Samsung Galaxy S3 gets Premium Suite Upgrade

In a two-part blog entry in Samsung’s official global blog , the South Korean manufacturer detailed the new features included in the Premium Suite Upgrade that will hit Galaxy S3 users in the next coming weeks. Get to know these features included in this upgrade after the break.

SGS3

Ever since Google released the latest iteration of their open-source platform, manufacturers have been busy porting the Jelly bean upgrade for their devices. Wanting to differentiate itself from the rest, Samsung has also included a ton of new features to the update, which they coined Premium Suite Upgrade, instead of just boringly updating their current flagship device’s OS.

Contextual Awareness

• Page Buddy: Your phone will smartly predict what you intend to do according to your actions. For example, when you plug in your earphones, the device automatically opens up a page with the music player.

• Contextual Menu: When you list up apps, you can now choose to see the most frequently used ones first. Especially convenient when you’re looking through apps to find files to attach.

• Contextual Tag: When you take a picture on the phone, you can tag the weather, date, and place immediately.

Enhanced Features

• Multi-Window: You can open two different apps at the same time into two different windows on the mobile screen.

• Auto Share Shot Pairing using NFC: By setting the camera to ‘Auto Share Shot’ mode, you can quickly share your photos and videos by simply tapping their GALAXY S III with other NFC and S-Beam enabled devices.

• Reader Mode: You can easily control the size of the text on your browser! Also, you can just click the webpage to share it!

• Facebook Lock Ticker: The easiest way to see your Facebook News Feeds – set your phone to show it on your lock screen.

Here’s a short video clip that showcases the aforementioned features:

Powerful Multimedia
• Paper Artist: You can make a picture like a pop artist! Change the moods of your pictures whenever you want!

• Camera, Low Light Shot: It’s always tough to take pictures in dark places. So the GALAXY S III with Premium Suite has a Low-Light-Shot function. Get your hands on one and check out the difference!

• Camera, Best Face: The problem with group pictures? Somebody always, ALWAYS blinks. Well, Best Face is your solution to that. Best Face takes 5 consecutive pictures and lets you choose the best face for each person among those shots.
New Features & Better Accessibility

• Easy Mode: For first-time smartphone users and/or those who are really really, well, lazy. This function helps you set up the most five frequently used widgets on the home screen, so you don’t have to be tired of looking everywhere to find those apps.

• Sound Balance: You can adjust the balance of volume one each side of earphones.

• Setup Wizard: After turning on your cell phone, you can see the accessibility menu right away on the screen.

• Camera Easy Snap: With ‘talk back’ and ‘face detection’ on your settings menu, the GALAXY S III tells you how many faces it can detect on the camera preview.

Unfortunately, Samsung didn’t mention when they plan to start seeding this awesome update. All they disclosed was that the update is dependent on location and network carrier. It’s a bummer no doubt, but we feel that the Premium Suite Upgrade should be worth the wait.

Android 4.2.1 ported to ASUS TF101

Just when we thought that there’ll be no light at the end of the tunnel for our Asus Transformer Pad TF101, RaymanFXof XDA-Developers comes up with an AOSP-based Android 4.2 build for the convertible tablet.

Being an AOSP-based build, the custom ROM brings almost all the things that Jellybean has to offer such as Multi-User support (up to 8 users), Quick Settings access (top right hand side) and Gesture Typing-enabled keyboard.

Tf101

As with other custom ROMs, however, you have to bear in mind that you’re likely to encounter some bugs along the way and some stuff will not work as it should after you installed the OS. Some of the things that RaymanFX noticed that is currently not working on the v0.5.0 includes Bluetooth, both the front and rear cameras and the Microphone. He plans to iron out these issues on his future build/s (v0.6.0), in fact he may already have fixed the rear camera as it seems to be working fine when users tried it.

HomeScreen

In spite of these red flags (and some other issues they’ve encountered which was not mentioned on the Change log such as Google Now), users who have tried RaymanFX’s build seemed pretty happy with it which suggests that the build is totally functional. If you like to try out the build, you can head on over to the source link below.

Devices that will soon get Jellybean update

It’s been little over 5 months since Google released the latest iteration of the Android OS and since then, manufacturers have pushed the update to their eligible devices. Now here’s a new set of devices from different manufacturers which will be getting the update in the next coming weeks.

razr

Motorola Mobility

The Google owned handset manufacturer has recently released a table which contains the handsets and tablets that will be updated to Jelly bean. As with other upgrades, the roll out date will be different depending on the country and carrier. These are the handsets in APAC (Asia Pacific) that will get the Android 4.1 with corresponding target roll out date.

MOTOROLA RAZR (XT910 / XT910S / XT910K) – Planned update, but no specific target date
MOTOROLA RAZR HD – Update rolls out starting this month
MOTOROLA RAZR M – Update rolls out by Q1 2013 starting in Australia
MOTOROLA RAZR V – Planned update, but no specific target date

Motorola Mobility is also looking to upgrade their other handsets such as RAZR MAXX, DROID 4 and DROID BIONIC in the future, but didn’t mention any target date for the update.

Samsung

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Wi-Fi joins the ranks of its 10-inch siblings Galaxy Note 10.1 and Nexus 10 as Samsung announces that it’ll be updated to Jelly bean. The roll out started since last week with British users getting the update first.

tab2

With the update well on its way, we’re expecting the local roll out will come in the next coming weeks. Unfortunately, for those of you who owns the data-enabled version of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, you have to wait a little longer for the official update.

ASUS

It hasn’t been that long since ASUS unveiled the second PadFone, but the company has already released the Jelly bean update for it.

PadFone2

According to our source, the overall feel of the UI is pretty much the same as it was when it’s running on ICS. The nifty features that the Android 4.1 update brings to the ASUS PadFone 2 includes updated notification bar, Google Now and Google offline voice typing.

Update: @Football4PDA, a trustworthy source for HTC leaks, has tweeted a handful of HTC handsets which will be updated to Jelly bean.

To keep things a bit interesting, the devices mentioned on the tweet were concealed behind its corresponding codenames such as Fireball, Evita and Totem. Thankfully our source decoded each handset’s true identity and provided the list of these HTC phones.

HTC

Evitare – One X+ LTE
Evita – One XL
Fireball – Droid Incredible 4G LTE
Jewel – EVO 4G LTE
K2 – One SV
Totem C2 – One VX
Ville – One S
Ville C2 – One S C2
Valente – Droid DNA/J/Butterfly/

Unfortunately, @Football4PDA didn’t mention when the update will start making its way to our beloved handsets or which one will get it first. Looking at the brighter side though (and assuming that the source is right), it’s good to know that HTC is trying to bring their devices up to speed with other Android handsets by updating it to Jelly bean.

Coming soon: Android 4.1.2 update for GT-N7000

Now here’s something I’ve been waiting for. SamMobile has recently reported that they got a hold of an almost complete Android 4.1.2 test firmware for the 5.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Note.

According to our source, the software build N7000XXLSA will boast features similar to the SGSII and SGNII. Here are some of the nifty features they’ve uncovered so far.
• Improved performance and stability, thanks to Project Butter
• Multi-View (Multi Windows Multitasking) like on the Note II
• Page Buddy
• New Additions in Notification Panel; Notification Panel can now be customized
• Smart Rotation (Screen Display adjusts to your angle of sightings)
• Continuous Input in Samsung Keyboard (Like Swipe or Android 4.2 Keyboard)
• Samsung’s Cloud services integration
• Direct Call, Smart Stay and Pop-up Play Features
• New Widgets From the Galaxy S III
• 2 Home screen modes

We’re not sure when Samsung will release the update, but from the looks of it, it seems that we won’t have to wait too long before they do. Android 4.2.1 update rolls out for Nexus 4, 7 and 10

A few weeks ago, the Android 4.2 Jellybean update was released for the latest Google Nexus devices. It was expected to add some improvements however, that update has caused an issue with the device’s Contacts app. To squash that bug, Google has rolled out the Android 4.2.1 update.

The update aims to fix the so called “December Birthday” bug that prevents a user to select the month of December for a contact’s birthday or anniversary. In addition, it also fixes Bluetooth issues that some users were experiencing. If this is the case, non-Nexus devices might just skip 4.2 and dive into 4.2.1 right away if ever an update should be released.

The Android 4.2.1 update is available via OTA. Try to check for updates manually on your Nexus if you didn’t get any notifications.
