Nexus 7 gets a taste of Open webOS

Back in October we’ve mentioned that HP has made the platform behind their short-lived tablet available for talented and passionate developers. In line with this, they’ve ported the said OS to various products, with the latest being the Google Nexus 7.

The platform is so versatile that developers were able to port it on a phone (Samsung/Google Galaxy Nexus), a 10-inch tablet (ASUS Transformer Prime) and even a touch-enable PC (HP TouchSmart PC). You can view the webOS 1.0 in action in our previous post here .

It seems that these devs are on a roll lately as they just announced that they were able to install the same OS to the most famous 7-inch tablet in the market. They’ve patterned the port from the HP TouchPad’s smaller brother the TouchPad Go. Here’s a short demo of the Nexus 7 running on webOS.

Given that the port is still on its Alpha stage, the experience isn’t exactly top-notch but with proper funding and ample time we’re optimistic that we’ll see a stable port in the near future.

HTC rolls out Jellybean update for the One S

It’s been long and agonizing wait for the owners of HTC’s mid-range One series handset, but the Taiwanese company has finally released the 5 months overdue Jelly Bean update for the One S. The question now is it worth the wait?

The phone should automatically prompt you about the update, but just in case it didn’t you can go to your device’s settings to manually check for it. When you do get the update prompt, you’ll be asked to download a whopping 612MB file that contains the Android 4.1.1 and the latest version of HTC proprietary UI, the Sense 4+.

Once you’re done downloading the humongous file, the device will automatically install the update and will reboot to a heavily skinned version of Android Jelly bean with a software version 3.16.401.8 (for those geeky users out there).

Apart from the update UI and the things that the Jelly Bean upgrade brings to the table, the update is also said to bring better Camera performance as well as improved power efficiency to the dual-core handset. Should you need more info about the HTC One S, you can head over to this link to read our full review.

Facebook for Android receives big update

Facebook for Android is now on version 2.0 and is expected to increase the speed and performance of the app – by a lot.

There is no drastic change in the design and the UI when we downloaded the update, but it surely did what the update specified it would do. It increased loading speeds by a mile.

Facebook’s Android app wasn’t the best out there quite a while back. In fact, we never found ourselves using the Facebook app alone; we had apps like Friendcaster on the sideline for some other purposes.

Facebook

The previous versions of the app used HTML5 and some codes that enabled different Android devices to work with it – that is why it was so slow. Now, the new Facebook app for Android is built from the ground up. Meaning, the codes are different which will resort to faster performances.

We noticed that it was indeed fast. Scrolling was smooth and loading times were short. Facebook is really trying to keep the grasp that they have on their users, and it is working. The Facebook app has undergone through a lot of updates. It’s not the perfect app, but it’s trying to be and it’s almost there.

The update/download is available at the Google Play Store.
