128GB may be a common high of internal storage only seen on flagships nowadays, and Samsung wants to change that with the announcement of their new 128GB eMMC 5.0 chips based on 3-bit NAND technology.
According to Samsung, the new high-performance 128GB eMMC 5.0 chips deliver 260 megabytes per second (MB/s) for sequential data reading, which is equal to the level of performance as that of MLC NAND-based eMMC 5.1 memory.
It can also handle up to 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 5,000 IOPS for random read and write operations, touted to be 4 and 10 times faster, respectively, than that of a regular memory card. This new speed enables sufficiency for supporting high definition video processing and advanced multi-tasking features onboard.
Samsung aims that with this move, more mid-range smartphones can also get a taste of what it’s like to bear a huge internal storage capacity normally seen only on flagship devices. Shall we see more affordable devices sporting 128GB of storage onboard? Only time can tell.
