Cherry Mobile Alpha Neon Quick Review

Internationally announced at MWC in Barcelona last March, Cherry Mobile‘s Alpha Neon is a Windows-powered phone that packs modest specs. It came back-to-back with the Alpha View and are priced similarly. Check out what it could offer for both old and new Windows users in this quick review.

Design and Construction

The Alpha Neon touts a 5-inch IPS display on a 720p resolution screen. It’s also got 294ppi which is just the right pixel density for a display this size and resolution.

The power and lock button are found on the right strip at the upper part of the device, which is easily reachable whether you’re a lefty or a righty.

Connectivity ports are found up top. Here we have the audio jack and microUSB port just above the speaker for calls and front-facing camera.

The entire form factor uses cornered edges in some areas and smooth in others. This, in turn, feels ergonomically sound to hold.

A closer look at its display panel shows that it is embossed from the body.

The Alpha Neon employs the usual three capacitive buttons: There is the Back, Home, and Search. Previous Windows Phone owners should have no problems navigating through its UI.

Its rear camera is placed right smack in the middle of the upper back panel and is accompanied by a single LED flash.

The speaker grille is found down below. After playing some video clips we noticed that they are physically weak, so you’re better off using headphones to better enjoy what you watch or listen to.

The back cover is removable which will introduce you to the SIM card trays and microSD card slot. We’re also glad to report that its 2000mAh battery is removable. This makes it possible to buy an additional battery pack in case you experience a problem with the current one, or you could have it as spare when you’re on-the-go.

Physically, the Alpha Neon is a narrow device which made it a bit tall for one-handed usage. We felt more comfortable using both hands to operate it.

Camera

Sample image taken indoors on a semi-low light condition.

Carrying an 8-megapixel rear shooter, the Alpha Neon takes decent images even in low light situations. With the sample image above, digital noise is present yet it was still able to capture good details. In this aspect we didn’t have any major complains, although it did take some time for the camera to focus on its subjects.

Here are a few more shots taken with its rear camera:

Performance and Benchmarks

Typing on the handset felt like the letters were too squeezed together, yet it was oddly a comfortable experience. The only issue was that we tend to press the wrong letters when we typed the above sentences in normal speed.

The device runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor with four cores clocked at 1.2 GHz. Browsing through its Windows OS, things were snappy and responsive. In fact, we didn’t experience any noticeable lags during our time with it. Despite its not-so-beefed-up CPU and 1GB RAM, it was able to take on casual tasks with a breeze.

  • AnTuTu: 11,489
  • Basemark OS II: 406

Battery

We tested its battery life by looping an HD video on Airplane Mode, Medium brightness, 50% volume, and battery-saver turned off. This resulted to 5 hours and 23 minutes of continuous playback.

Conclusion

The Alpha Neon feels like a premium Windows phone in terms of hardware. Although we had some minor problems with how its touchscreen perceived our touch input, the overall feel of the device didn’t feel cheap. Browsing experience was also snappy — its Windows 8.1 OS was responsive and we didn’t come across any major hiccups despite its modest internals.

Its 2,000mAh battery lasted over 5 hours, with power-saver turned off so there’s still a possibility of stretching that out. Camera quality was also decent, even shooting at dimly-lit places. Lastly, it carries an affordable price tag of Php3,999 which won’t break the bank for those looking for a Windows-powered daily driver.

Cherry Mobile Alpha Neon specs:
5-inch HD IPS display, 294ppi
1.2GHz Qualcomm Snadpragon 200 quad-core CPU
Adreno 302 GPU
1GB RAM
8GB internal storage

LG PH teases local availability of mid-range Magna

LG Philippines over its Facebook page gives a quick teaser of the arrival of one of the four mid-range phones announced back in February. The LG Magna promises a not-so-steep price tag while having decent specs and performance.

lg-magna

LG Magna specs:
5.0-inch HD display @ 1280 x 720 resolution, 294ppi
1.3GHz Quad-Core CPU (3G)
1.2GHz Quad-Core CPU (LTE)

5MP front camera
LTE Cat. 4
HSPA+ 21Mbps
2,540mAh removable battery
Android 5.0 Lollipop
139.7 x 69.9 x 10.2mm

A photo of the LG Magna was uploaded with the caption, “Curved phones are finally here in the Philippines!”. For those unfamiliar, it boasts a curved back for better handling and a wide-angle front camera to accommodate more people during a group selfie.

The handset is also loaded with features like Glance View, Gesture Shot, and Touch & Shoot, but as we’ve mentioned earlier its most attractive characteristic is a midrange price that should justify the kind of performance its users will be getting.

Interested in this upcoming handset? If the units are already here in the Philippines then it’s only a matter of time until they make it available. Stay tuned as we’ll be keeping tabs on its local announcement.

Waze app: how to use your phone to outsmart Cebu traffic

“IN 200 meters,” the Waze app on the phone said, “turn right.”

We were headed to Marco Polo Plaza Cebu and were near the Banilad flyover on our way to the IT Park when Waze, the driving application I was running on my phone, gave the direction to turn right.

Waze had determined, by going through its database of roads in Cebu and reports of traffic conditions sent in by users, that the quickest route for us was to go to that neighborhood behind Gaisano Country Mall, pass through Camp Lapu-Lapu and a small side road and emerge on our way up to the hotel.

But I’ve never passed that neighborhood behind Gaisano Country Mall for years and didn’t know whether we could find our way out of it or even whether we could get in Camp Lapu-Lapu, which is a military facility.

Waze app GPS navigation

Although the Waze app had brought us quickly to where we were, 200 meters before Gaisano Country Mall, I had a mind to ignore the device and follow the route I’d normally take, which is to go straight Gov. M. Cuenco Ave. and then turn right to Jose Maria del Mar St. to enter IT Park.

Waze app uses GPS, traffic reports from users

EASY TO USE. The Waze mobile app is easy to use to navigate streets and submit traffic and road incident reports.

But I decided to follow Waze’s advice, I’m testing it for a column piece anyway, I told myself. Corner by corner, the app navigated us, via voice cues, through the neighborhood near Camp Lapu-Lapu, right through the camp itself and out near JY Square.

And, as Waze had done so for weeks that I’ve been using it, we cut travel time by several minutes.

Waze, for the unfamiliar, is an application that you install into your Android or iOS device to help you navigate traffic. It uses GPS or global positioning system to track where you are, where you want to go and how you can go there fast.

It does this by getting route and driving data from the devices of its users and receiving reports from them. Users can report traffic jams and their severity, accidents, hazards and even police.

The system was founded in Israel and became very popular all over the world that Google bought it for $1.03 billion. The traffic reports are now starting to be integrated in Google Maps.

Easy to use

If you drive, Waze is an app that you should install. It’s for free. But for it to work, you need to turn on our phone’s GPS or location service and have a working mobile data connection.

Waze app GPS route

FASTEST ROUTE. Waze gives you suggested routes to where you are headed and offers the fastest way to get there, taking into account traffic conditions.

Using it is very straightforward. To go somewhere, you just choose navigate and search for the location of the place you are headed to. To simplify regular commute, it allows you to save locations you frequent like work, home etc. Reporting traffic situations is also easy, provided you have good mobile Internet connection.

The Waze app, being free and easy to deploy, is a great solution to dealing with traffic in an area like Cebu. Closed circuit cameras, which the City is deploying albeit not only for traffic but also to monitor crime, can only do so much and aren’t as useful on the phone.

It would help our situation if more people would use apps like Waze and if government can help improve the system by populating it with field reports from enforcers.

The City already has a traffic reporting system via a system built on Android phones deployed on select taxicabs. By running the Waze app in them and encouraging drivers to send reports, other commuters will be able to take advantage of that rich traffic data.
