New NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 for $199.99

NVIDIA’s gaming tablet line welcomes a new member with a Tegra K1 chipset and a $199 price tag.

The NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 sports an 8-inch IPS (1920×1200 pixels) display and is powered by NVIDIA Tegra K1 running a 2.2GHz Cortex-A15 CPU and a 192-core GeForce Kepler GPU. It is paired with an ample 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

Unlike its predecessor, the Shield Tablet that went on sale for $299, the slot for the stylus has been omitted and is available for separate purchase. Also, the new Shield Tablet does not include a charger or an adapter which is part of the measure to lower the price.

NVIDIA recalls SHIELD tablets for potential fire hazard

NVIDIA announces that it is officially recalling its 8-inch SHIELD tablets for a potential fire hazard due to overheating batteries.

If you got your SHIELD gaming tablet between July 2014 and July 2015, the company asks that you stop using the affected devices immediately, “except as needed to participate in the recall and back up data.”

To make sure that your device is a part of the recall, you may check NVIDIA’s website where it directs you to follow a series of instructions to determine what kind of battery the tablet is using. The affected batteries will reportedly be replaced by the company for free.
