Microsoft debuts OneDrive, gives 100GB free storage

Earlier today, Microsoft offered 100GB storage to the first 100,000 users who signed up for their recently launched cloud-based storage service called OneDrive.

Formerly known as SkyDrive, the software giant was forced to rebrand their service after losing a legal dispute filed by a UK-based company, Sky Broadcasting. In addition to its new name, Microsoft has also made some minor improvements on OneDrive, particularly in allocating free storage to users.

The company has patterned its business model to DropBox wherein users are rewarded with 500MB worth of extra storage on top of the default 7GB storage every time they successfully referred somebody (up to 10) to the service.

Furthermore, users will receive a free 3GB when they enable the automatic camera backup tool on their Windows Phone, iOS or Android device. If these free storage are still not enough, Microsoft is also offering top up denominations of 50GB ($25), 100GB ($50) and 200GB ($100).

Microsoft renames SkyDrive to OneDrive

Microsoft has announced that it will soon change the name of its cloud storage platform, SkyDrive, to OneDrive.

The renaming was due to a trademark issue with a British broadcasting company, BSkyB. You can read all about it here. On the bright side, this shouldn’t cause any problems since it’s just the service’s name that Microsoft is changing.

“Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more.” said Microsoft in a blog post.

Current users of either SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro shouldn’t worry as the service will continue to operate and all of the user’s content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business once the new name rolls out.
