PlayStation VR is the official name of Project Morpheus

Sony has announced PlayStation VR – the official name of its virtual reality technology first introduced as Project Morpheus.

To give you quick background, Project Morpheus was first unveiled in March 2014 as Sony’s virtual reality headset designed to be used with the PS4. It features a 5.7-inch Full HD resolution OLED display, 90-degree field of view, 120hz refresh rate, low latency of less than 18ms, 3D Audio Technology, and motion sensors.

“The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience,” said Masayasu Ito, EVP, Division president of PS Product Business and VP, Software Design Division.

Sony says that they will continue to refine the PlayStation VR’s hardware while working alongside 3rd party developers and publishers for content.

The PlayStation VR is slated to launch in the first half of 2016.

Project Morpheus VR arriving early 2016

Recent reports suggest that Sony‘s virtual reality headset Project Morpheus is coming early next year.

According to The Verge’s report from Wired, there were no exact price mentioned but it would be up for purchase for “several hundred dollars” in the first half of 2016. The company will also showcase about 20 VR samples during E3’s upcoming presentation.

In addition, the team told the sources that they’re trying to be diverse with the kind of gameplay one could experience on Project Morpheus. Some of these include:

  • First-person shooters
  • First-person exploration
  • Puzzle games
  • Relaxation games
  • Networked games
  • Games on 3D environment

Sony unveils Project Morpheus, VR headset for PS4

It has been long rumored that Sony is working on a Virtual Reality headset. Today though, all of those speculations were laid to rest as the company introduced the Project Morpheus at this year’s Game Developer Conference.

The Project Morpheus has an LCD panel with 1080p resolution and gives a 90-degree field of view. Furthermore, it’s equipped with a pair of motion sensors (Accelerometer and Gyroscope) which plays nicely with the PlayStation 4’s camera.

Now in terms of sound, Sony touts that Project Morpheus is endowed with 3D Audio Technology which, in conjunction with its Gyroscope, allows the device to provide a “stereoscopic sound in all directions”.

Sony has not announced when Project Morpheus will makes its official debut. In the meantime, the Japanese firm will make the device’s SDK available to developers to encourage them to integrate Project Morpheus in to their upcoming game titles.
