Top Smartphones in PH for shooting 4K Videos

As technology progresses, more smartphones now have the capability to shoot 4K (Ultra High Definition) videos. This could mean that in a few years’ time, UHD videos could be the standard for viewing lifelike images and could mean a better and more immersive experience for everyone.

Based on the hardware they carry, here are some of the top smartphones available in the Philippines that could be used effectively for shooting 4K videos.

Apple iPhone 6S Plus

iphone6s-plus-rosegold

Apple’s latest phablet has been equipped with a lineup of capable camera specifications headlined by the 12-megapixel rear camera that got bumped up from the previous 8MP. Protected by a sapphire crystal cover, the optics shoot 4K videos with a resolution of 3860 x 2160 at 30fps (frames per second) which pass thru the 1/3-inch sensor with an aperture that opens as wide as F2.2.

Additionally, there’s OIS (optical image stabilization) on board to keep your footage safe from unwanted handling shakes. Although users couldn’t manually tweak the camera’s settings, it could detect the best settings for the current scene and automatically adjust its parameters accordingly. Here in the Philippines, the bigger iPhone 6S Plus starts at Php37,990.

LG V10

lg-v10-review-philippines-8

LG’s V10 concentrates on giving its users freedom with their shots. Its 16-megapixel rear camera has full manual control over its 1/2.6-inch image sensor that records 4K videos at 30fps — this includes adjusting the ISO sensitivity, shutter speed, focus, and white balance depending on what would work best for your shot.

It has an aperture value of F1.8 that works great in giving depth to your subject. If you want to let the phone do the focusing, its Laser autofocus will take over and do that for you. Just like the iPhone 6S Plus, the LG V10 has been mounted with an OIS  for more flawless shots. It is up for purchase with a price tag of Php37,990.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

s6edgeplus-camera

Touting a 16-megapixel rear shooter, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ also shoots 4K (3840 x 2160 resolution) videos at 30 frames per second and sports a 1/2.6-inch sensor with F1.9 aperture. Users could also tweak some of its settings manually like focus, white balance, and ISO so that’s a good thing for those who like to have control over the scene.

What this smartphone also offers are its Continuous Autofocus and Object Tracking features that help maintain the subject of your shot focused and sharp at all times. Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ is available on store shelves for Php39,990 for the 32GB and Php44,990 for the 64GB variant, respectively.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

sony-xperia-z5-premium-philippines-9

Sony steps up the megapixel count for their optics with the introduction of its 23MP rear camera. Just like the previous contenders, it shoots up to 4K videos at 30fps. It also has Object Tracking just like the S6 Edge+ but the image stabilization is only done digitally known as the SteadyShot.

It also got some manual settings, but it won’t give you freedom like the V10. On a positive note, you can immediately view and watch your captured videos on the smartphone’s 4K resolution display and enjoy over 8 million pixels at the palm of your hand. The Xperia Z5 Premium is  available with an SRP of Php43,690 and a cash-based SRP of Php40,990.

Google Nexus 6P

nexus 6p_11

Huawei’s Nexus 6P packs a rather modest 12.3-megapixel camera, but its 1/2.3-inch sensor has a pixel size of 1.55 microns which basically translates to better performance during low light conditions.

In addition to its 4K recording capabilities at 30fps, it has an aperture opening of F2.0 that also performs well on videos and photos alike. A laser autofocus supports the 6P and shakes are minimized using an electronic image stabilization. The Google Nexus 6P is available locally for Php29,990.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL (4)

Microsoft has its own spot for this list as well as their Lumia 950 XL proved competitive during the several Camera Blind Tests that we did. It boasts a 20-megapixel rear camera and a sensor slightly bigger than the 6P’s at 1/2.4-inch. It has an F1.9 aperture that goes hand-in-hand with its built-in OIS and Continuous Autofocus to make your shots steady and on point.

Focus, exposure, and white balance could be controlled using in-app dials; and when the scene gets too dark, there’s the triple LED flash at your disposal. There’s also Video Zoom that enables you to zoom in without significantly losing details.

Lastly, audio is recorded using what the company calls Lumia Rich Recording with four microphones that aim to record and reproduce natural-sounding elements. The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL has an SRP of Php32,990.

That’s about it for the smartphones that shoot 4K videos. Do you have anything to add? Feel free to contribute in the comments section below.

6 Best-Looking Smartphones of 2015

The end of 2015 is fast approaching and just like before, we try to round up some of the best of what the year had to offer in the tech scene. For this article we compile the best-looking smartphones in terms of physique and build quality, regardless of their specs and performances.

ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe

zenfone-2-deluxe

Being the top-tier variant in the wide selection of Zenfones, the Deluxe features tessellated triangles on its back cover that show off a crystalline look. This variation in angles makes it possible for the panel to somewhat change in the shade of color depending on how the light strikes them. We’ve had it during the review and people we’ve come across couldn’t help but ask about it — definitely an eye-catcher!

BlackBerry PRIV

blackberry-priv-hero

Say what you want about BlackBerry only trying to make an attempt for a comeback but the PRIV is a looker in our book. Having its rear panel made out of a material similar to carbon fiber, it has a matte finish that repels fingerprints away — maintaining its neat composure.

Plus, its unassuming design with all black color and hints of silver make it perfect for business use — an established BlackBerry trademark. We’ve had the chance of having a hands-on experience with it and you may check out our first impressions by following the link.

Huawei Mate S

huawei-mate-s

Huawei carried out the same design from the Mate S series and incorporated some details from the Huawei P8 as well. It’s like they combined the best features of the P8 and the Mate 7 to create the Mate S, with the front looking like the P8 and the rear reminding us of the Mate 7.

It’s made up of a single, solid aluminum alloy body with downward sloping edges that make the handset appear quite thin — maxing out at 7.2mm. It has an edge-to-edge display which always appears favorable. If you look closely, you’d notice that the edges were intricately designed to have a hint of a curve just before the metal body starts. Gone are the days when secondary player devices don’t concentrate on the looks. Check out our review through the link.

LG V10

lg v10_4

LG’s current flagship device that followed the G4 is looking sharp in every angle. Starting from the very prominent back, it has a textured, silicone-based material laid out for added grip but also gives off a unique presence for onlookers when placed on a table, for example. The sides have been equipped with solid stainless steel that presents itself as sturdy pillars acting as the frame for the device.

It has a tall body but compensates for it by being really slender so it still doesn’t look bulky. Click on the link for the full review.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

Samsung-S6-edge+

Samsung is one of the first smartphones to venture into the curved display scene and with the Galaxy S6 Edge+, the South Korean giant proved that they can produce a smartphone with great performance and a killer design.

It has a 5.7-inch display that curves outward on both sides, and is encased in a premium metal chassis. This makes it look like the phone houses a floating screen once held and used. In addition, the front and back panels of the handset is reinforced by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 to protect the display from scratches and even drops. We have the full review through the link.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

xperia-z5-premium

We’ve always been a fan of the Xperia’s overall form factor. It may be boxy, but it’s evident that high-class materials were used. The same goes for the top-of-the-line Z5 Premium with its entirety covered with a reflective metal available in more than one color.

It has a unibody design that goes well with its cornered edges and although it basically looks the same as other high-end Xperias, you’d definitely know that you’re looking at the Premium when you see it from afar. We have our first impressions during our short time at its launch.

That rounds up our list for best-looking devices for this year. What are yours? Feel free to share them down at the comments section below.

Top 5 Most Expensive Smartphones in PH

During the local launch of the BlackBerry PRIV yesterday, we were a bit surprised with the introductory price that the company has announced for the Philippine market. Just like us, this probably made you wonder what the most expensive smartphones one could buy in the Philippines are, so we came up with this list showing just that.

The devices shown here have SRPs of at least Php40K and are arranged in ascending order according to their asking prices.

5. Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

xperia z5 premium_11

Starting from the most affordable of the bunch, we have the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium that touts a 5.5-inch IPS LCD screen with 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160) that equates to a jaw-dropping 806ppi. It also boasts a mirror-like body that presents itself as nothing short of premium.

Inside, you have a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 32GB of expandable storage. The Xperia Z5 Premium is locally priced at Php40,990 and you may check out our first impressions during its offical launch in the Philippines.

4. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

galaxy s6 edge plus yugatech_1

Next up is from Samsung and it is none other than the Galaxy S6 Edge+ that we reviewed a few months back. The device sports a beautiful 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display at QHD resolution and is reinforced with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 for the front and back panels.

Powering the handset is the company’s Exynos 64-bit CPU with 8 cores and a Mali T-760 running the graphics department. It’s partnered with 4GB OF LPDDR4 RAM, a 16-megapixel rear camera with OIS, and even supports Qi wireless charging. The 64GB variant is available locally for Php44,990.

3. BlackBerry PRIV

blackberry priv_1

A newcomer in the local smartphone scene, BlackBerry’s PRIV is all about securing your personal data to the fullest extent. It is also the company’s first smartphone to run on Android’s OS with a sliding QWERTY keyboard so it got its fair share of attention back when it was launched.

Specs-wise, it has 5.4 inches of QHD AMOLED display that curves outward on both sides, a Snapdragon 808 hexa-core chipset, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage that’s capable of supporting up to 2TB. It was launched yesterday with an SRP of Php45,000. Interested? We have the first impressions that you can check out.

2. Apple iPhone 6S (128GB)
