Android 4.2.2 update already?

Some reports have been circulating around the web about an unannounced incremental update (Android 4.2.2) for the Android Jellybean (no official announcement made as of the moment so we can’t confirm).

This news started when some folks from Brazil and Malaysia were surprised to see that their brand spanking new Nexus 4 is running on Android 4.2.2 when they checked the phone’s settings. Some folks who already have the latest Google phone reported that they also got the update OTA.

So what’s the buzz with this new version of the buttery smooth OS? Not a whole lot actually. In fact, reports suggest that the update is only a bug-fixer rather than being a completely different beast. And because Google has yet to comment about the said version of Android, there isn’t a lot of information to go around with.

So Nexus 4 users out there, check you device’s OS version, you might just have the newest version of Android without you even knowing about it. Oh and don’t forget to hit the comments or tip us if you do.

Samsung Korea details Jelly Bean update for Galaxy S2

The Samsung Galaxy S2, is yet to receive its much awaited Android Jelly Bean update but Samsung Korea has already released some details on what the 2011 Android flagship is going to get from the upgrade.

galaxy-i91001-s2

Listed below are the major changes after the 4.1.2 Jelly Bean software upgrade.

1. Platform upgrade from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
- improved Home screens and improved scrolling performance (thanks to Project Butter)
- Improved usability for some applications

2. Preloaded applications
- Add Help
- Add Google+
- Add +Talk
- Add Play Book
- Add Play Movie

3. Newly added/improved functions
- Add Easy mode, Block mode
- Improved Camera functions: function like Pause while recording and more
- Add Smart Stay
- New functions like Pop-up play and more
- Improved some functions & applications usability

The features mentioned above will surely put some smiles on the faces of Galaxy S2 owners. The downside though is that the update will reduce the device’s internal storage from 12GB to 11GB (probably for the 16GB version) and will consume more RAM due to a new system partition. But that’s a small price to pay, right?

Samsung didn’t give any details when they’re going to rollout the update but it’s going to be available via Kies (no OTA) once it arrives.

Ubuntu Mobile OS for smartphones announced

Ubuntu has just announced that they are entering the smartphone market with their new mobile OS – with the same UI as their tablet, desktop & TV operating systems.

It has been said that phones running Ubuntu such as the Galaxy Nexus will be available for show at CES 2013 while major manufacturers are expected to join the bandwagon later this year.

The user interface is very sleek, and the operation relies on gestures. The “welcome screen” is something very similar to the traditional lock screen, however from there you will gain access to different options through different gestures.

A swipe from the left edge brings you to your app shortcuts (with access to the homescreen on the bottom left). From the top you’ll find the unified search box. Swiping sideways will bring you to your most used information such as contacts, music and etc.

A full swipe from the left will take you straight to all your apps, while a full swipe from the right will bring you to the recently used ones. The status icons on top also has gestures.

The new mobile OS includes services such as Ubuntu One cloud syncing.

Developers are already said to be working on apps. We’re very excited to see how the new operating systems are going to do this year. That includes BlackBerry 10, Jolla and more.
