YugaTech Christmas Gadget Guide 2014: Smartphones

It’s that time of the year again. If you’re looking to give gadget gifts to people you know or maybe even just to reward yourself this Christmas, you’re in luck as we have you covered! Here are the smartphones you should get, from budget-oriented ones to the flagships!

ChristmasGuide2014-A480

Budget Oriented

If you’re on the tightest budget, the best & most affordable smartphones that you can get for their price are probably in the form of two Cherry Mobile devices but with varying operating systems – the CM Flare Lite running Android and the CM Alpha Style running Windows Phone 8.1 (Php2,699 & Php2,999 respectively). The first one runs Android and decent specs to begin with, but the Alpha Style takes it a step higher with a quad-core CPU and the smoothness of WP 8. If you wish for something with TV and a lower price tag of Php1,899 (and lower specs of course), there’s also MyPhone’s Rio Junior TV.

Asus-ZenFone-5

From here, you can now check out the Xiaomi Redmi 1S & the Asus ZenFone 5 – both phones being the cream of the crop at Php5,599 & Php6,495. We doubt you’ll want anything else, but if you do, you can easily just check out local manufacturer flagship phones running octa-core Mediatek CPUs and the like. For more than Php9,000, you can also check out the impressively made 2nd-Gen Motorola Moto G which is probably only available online.

Mid-Range

Just like with the higher class of budget oriented smartphones, this area is once again ruled by Xiaomi & Asus. The Xiaomi Mi 3 was the company’s flagship phone that launched in the Philippines for just Php10,599! It has a full HD display, a Snapdragon 800 CPU with 2GB RAM and a lot more to satisfy your needs. If you want a bigger 6-inch alternative, the Asus ZenFone 6 is around for Php11,995, but it doesn’t match the Mi 3’s specs.

mi3_10

If the person you’re giving a smartphone to wants to be around water a lot, you can take a look at Sony’s waterproof Xperia M2 Aqua which also has LTE radios for faster data. This ranges around Php12-15k depending on where you’ll buy it. If, on the other hand, getting a good Android experience with high-end specs is what’s important, you can still find a Google Nexus 5 which now runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is priced at around Php16k. Finally, if Android doesn’t suit your style, the Nokia Lumia 830 is your best bet at Php18,990.

Xiaomi’s latest flagship phone, the Mi4, is not officially available yet around the country, but some online retailers have it for around Php15-17k.

The Best Smartphones

When you’re up high in this price range, it’s a lot harder to find a bad smartphone than a good one. For people who would want to take the best underwater selfies with the best specs, there’s the HTC Desire Eye for Php22,500. If huge phones aren’t your thing, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is available online for more or less Php20k.

Then there are this year’s early flagships – the Samsung Galaxy S5, the HTC One M8, the Nokia Lumia 930 & the LG G3 – which will all cost you Php23k and above, lower if you’re lucky, depending on where you get it. All of them are equally great, having distinct features from each other. Some of these features include better speakers, water resistance, better cameras, Windows Phone, a 2K display & more. It will all now depend on your taste.

note4-gaming

And finally, there’s the Galaxy Note 4, the Xperia Z3 & the iPhone 6 / iPhone 6 Plus. The Galaxy Note 4 is the Android flagship phone to get with beastly specs from the internals & the display to the camera (plus don’t forget the size & the stylus). This will cost you around Php35k. The Xperia Z3 on the other hand is one of the most polished phones around, beating everyone else with a 20 megapixel camera and high waterproofing certifications, and will cost you Php25-30k. If you have always wanted iOS, then there’s no contest; the best time to upgrade is now with new larger iPhones. The only question now is which size – the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 or the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus? Your call, but there is a huge price difference. You can get the iPhone 6 starting at Php38k, but the latter will cost you Php5k more at Php43k.

iphone6yugatech

And if you want a BlackBerry, the Passport is at Php35,790.

That’s about it for our Christmas Guide on smartphones this year! We’ll have more up soon in the following days, so stay tuned for that. If you have any more to suggest, feel free to leave them in the comments section down below.

Sony to engage in Group-wide 4K, entertainment, network service, and CSR initiatives leading towards the 2014 FIFA World Cup

Sony Corporation , an official FIFA partner, today announced that it will further accelerate strategic initiatives that leverage the strengths of all Sony Group companies and its partnership with FIFA.

For the 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilTM which is due to begin on June 12, 2014 (local time), Sony is focusing on the areas of “4K,” “entertainment,” “network services,” and “CSR,” with key initiatives in each category outlined below.

“At Sony, we strive to empower our consumers with complete, end-to-end entertainment experiences that will complement the best of their lives – whether at home, at work, or even on-the-go,” said Yasushi Asaoka, President and Managing Director of Sony Philippines. “In line with this commitment, we are proud to bring our best-in-class technology and devices to the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2014 and ensure that fans around the world enjoy this event at its best whether at home on their Bravia, or while on-the-go with their Xperia tablets and smartphones.”

■4K

Sony is bringing its renowned, advanced technological capabilities and high value-added products to this tournament, where it will demonstrate its strengths in providing consistent solutions that span the entire 4K process — from filming and production, through to the viewing experience. In collaboration with FIFA, Sony is also seeking to expand the range of opportunities for viewers to experience 4K.

  •  Filming and joint production:

FIFA will produce the Official FIFA 4K Film, packed with highlights of the best action from the tournament. FIFA will film one match from the round of 16, one quarter-final and the final using Sony’s professional 4K recording equipment. Sony will be providing extensive technical support to FIFA, and has developed a dedicated 4K live production system to be used at the tournament.

  •  The viewing experience:

Prior to the completion of the Official Film, Sony will offer its customers the opportunity to view promotional trailers of the Official Film on Sony 4K-compatible BRAVIATM LCD TVs, featuring action from selected matches, all in stunning 4K/60P resolution. Visitors to stadiums and Official FIFA Fan Fest events in Brazil will be able to enjoy the promotional trailers of the Official Film at any one of the ten commercial display booths Sony will be setting up at these venues, while customers around the world will also be able to engage in this 4K experience at approximately 20,000 Sony showrooms and retail outlets worldwide.

In addition to 4K, Sony will also be supplying FIFA with an extensive range of HD production and broadcast equipment, including approximately 300 cameras. These will be used to film every game of the tournament for global distribution in HD.

Entertainment

Sony is also leveraging its range of entertainment assets from across the Sony Group in order to drive the excitement and passion for the tournament through music, both in Brazil and around the world.

  •  The “SuperSong” music contest:

For three months from December 2013, Sony and companies from across the Sony Group held the global “SuperSong” music contest for aspiring songwriters, featuring Ricky Martin. More than 1,600 songs were submitted, and the winning song, “Vida,” was performed by Ricky Martin himself and recorded for the 2014 FIFA World CupTM Official Album.

  •  The official tournament songs:

Sony Music Entertainment (“SME”) and FIFA announced “We Are One (Ole Ola),” the Official Song of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM, by global music sensation Pitbull, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Brazil’s Claudia Leitte. The song will be performed at the opening ceremony where it is set to further heighten the excitement of the games. (For details please refer to the joint announcement on Jan. 23, 2014.) Similarly, the closing ceremony will feature legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and fellow artists performing the official anthem “Dar um Jeito (We Will Find A Way).”

  •  The tournament Official Album:

The songs above are also included on SME’s “One Love, One Rhythm,” Official Album of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM, featuring a total of 14 songs (on the standard edition). (For details refer to the announcement on Apr. 8, 2014.) The album also features Mika Nakashima and Miliyah Kato and their “Fighter (Tachytelic World Cup Brazil 2014 Remix)”. Of the songs featured on the Official Album, music videos of “We Are One (Ole Ola)” and “Vida” can also be enjoyed in 4K at Sony showrooms and retail outlets worldwide.

Network services (digital and social)

In addition to conventional ways of enjoying football, such as watching the games at the stadium or on TV and other media networks, Sony will offer a new, interactive World Cup experience where people can join in the excitement of this tournament through various network services.

  •  The “One Stadium” Portal web site:

Sony has launched “One Stadium” (http://football.sony.net), a portal website to serve as a global hub for communication on football, that offers an array of projects and content such as access to the aforementioned “SuperSong” contest. Maximizing the possibilities offered by the online community space, Sony is aiming to bring people together across all borders, to share their passions and inspirations through projects including:

  •  The “One Stadium Live” social networking site: Sorts and offers the latest and popular football topics from Twitter etc. for easy reference.
  •  The “Fan Ambassador” reports: Fans representing 11 countries will be stationed in Brazil, ready to upload on-site action.
  • The “UNITED” photo contest: A spin-off photo contest of the world’s largest photographic contest “Sony World Photography Awards,” themed on “football” is scheduled to start the day before the tournament.
  • Further projects include interviews with artists featured on the Official Album, and collaborations with Sony’s social news reader app, “Socialife News”.

  •  Collaboration with “FIFA Interactive World Cup”:

As an official FIFA partner, Sony is also bringing new ways of enjoying football to the online gaming community through the FIFA Interactive World Cup (“FIWC”), organized by FIFA. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (“SCE”) and Electronics Arts Inc. are presenting partners of the FIWC, which is the world’s largest online gaming tournament. FIWC uses PlayStation® as its official game console, and online elimination games are played utilizing the PSN network service on PlayStation®. This tournament is the only one of its kind in FIFA’s event portfolio which gives football fans all over the world the chance to compete in a FIFA World Cup tournament. More than 2.5 million PlayStation® users worldwide participated in last year’s tournament, each competing for the honor of becoming the world champion. The FIWC 2014 has been in progress since October of last year, and the Grand Final will be held in Rio de Janeiro during the actual World Cup tournament.

■ CSR

As part of its corporate social responsibility as a global company, Sony is engaged in various efforts to support children around the world and help shape a better, more sustainable community. Leading toward the tournament, Sony is continuing these efforts through the following initiatives:

  • “Dream Goal 2014” program:

Sony is implementing the two projects below in collaboration with FIFA and streetfootballworld gGmbH to benefit children in a total of 12 countries in Central and South America, including the tournament host country Brazil, together with Africa, and other countries and regions. (For details please refer to the “Dream Goal 2014” site)

  •  “Street Football Stadium”: This project will provide mobile stadiums and educational workshops that aim to build leadership and dialogue skills through football, to more than 14,000 children. The workshops will start with those regularly scheduled to take place during a 46-day event organized by streetfootballworld in Rio de Janeiro, starting June 5th. The stadiums will continue to be used in the field of local education, even after the tournament is over.
  •  “Siyakhona Media Skills”: In partnership with FIFA, this project supports young leaders in 11 countries with media skills training programs using Sony products, while also providing them with the opportunity to share their visual message to the world.

Both projects connect communities in need of support with the global community, through designs and photographs via the “One Stadium” portal site.

  • Public Viewing:

During the tournament period, Sony will jointly host public viewing events with JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) in Ivory Coast, one of Africa’s representatives at the tournament. Sony’s equipment will be used to project football matches in hi-definition, while Sony will also be providing its own power supply system to deliver power to areas without electricity, based on its olivine-type lithium-ion iron phosphate rechargeable batteries. Sony engineers will also provide on-site technical support. (For details please refer to the joint announcement on May 28, 2014.) Video reports from this project will be uploaded to the “One Stadium” portal.

■Reference: Other activities

Sony is also supporting the “Flag Bearer” program which invites children (ages 12 to 17) to enter the stadium bearing the FIFA flag at the pre-game ceremonies, as well as the “Fan Photographer” program which provides photographers with access to a designated photo-shooting area within the stadium to photograph the players warming up before the match starts. These programs are being conducted in conjunction with other sales promotion campaigns of Sony Group companies, to provide football fans and customers with the unforgettable experience of standing on the same pitch as their heroes.

YugaTech’s Top 5 Smartphones of 2013

For the past year, we had a great time of smartphone launches, demos, reviews & more. Before we enter 2014, the YugaTech team voted upon ourselves our very own top 5 smartphones for 2013 & we combined them with our readers’ very own best smartphones poll earlier this year. So without further ado, here are the top 5 smartphones for the year.

iphone5s-review

5. Apple iPhone 5S – five for five, Apple takes the award for refreshing last year’s iPhone 5 by adding an A7 CPU, a gold color option, dual tone LED flash, slow motion video, Touch ID & more. It ranked #4 in our readers’ choice poll and it would have ranked differently here too if only we didn’t favor better phones in this list.

xperia_z1_1_1

4. Sony Xperia Z1 - up on number four, the waterproof Xperia Z1 tops with its premium build quality matched with high-end internals. The Snapdragon CPU will never cease to impress, plus Sony’s own camera is really one to marvel at. Apart from the display, there’s no reason why we can’t include the Z1 in our top smartphone list. After all, it ranked #3 in our reader poll.

2.5. DRAW: LG G2 & HTC One

Looks like we have a draw guys. Happening backstage, the HTC One was supposed to be our own choice for the top smartphone, but it didn’t rank so high on our readers’ choice poll. On the other hand, the LG G2 was supposed to be our readers’ top smartphone, but we preferred much more handsets than it. All of that made it result in a draw.

The HTC One is fast, sleek & is just drop dead gorgeous in all ways – the display is breathtaking, the BoomSound speakers are the best in the industry, the camera works well & Sense packs a very good UI paired with fast internals.

lgg2

The LG G2 on the other hand is basically a champion all around the spec sheet, from the display & the camera to sheer performance. The buttons on the back may take some time to get used to, but nonetheless it offers that certain element of uniqueness to the device.

And our best smartphone of 2013 is…

It won’t come as a surprise to most people, but our best smartphone of 2013 is none other than the Galaxy Note 3! The device packs an amazing set of internals and is for the most part a no compromise phone from the 1080p display, the large battery, the camera that’s capable of 4K video to the 3GB RAM. Not to mention, stylus functionality works very well.

That’s it for our top smartphones this 2013. If you wanted to know, somewhere out there, the Lumia 1020, the Nexus 5 & the Galaxy S4 hanged before reaching the top 5. We can only wonder how different things will be next year; it’s a long wait for sure – but stay tuned for more to come this upcoming 2014!

Technologies We Hope To Encounter This 2014

There’s no denying that 2013 was a big year in tech following evolutionary steps in mobile, console gaming, wearables & pocket photography. However, there a lot of things we didn’t get to see yet and things we’re still hoping to see. As 2013 ends, we take a peek at what we’re hoping to see in 2014.

ara_1

Customizable Smartphones in the PH

When we say customizable, we’re only pertaining to you Motorola. While it’s reported that the Moto G is coming here very soon, we hope that phones like the Moto X arrive too along with MotoMaker so we Filipinos get to have that experience. In addition, if it fits your release schedule – we’re also hoping to get a taste of Project Ara too.

Google Nexus 5

Full Google Play Support

Nexus devices, Chromecast, Chromebooks & other Google products – those things should come to local shores! The local prices of Google products in the PH have huge differences when compared to other countries, and even if you have them shipped from abroad, shipping costs & taxes will make it very expensive as well. In fact, we can’t even view some Play Store items through internet. Also, while most Filipinos aren’t going to use it just yet, it’s sad not to have access to some features like Play Movies & TV.

This is probably one of those hopes that many people have too – to see Google Play support here in the PH.

iphone 6

A larger iPhone 6

Not everyone will agree with this as some people prefer compact smartphones, but we can’t deny that the market for larger screens is getting wider; even ‘mini’ versions of Android flagship phones are bigger than the iPhone now. We think it’s only right for Apple to out at least a 4.5-inch iPhone. That isn’t too big for today’s standards, is it? If Apple can pull off the iPhone 5C, then we surely think they can pull off a bigger iPhone as well. Maybe that they can call unapologetically huge (no, that’s not what she said).

GALAXY J

A metallic Galaxy S5

Like the iPhone, love it or hate it, the Samsung Galaxy S series is one of the most successful smartphones on the planet. It played a huge part in the rise of Android and it’s now defending its place as the king of the Android hill. However, while Samsung has strengths in hardware, we can’t deny that their plastic design language is one of their key weaknesses.

We had an article earlier this year tackling the issue of Samsung’s use of glossy plastic and our best guess was it’s all for brand recognition. Now, we’re hoping that they step up their game to compete with the likes of HTC’s & Apple’s flagships – all because now we think they can pull it off; you just need to see something like the Galaxy J.

Better battery life for mobile

Only very few smartdevices can achieve two or more days of battery life, and it’s been that way for years since the invention of the smartphone! While it’s very unlikely that manufacturers will turn their attention to better batteries this 2014, we’re still highly hoping that it will happen.

Improved 4G options in the PH

It could be in the form of more multiband LTE, it could be in the form of more affordable postpaid plans, or it could be in the form of better signal, fast data speeds & flexible prepaid promos. The point is, 4G LTE has a lot to improve on at this specific time, and it’s inevitable that it will get better; it’s just that we’re wishing that our local telcos will actually deliver to this promise & not be anti-competitive.

galaxy gear_launch

A smartwatch worth buying

The Sony Smartwatches, Pebble, the Galaxy Gear & the MotoActv – these are cool new devices under a new product category that most people or even geeks aren’t willing to buy just yet. It’s probably because they’re still very useless for their prices.

This 2014, we hope to see something different: maybe something that doesn’t always need to be connected to your smartphone, something that will last long similar to your ordinary wristwatch, or something that just offers features that people really need. Maybe Apple, Google or Microsoft can start on that.

Higher internal storage, at least 64GB on smartphones

We’re seeing lesser phones with micro SD card slots every year, not to mention flash storage is becoming a norm with new technologies. With this, we think it’s time to bring in higher internal storage options on mobile devices without the much extra cost. 8GB on high-end smartphones are now extinct, 16GB variants are following. Before the end of 2014, we might finally see the standard of 64GB already.

lenovo-k900-intel

Less MediaTek, more Tegra 4 & Intel Bay Trail

We have yet to see how MediaTek’s new octa-core CPUs perform, but even so, we have to say we’re not big fans of what the company is doing – more cores doesn’t always translate to better performance. We can prove this many times with our experiences with MediaTek devices – and they can definitely do a lot better with graphics, radios & overall performance. Anyway, we don’t think we’ll see any changes with that as their aim seems to be to sell more through more cores, so we’re just going to keep our hopes up that phones would start using better CPUs even at low costs.

More cores doesn’t always translate to better performance - Intel seems to know this very well; that’s why we wish to see more of their powerful yet battery efficient chipsets the following year. Now, if you’re still that person who would prefer more CPU & GPU cores for performance, Nvidia’s Tegra 4 can definitely deliver. Sadly, we weren’t able to see much of the chipset’s computing prowess this 2013, so we’re hoping to see more of that this upcoming 2014.

More NFC appliances to pair with phones

Be it with TVs, speakers, headsets, tablets & other appliances, we think connecting each would be much more convenient with less button pressing & cables. This 2014, we hope that aside from sending files & launching applications with tags, NFC finds a way to be much more widespread in the Philippines. Starting with audio equipment & payment systems would be nice.

samsung galaxy s4 active zoom mini plus 63 2

Less ‘flagship’ phones from companies such as Samsung & Cherry Mobile

To see our point clearly, take this for an example: You just bought your Samsung Galaxy S4, the company’s flagship phone, and you feel very contented and excited. A month later, Samsung decides to release the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Zoom Mini Plus 6.3 & it features the next version of Android! News came out now that your Galaxy S4 won’t get the update. How does that make you feel?

The scenario above isn’t only a problem found with Samsung & their plethora of S4 variants; this also a problem with other manufacturers. In fact, I don’t even know what Cherry Mobile’s flagship phone is – one has the 1080p screen, one has an updated OS & 4G LTE capable ones are coming soon – how are people supposed to feel happy with that? To cut short, it would be really nice if they didn’t flood us with phones having a new and unique feature every month with a high price. That would be really nice.

What about you? What do you want to see in 2014? Do you agree with some of the things we mentioned or would prefer something else? Feel free to leave your hopes for 2014 in the comments section down below.
