GS4-Active_008

It packs similar internals as the Samsung Galaxy S4, from the 1.9GHz quad-core CPU to the 2,600mAh battery. In addition, it can be submerged in water for a maximum of 30 minutes as the headphone jack is also water-resistant.

The camera is a lesser 8-megapixel sensor, and an Aqua Mode is added to its list of camera shooting modes. Not to mention, the Super AMOLED display is now gone, replaced by a TFT LCD of the same resolution.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active specs:
5.0-inch TFT LCD @ 1920x1080p, 443ppi
1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU
Adreno 320
2GB RAM

With a few changes in specs and design (all physical buttons), we think it definitely takes the Samsung flagship a step forward.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus to retail for $649 on June 26

Google is re-introduing the Samsung Galaxy S4 and will package it as Nexus-like variant running on vanilla Android OS. That means there is no TouchWiz, just plain stock Android UI. This confirms our earlier report of the Galaxy S4 Google Edition.

On the short side of things, that also means less features (or gimmicks, depending on how you view it). No gestures, eye-tracking, camera add-ons and all of Samsung’s wiz.

However, if you’re not into S-Health & all of Samsung’s extra software, you should definitely consider it. After all, on the plus side, you will get fast version updates and more memory since there is no extra Samsung software.

4.99-inch display full HD Super AMOLED @ 1920x1080p, 441ppi
Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 1.9GHz quad-core

Samsung Galaxy S4: faster and more powerful!

So you’ve heard the news: the Samsung Galaxy S4 has landed and is now being offered in the postpaid plans of the leading telcos, Globe & Smart. It makes me wonder whether an S5 or S6 is in the works. And for those like me who wonder about the difference between the S4 and the S3, read more towards the end of this post.

Anyhow, here’s a photo collage of the Samsung Galaxy S4 launched we attended in Bonifacio Global City a couple of weeks ago. The S4 is an eye candy and the must-have smartphone of the summer season so naturally, Manila’s beautiful people were there during the event.

Samsung Galaxy S4 launch

Here’s the phone’s close-up.It comes in the two basic colors now: Black Mist & White Frost. But there should be additional color options during the latter part of the year.

Samsung Galaxy S4

What’s easily noticed is the larger screen size which makes texts and images really come to life on the Full HD Super AMOLED display. In fact, some people are now saying that with the 5-inch screen size of the S4 (just a tad smaller than the Galaxy Note 2 at 5.5″), the S4 can be very well called a phablet (phone + tablet), thereby making it a real multi-tasking device for people who lead busy lifestyles.

So what will make you upgrade and switch to this phone? It is simply faster and more powerful. If you’re already an S3 user, for instance, processor speed is at a whopping 1.9 GHz quad core, the Android version is higher at Jelly Bean 4.2.2(from 4.1), battery capacity is stronger at 2,600 aMH, and there is an increase in rear camera quality from 8 mp to a stunning 13 megapixels! I would love to have this phone if only because I don’t need to bring my point and shoot anymore :)

Despite being power-packed, the S4 is also lighter than the S3 (130 grams as against the 133 g of old).

Suggested retail price of the phone as of its release date in the Philippines is P30,990

Poll: HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4?

Samsung and HTC have been very competitive with each other for the past years. HTC was like the king of Android back in the beginning with phones like the Nexus One & the Desire line, while Samsung is the successful challenger since they have managed to outgrow HTC in sales and volume through the highly popular Galaxy line.

HTC ONE SGS4

The battle has always been a close one, from the Galaxy S2 and the Sensation, to the Galaxy S3 and the One X. HTC might have found its refuge with the One but in order to win the market it will have to go against the other beast – the Galaxy S4.

The Galaxy S4 has been launched and priced already, with postpaid plans from our local telcos already available. On the other hand, HTC has been facing delays with its shipments and launches, reported to be caused by shortages in UltraPixel components.

But enough of that. Our review of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is out, and we have yet to look at the HTC One in full detail after it gets released in the 3rd week of May. Also, the price tags are already available; the Galaxy S4 will be at Php30,990 while the HTC One will retail for Php32,990.

NEW COMPARISON

Note: The Exynos Octa variant is also available through a higher gray market price.

So, we’d like to know. Will you go for the all-aluminum, UltraPixel-packing, BoomSound-carrying HTC One? Or the feature-packed heavy-spec’d plastic Samsung Galaxy S4? Let us know in the comments below.
