Design and Construction

The Sony H.ear Go SRS-HG1 has five different eye-catching looks in Lime Yellow, Viridian Blue, Bordeaux Pink, Charcoal Black and Cinnabar Red. There are five soft buttons on smooth-to-the-touch finish top — Power, Extra Bass, Volume Up and Down, and Hands-free Call. You will also see on this side the six tiny LED lights with assigned labels that indicate the different modes and functions of the speaker — Charge, Link, Network, Bluetooth, USB and Audio In. Pressing the “Extra Bass” button on top allows you to enter Sony’s Extra Bass technology that promises to deliver deep and punchy bass sound, while pressing the “Power” button longer will activate the Bluetooth pairing option. Additionally, the NFC chip is placed on this side for easy pairing to any NFC-enabled devices.

Take a look at the back and you will see another grill for the rear bass radiator. There is also a big “Function” button on the upper right corner for you to switch into the different connection modes. The micro-USB and the DC IN are located on the lower back along with the 3.5mm port for wired connection. This is also where the Stereo Pair, Set Up and Update/WPS button are also sitted in line with the Left and Right Stereo indicators.

Sound Quality

The Sony H.ear Go SRS-HG1 features a dual 35mm full-range drivers and passive radiators paired with high resolution audio. It also has an array of connectivity options like the standard 3.5mm audio input, Bluetooth, USB, DLNA and Wi-Fi. We often end up using its Wi-Fi connectivity option to connect into our home network so that we can directly stream music via Google Cast or Spotify Connect.

Like any Sony speakers, it boasts exceptional sound quality. The battery life is rated at around 12 hours, which is great. It’s excellent when it comes to highs with clean midrange that made vocals sound crisp and present. It obviously got a punchier bass, thanks to its extra bass feature, which overall improved the sound quality. It also excelled with Chainsmokers’ Closer and Roses with a mellow and smooth bass drop.

Furthermore, if you’re a type of person who always want to follow the beat, its precise detail and powerful bass will surely take you anywhere at all times. Since it fusions stunning sound with easy connectivity, this wireless speaker is undeniably a perfect choice. Check out our product demo video below of the Sony SRS-HG1 featuring some of the EXUDE Dancers from our friends at Far Eastern University Institute of Technology.

Conclusion

The Sony H.ear Go SRS-HG1 is one of the best sounding wireless speakers you can buy with one caveat: it’s a little bit pricey at Php9,999. Additionally, it may not be as compact or have quite sturdy design compare to others, but it still sounds exceptional and visually-appealing. The addition of its wide range of connectivity may also come in handy for users who bring their speaker everywhere they go. This is certainly worth checking out if you are looking for a high-end wireless speaker with high-resolution audio and is capable of delivering deep and clear bass.

Sony Xperia C5 Ultra Review

The C series of the Xperia line has always been focused on large displays and front camera for selfies. Jumping to its 4th version, Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is ready to battle the world of phablets, 6 inches to be exact. If you’re looking for something like this smartphone, read our review to see if it will fit you and your palm.

Design and Construction

The Japanese phone maker has been loyal to its design language for most of its devices. While the C5 Ultra doesn’t have the OmniBalance design that the Z series has, its ridiculously thin side bezels are a beauty of its own.

XperiaC5Ultra_front

Upon seeing the device, we noticed how the large display dominates the front. The display measures 6 inches diagonally and has virtually no bezels, at least on the side. Above it is where the 13-megapixel selfie camera and LED flash sits along with the earpiece and multiple sensors while the loudspeaker is below the display.

XperiaC5Ultra_topfront

Going to the right, we have the two-stage shutter key, volume rocker, and power button. The left side has the slot for the microSD card and nano-SIM card, both are covered by a protective flap. There’s a reset pinhole hidden there as well.

XperiaC5Ultra_bottomfront

The 3.5mm jack is placed on top of the device, and the micro-USB port for charging and data transfer is at the bottom with the primary microphone.

XperiaC5Ultra_top&bottom

Lastly, the back of the device is the home of another 13-megapixel shooter and LED flash, noise-cancelling microphone, and NFC chip (marked by a stylized N).

XperiaC5Ultra_leftside

Holding the 6-incher feels outright good thanks to its aluminum frame. Additionally, the thin bezel contributes to better handling despite having a large panel. Most of us thought than the C5 Ultra has a removable battery but, to our disappointment, its glossy back panel gives no access.

Display

The 6-inch display is an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. While the full high definition glory is stretched to 6 inches, the 367ppi density is still sharp and crisp. Like any other IPS panels, the display is viewable from any angle, thus making the phablet ideal for content sharing which could be the main reason why Sony released a big smartphone. Outdoor visibility is also great unless you’re under direct sunlight.

XperiaC5Ultra_screen

Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 is onboard to improve overall quality when viewing photos and videos on the device. Aside from the BRAVIA Engine, under the display settings panel is a Super-vivid mode that punches the saturation level to the top. We suggest the Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 for most cases, although we encountered an issue in a YouTube video playback causing the skin and lips to soften like those Camera 360 beauty selfies. You can turn down any screen optimization in the settings anytime. Keep in mind, BRAVIA Engine and Super-vivid mode only applies during media playback.

You can also adjust the white balance according to your liking and there’s a glove mode for increased touch sensitivity. A smart backlight control is available too. It automatically detects if you’re holding the smartphone to keep the screen on until you place it down.

Sony to Bring Smart B-Trainer to PH

Sony Philippines has announced the impending arrival of their latest wireless headset – the Sony B-Trainer (SSE-BTR1). But before you scoff at this fancy wireless headset, you should know that it does more than play your favorite tunes while you’re working out.

The Sony B-Trainer is essentially a geeked-out wireless headset stuffed with various sensors like heartrate monitor, accelerometer, gyroscope (among many others) that allows it to gather information about your work out sessions.

sony b-trainer philippines

Just like any other notable wearable device, the B-Trainer feeds the data it gathered through a companion app aptly called Smart B-Trainer for Running which allows users to view their progress and, most importantly, the amount of calories they burned during the session on their smartphone or tablet.

What sets it apart from its peers is that users won’t even have to reach out for their smartphone to know all of these stats. The B-Trainer will periodically tell them their current heart rate and distance ran. It can also be configured to provide training tips for a more efficient work out.

Sony also found a better use for the Smart B-Trainer’s heartrate sensor – song suggestions. This wireless headset can be set to automatically pull songs from its library (stored inside its built-in 16GB internal storage) that would match your current heartrate.

Lastly, the Sony Smart B-Trainer is IPX8/IPX5 certification, meaning it can be submerged underwater down to two (2) meters deep for 30 minutes.

Sony Smart B-Trainer (SSE-BTR1) specs:

16GB internal storage
Monaural microphone
Bluetooth 4.0
NFC
IPX5/IPX8 Certification
Frequency Response: 20 to 20,000 KHz
Sensors: Heartrate, GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, electronic compass and barometer
Data measured: heart rate, burned calories, distance, time, speed, pace, cadence, steps, stride, running route and elevation
Supported Audio Formats: MP3, WMA, ATRAC, Linear PCM & AAC
Supported Mobile OS (for app): Android 4.1 or later and iOS 7 or later

The Sony Smart B-Trainer will hit the local shelves starting next month. The local SRP has not made available to us at the time of writing.
