Slow Cooking Made Fast And Efficient

With today’s busy schedules, it’s no wonder that ready-to-eat canned food, frozen dinners, and fast food takeout have largely replaced traditional home-cooked diets. Modern urban living has become easily manageable thanks to these food options, but this convenience does come at a heavy price.

Many types of processed food are made with substantial amounts of salt, sugar, and fat—ingredients that contribute to obesity when consumed in excess. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the Philippines is among the list of developing countries with high rates of obesity.

A return to ‘slow cooking’ or preparing home-cooked meals with a healthier choice of ingredients has long been advocated in the fight against unhealthy eating habits. But given the hustle and bustle of everyday life, homemakers may not have the luxury to prepare nutritious meals for their families. This is why Philips has come up with an induction cooker designed to promote healthy eating while bringing efficiency to the kitchen.

“Good health shouldn’t be impossible to achieve despite the fast-paced lifestyles we have today. Philips wants to help consumers overcome the everyday challenges that prevent them from taking charge of their lives,” says RJ Buenaventura, Philips’ General Manager for Personal Health. “Preparing healthy home-cooked meals can be made less time-consuming with appliances that make the kitchen more efficient.”

Philips’ 2100W high-power induction cooker shortens cooking time by about a third compared with what other cookers can do. This helps seal nutrition better into the food while reducing the time spent in the kitchen. Other features include a user-friendly touch control panel, six power levels for different cooking needs, as well as five healthy menus that come with their own unique heating programs. It’s also a much safer alternative to conventional gas cookers in homes, including condos.

“Many consumers have poor eating habits because of a number of factors like stress, poor time management, and not knowing what to eat. If there’s a way to make it easier to learn about and prepare healthier meals at home, it can make it easier for them to change their lifestyles for the better,” says Reah Ronsayro, Philips’ Business Development Manager for kitchen appliances. “Philips’ induction cooker has been designed with these challenges in mind. Not only does it provide healthy menus, but it also reduces the time it takes to cook healthy dishes.”

As the world’s no. 1 home cooking and food preparation appliance brand, Philips is currently offering the Induction Cooker as part of its Big Switch kitchen appliance upgrade at True Value. Get 40 percent off by exchanging your used or unused gas or electric stove (either one- or two-burner) or induction cooker of any brand.

Fire prevention starts in your kitchen

Is something burning in the kitchen? According to the National Statistics Board, 25.9 percent of fire incidents nationwide from 2010 to 2013 were caused by unattended open flame.

“As March is recognized as Fire Prevention Month, it is the perfect time for homeowners to fireproof the most delicious room in the house—the kitchen,” says RJ Buenaventura, Philips General Manager for Consumer Lifestyle.

The kitchen is one of the biggest fire hazards inside the house, making it a top priority in terms of home safety. Last year alone, more than 150,000 of home fires were said to have started inside the kitchen.

But with simple easy-to-do tips, RJ says you can make a big difference in creating a safer home for you to live, work, play, and cook in.

“Neglect is the primary cause of kitchen accidents,” says JC Gallegos, Business Development Manager for Philips Kitchen Appliances. “Keep your attention on what you are cooking and try to avoid leaving it unattended.”

Unattended cooking—particularly open flame—causes more injuries, deaths, and property damage than all other causes of home fires.

Where you place your fire extinguisher is very important. Fire safety hazards recommend storing it 10 feet away from the stove, preferably in a place near the kitchen exit.

Its weight should also be considered. Make sure that everyone in the family can lift the fire extinguisher and knows how to use it.

Good housekeeping plays a big role in ensuring kitchen safety. Dispose rubbish, paper, and other flammable materials properly. Also, try to avoid storing items near or on the stovetop. Since these surfaces generate a lot of heat, it can quickly start fires from wrappings and product packages.

If open flame is the root of kitchen fires, why not entirely take it out of the equation?

“Flameless cooking solutions, like induction cookers, can fire up your meals without the flame,” shares Gallegos. “They definitely add an extra layer of protection for your home and are safer to use as well.”

The Philips Induction Cooker offers superior, flameless cooking appliance. It also cuts cooking by 1/3 and better seals in the nutrients of food, making it a perfect partner for health aficionados. What’s more, it comes with a host of smart features that allow for effortless cooking.

After you’re done using the kitchen, be sure to pull out all the electrical appliances you used.

Buenaventura adds, “Diligence plays a big role in minimizing fire hazards. Making sure that appliances are powered down does not only ensure the safety of your home, it’s also a basic principle in energy savings.”

He closes, “From practicing the right kitchen habits to investing in fireproof cooking partners, there are a lot of simple ways to keep a bird’s eye view of your home and your family’s safety.”

It’s all in the hair!

Philips has always believed in helping women look and feel their best every day. More than just aiding Filipinas achieve this; the brand also understands the importance of doing this in a healthy, damage-free way.

With this commitment, Philips offers a collection of hair care products designed to complement any girl’s beauty regimen. These tools do not only deliver style, they also help maintain healthier hair.

“Every woman wants to look their best every day,” says Pia Umayam, Business Development Manager for Philips Consumer Lifestyle. “The challenge or feedback we get with styling hair, however, is that it can be time-consuming and even damaging.”

To simplify the task of getting beautiful hair everyday, Philips partnered with renowned hair stylist Ara Fernando to come up with easy-to-do hairstyles perfect for the modern Filipina lifestyle.

Style basics

According to Ara, “Once hair is damaged, it can be rather difficult to bring it back to its healthy state. To avoid this, you need to dry your hair before styling it.”

This first step is to create a nice base for your hairstyle by blow drying sections. With the Philips hair dryer, this can be quickly achieved using its multiple speed and temperature settings.

Ara shares, “What I like most about the Philips hairdryer is its ThermoProtect feature, which ensures the best and safest drying temperature for hair. It even offers Ionic conditioning that smoothens your locks to increase shine.”

Long and classic

For long hair, Ara suggests a soft wavy look that’s easy to pull off. After drying the hair, section it again and use the Philips Airstyler to wrap portions of the hair you want to style.

To add more flair, pin one side of the hair behind one ear and sweep it to the other side.

She shares, “I love the Airstyler because its Thermobrush has the perfect diameter for creating smooth and natural-looking styles and waves. It also has four attachments for different styles with advanced EHD technology that evenly distributes heat across the hair.”

Medium-length flair

Medium-length hair can sometimes be challenging to style—either it’s too short for typical hairstyles or too long for short and trendy hairdos.

“My advice? Go for classic, straight hair. It’s simple and timeless. Plus you only need one styling tool to pull it off,” says Ara.

With the Philips Care & Control straightener, you can easily create this look. It comes with digital settings that easily adjust heat to deliver smooth and straight hair. As it introduces charged negative ions to hair to eliminate static, it delivers twice the straightening and caring power.

Short and sweet

Who said shorthaired girls can rock curls? Ara says “short curly styled hair is made easy by the Philips Conical Curler.”

This hair care partner also has the innovative digital setting that lets you choose the temperature (130 – 200°C) and the curling time (5, 8, or 10 seconds) ideal for your hair.

Ara continues, “My favorite is its unique indicator that lets you know when your curl is ready. This is very useful especially for those who are unfamiliar of the allowed length of time that hair can be exposed to heat.”

One can achieve this look by sectioning the hair and wrapping the portion you want to curl around its cone. This can also be formed into an updo by shaping the hair and teasing the crown a little before pinning it.

Healthy, fabulous hair for everyone

When it comes to hair, Philips believes that style shouldn’t compromise health.

In line with this, the brand is offering a beauty promo entitling everyone to receive a copy of the Philips Haircare StyleGuide for a minimum purchase of P1999-worth of Philips haircare products. The guide also comes with budget-friendly discount coupons.

Pia concludes, “Beauty is inspiring. And we want Filipinas to be able to look and feel beautiful all the time. At the end of the day, it’s always about YOU, and Philips is dedicated to help through its meaningful innovations.”

Philips showcases Technology & Innovation from Netherlands

Our week-long trip to the Netherlands brought us to the homeland of Philips and showed us the roots of Dutch technology and innovation.

In what used to be a small town of Eindhoven, the place has been transformed into a huge and beautiful industrial city many of which (actually in the thousands) are long-time employees of Philips.

evoluon
The Evoluon is a conference centre and former science museum erected by the electronics and electrical company Philips in Eindhoven, Netherlands in 1966.

Philips CEO Frans van Houten, in his keynote speech here at the Evoluon Center, talked about the many innovations of Philips since it was founded here in Eindhoven in 1891.

Philips is taking bold steps to meet these needs. Last week, we made the historic announcement that Philips is going to transform into two strong and focused companies: one focused on the HealthTech opportunity, the other on Lighting solutions. This is the next logical step on our journey. It will position both companies for long-term market leadership, enabling them to innovate and address customer needs even better and faster. – Frans van Houten, CEO, Philips

Today, Philips is very strong in various areas such as lighting, health care, and consumer lifestyle (although it has been announced earlier that they will independently run the lighting division soon).

Perhaps the most visible Philips products is the consumer electronics and lighting category, while some of it were already sold to various companies (like the TV which is no longer operated by Philips but still uses the Philips brand).

Aside from the Philips Hue which we’ve been interested in getting since last year, various lighting systems and technologies have been developed by Philips were showcased here.

Philips has demonstrated that there’s a unique opportunity to use lights in providing data and location based services. In the demo (photo above), they create a small grocery store where the lights are used to transmit location data to the smartphone (via the front-facing camera) in order for an app to accurately locate the customer within the store. This allows the store to provide in-store promos and deals to a specific costumer when they are near a certain stall or aisle.

This home lighting setup uses LED bulbs (Philips Hue) that is configured to change colors depending on designated signals for the hearing-impaired. The lamps would turn green if there’s an SMS notification or a red if there’s a phone call. That’s just some of the basic visual setup that can be done with the lights.

At the same time, this Philips Smart Air Purifier (first shown in IFA 2013 in Berlin) can remove contaminants (including second-hand smoke residue) from the air that can affect allergy sufferers and asthmatics. It has a built-in WiFi so you can control it remotely with an app.

Who could have though that Blue light can help ease body pain? Philips has several of them that uses a specific blue light to help relieve pain. The light has been studied to help in blood flow and circulation allowing for better pain management.

These are some of the many new technologies and innovations that the Dutch company introduced. Gave us a better appreciation of technology and how it is used to save lives and make it better.
