphone and a wireless speaker as well. Its dual function is a nifty feature to have and does have its perks. You can avail of this through the following stores: Electroworld, Abensons, PowerMac, Egghead Audiohub, Robinson’s Galleria, Astroplus, Takatack, Lazada, Storm Benefits, Reeco.ph, Beeper City, Odyssey, Telcom Davao City.

JBL Clip Quick Review

Summer trips are already popping into social media. An appreciated stuff one can bring is a portable speaker. If you’re looking for one, then you might want to check a speaker from JBL that’s very compact and can clip on to your straps. Hence the name, JBL Clip.

The JBL Clip features a circular design with a carabiner on top, all surrounded by a rubberized grip. The device is just as big as our palms. The carabiner can fit most straps, particularly those on topmost of travel bags or rucksacks. Cleverly, the controls and ports are placed around it.

The left side has the Bluetooth switch, the power button, and the answer key with the microphone beside it. While the right has the volume buttons, and the line in port to daisy chain several speakers. Below is the micro-USB port for charging. The front grille with the JBL logo covers the lone driver and an LED indicator. Going behind the device reveals the 3.5mm jack that is neatly tucked in its holder.

If there’s something we’ll nitpick about the Clip is the stiffness of the buttons. It is also hard to identify where the buttons are even though they are properly labeled. In addition, our unit’s orange rubberized body attracts dirt and smudges so keeping it clean can be a challenge.

With casual tests, we are able to find out that the JBL Clip can be a good portable speaker suitable for traveling. Connectivity-wise you have the option to use the 3.5mm jack or connect wirelessly via Bluetooth. Volume can get really high and the loudness can be heard even outdoors. Just make sure to pump up the volume on both the player and speaker to get the loudest output possible. Vocals sound decent, as well as the bass, though it isn’t as low as we wish it to be. Nevertheless, it delivers good performance overall.

You can also receive and answer calls through it. Making it an all-around hands-free speaker. We aren’t able to test how well the microphone can pick up voice when outdoors, but indoor performance is good.

According to JBL, the speaker has a rated battery life up to 5 hours but with our casual use, we are able to get around 4 hours. Not a bad number but battery life may vary depending on usage and volume levels.

If we are to bring a compact speaker for a trek or hike, we will definitely include the JBL Clip to our choices. Its portable design and loud yet clear output is already a good selling point. Add to that the Bluetooth and hands-free feature. However, the lack of water-proofing is a let-down. With an SRP of Php2,995, it is a good option for those who need it.

JBL Clip is available at:
JBL Sound Gallery- B3, Bonifacio High Street
JBL Acoustical Space- 4th Floor Cyberzone SM Megamall Bldg B
JBL Digital Dreams- 4th Floor Cyberzone SM North EDSA Annex
JBL/Harman Kardon Pop-up Store- Level 3, TriNoma (near Terra Agua and Top Man)
JBL/Harman Kardon Store- Level 3, Fairview Terraces

JBL Clip specifications:
Transducer: 1 x 40mm
Rated Power: 3.2W
Frequency response: 160Hz – 20,000Hz
Signal-to-noise ratio: >80 dB
Bluetooth v3.0
Bluetooth transmitter power: 0-4 dBm
Bluetooth transmitter frequency range: 2.402 – 2.480 GHz
Lithium-ion Polymer 600mAh
Dimension: 107 mm x 88 mm x 42 mm
Weight: 150 g

What we liked about it:

  • Portable clip design
  • High volume levels
  • Clear vocals and good overall output
  • Rubberized texture provide better grip and scratch protection

What we didn’t:

  • Rubberized texture attracts dirt
  • Bass can be better
  • Mono sound
  • No IPXX certification

SOL REPUBLIC Punk Quick Review

There are a lot of wireless speakers available in the market today that function through the use of Bluetooth, but the selection narrows down when you look for a Bluetooth speaker that’s really easy to carry around. The SOL REPUBLIC Punk is a compact wireless speaker that promises to be able to tag along anywhere you go.

The Punk, as we’ve already established, has a small form factor. It has a square body that easily fits inside the hand and at just 318 grams it’s also pretty light. Its design follows the company’s grid-like patterns across the entire face which we’ve seen with the DECK Bluetooth/NFC speaker that we reviewed before.

SOL-REPUBLIC-Punk-4

This compact speaker equally measures 5,1 inches in length and width, and is no bigger than an average computer mouse. It is surrounded with a rubber protection making it able to withstand accidental drops and liquid spills, while the top and bottom are made of hard plastic with matte finish.

SOL-REPUBLIC-Punk-3

It has a rubber flap on the side that covers its microUSB port, Audio IN, and Audio OUT via 3.5mm jacks. The IN port connects a music player to the Punk using a cable, while the OUT port lets users connect the speaker to another (maybe bigger) speaker and use the Punk as a Bluetooth streamer. This flap also seals the opening from water or dirt — as the entire device is water, dust, and shock resistant.

SOL-REPUBLIC-Punk-1

Navigational buttons for the Punk come embedded inside the rubber protection and can be accessed by pressing said rubber that are textured to represent the buttons. Referring to the above photo, we have the Bluetooth, volume up, play/pause, volume down, and power buttons. There is also an LED indicator below the play/pause button to indicate power, battery, and Bluetooth pairing.

Underneath, SOL REPUBLIC made a threaded mount so you can use it on more instances. For example, it can be attached to the handlebars of a bike using an additional bike mount so you can still listen to your music while going for a spin. It’s a nice touch and it shows that the company was thoughtful enough to include it and add more ruggedness to the device.

SOL-REPUBLIC-Punk-5

As for sound quality, its drivers give out bigger sound than you’d expect. It can go loud and would fill a medium-sized room. We also took the time to mount it on a bike as mentioned earlier and it provided good volume for us — and those near us while on the street. Sound quality was overall clear, although turning it up to the maximum volume showed some slight distortions.

Highs and mids are pleasant, but the lows/bass are lacking. This is quite understandable since the Punk was made to be as portable as possible and not to sound perfect.

Through Bluetooth, the company boasts that it can go up to 60 feet which is around double the usual range of an ordinary Bluetooth speaker. So we left the speaker in one room and tried moving the wirelessly-connected device in different rooms to see where the connection would be cut off, and we had to go one floor down and into the room on the opposite side of the house until the signal was interrupted. We’ve never reached this far with the previous Bluetooth speakers while testing them, so that’s good news.

The company claims it can last 8 hours of continuous playback, but it only got us a few minutes past 2 hours. Keep in mind, though, that we streamed music via Bluetooth and set the volume to maximum. The stated battery life probably refers to playing music through wired connection and moderate volume.

SOL-REPUBLIC-Punk-7

SOL REPUBLIC’s Punk is a handy speaker to have around. It not only functions well indoors, but also outdoors with its protection from water, dust, and accidental drops. The strength of Bluetooth connectivity was above average and it won our favor. If you’re out for an ultra-portable wireless speaker, make sure to put this lil’ Punk on your list.

SOL REPUBLIC Punk specs:
Amplifier Power: 5.7W
Frequency Response: 150Hz – 20 kHz
Wireless Range: up to 60 feet
5.1 x 5.1 x 2.3 inches (dimensions)
318 grams (weight)
Water, dust, and shock resistant
Price: Php4,000
