Oppo R7s officially announced in Dubai

Oppo unveiled their newest smartphone in Dubai. It’s a phablet with an AMOLED screen and a 2.5D curved glass

OppoR7s

The Oppo R7s features a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display topped by a 2.5D curved glass. Under its hood is a Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor along with a Adreno 405 GPU plus 4GB of RAM. Its internal storage is 32GB and can expand via microSD card up to 128GB.

Camera-wise, it has a 13-megapixel rear shooter with Phase Detection Auto-focus, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. A 3,070mAh battery powers it up with VOOC rapid charging support. It boots Android 5.1 Lollipop skinned with Oppo’s own ColorOS 2.1.

It will be available this November in Asia, Middle East, and North Africa. U.S. and Europe can purchase the R7s through the OppoStyle website starting December. Pricing is yet to be announced.

OPPO R7 Plus Review

Locally launched just last week, the OPPO R7 Plus is obviously the bigger brother to the R7 Lite and packs rather heavy internals. With an edge-to-edge AMOLED display, Snapdragon octa-core CPU, and 4,100mAh of battery, how would this midrange phablet fare for daily use? Read on and find out.

We have a video version of this review that shows the R7 Plus up close. It shows more of the device like its display quality as well as the responsiveness of the UI.

Design and Construction

The OPPO R7 Plus has a large display spanning 6 inches across. Three on-screen buttons are implemented here, which is good news since they all light up. From this angle, the handset slightly resembles an HTC device due to the borders above and below the screen.

Up top we have the 8-megapixel front-facing camera along with the notification light and speaker for calls. You can see that bezels around the display are thin enough to try and make the images seem to pop out more.

Volume rocker is placed on the left strip and on the upper half of the device. This makes it easy and comfortable to reach even when operating the phone with one hand.

On the other side, we have the tray that accommodates dual-SIM cards and the main Power/lock screen button that goes along with it. One odd implementation here is that you can opt to use the second SIM slot as expandable storage using microSD card. It could support up to 128GB but you lose the dual-SIM functionality.

We have the 3.5mm audio jack at the top for connecting audio devices.

Down under, a microUSB port for charging and transferring files sits alone at the center.

The back features an all-metal build and exudes premium quality on the first glance and more so when held.

Situated right smack in the middle are the 13MP rear camera, dual-LED flash, laser autofocus, and the fingerprint sensor accented with chrome trimmings. Lastly, the company’s logo sits proudly below all these.

At 7.8mm, the R7 Plus is thin enough to be held securely, although it’s a bit hefty at 192 grams. This could both be a good and a bad thing depending on the user. For me, I personally prefer having a bit of chunk on my phone so it won’t be too light to escape my hands during handling.

Its form factor has been carefully crafted and implements rounded edges rather than cornered ones. This is very much appreciated since it not only makes the device pleasing to the eyes but also feels nice to hold as a whole.

Although due to its large physique, it takes a lot of effort to operate it using one hand (and I already have bigger than average hands). This made us resort to using both hands while using it.

Display and Multimedia

oppo-r7-plus-review-philippines-1

The R7 Plus boasts an edge-to-edge AMOLED screen spanning 6 inches across. A Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution then fills the entire display which results to a healthy 367ppi count. Protecting all that and layered on top is Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 to make sure the screen is protected from scratches and minor shocks.

oppo-r7-plus-review-philippines-5

Images, text, and colors are very vibrant and lively on this display — which is pretty close to the overall look of the Galaxy flagships. Blacks were truly blacks and that matters a lot when you’re watching movies. Speaking of movies, it was quite enjoyable to play videos on its spacious 6-inch screen.

oppo-r7-plus-review-philippines-6

What we noticed, though, was that its screen was too glossy that a simple glare would reflect too much light that you no longer see the content of the display.

oppo-r7-plus-review-philippines-8

The speaker, although not sizeable, provides impressive volume with good details on the lows. This has not been the case for most midrange smartphones and we usually just hear decent mids and highs, but the R7 Plus gave off a decent mixture of sound after playing a number of tracks.

Lenovo Phab Plus Hands-on

Back in the days when 4-inch smartphones were abundant, the term “phablet” is used to coin a smartphone with a screen size that’s larger than five inches. But as 5-inch displays become the norm, the term is almost exclusively reserved for really ginormous handsets like the recently-launched Lenovo Phab Plus that sports a 6.8-inch panel.

Although its specs sheet alone should already convince anyone that it is indeed a humongous device, holding the Lenovo Phab Plus for the first time is still a surreal experience. It changes whatever perception you had about phablets and from there you’ll either be awed with the sheer size of its display or find it absurd for a smartphone to have such a huge screen.

Whatever impression it left, the Lenovo Phab Plus is truly a sight to behold. Its 6.8-inch, 1080p panel is almost the only thing you’ll see on the front of the device with a just tiny room at the top for the earpiece, sensor and secondary camera.

There were some undeniable semblance to the iPhone 6 Plus’ design can be found on the Phab Plus. This include the unibody design with rounded corners, the flat back panel complete gray pinstripes that run across bottom section of the handset and along the side of the top panel, as well as the design of the microUSB port.

Phab Plus

Despite the similarities, the Phab Plus is far from being an iPhone 6 Plus knock off. Perhaps the most striking design feature of the former is the top-mounted speakers on its back side. Apart from providing very decent audio output, the loudspeaker also serves as an accent to the otherwise all-metal smartphone.

Also found in this section is the Phab Plus’ 13-megapixel rear camera along with its dual-LED flash unit near the left corner of the device.

Around the edges of the device, you’ll find the usual set of components which include the three physical buttons on the right side for power and volume adjustments, microUSB at the lip and audio jack at the top.

Lenovo Phab PLus Philippines

As is expected from such a big smartphone, one-hand operation can be quite a chore, unless of course you’re Shaq or someone with similarly-sized mitts. Even the most mundane task of reaching for the power button or adjusting the volume can be quite challenging without holding the phone with both hands.

These are just some of the tradeoffs, but in return you get a spacious 6.8-inch IPS display with full-HD resolution that equates to a respectable pixel density of 323ppi.

Lenovo PHAB Plus specs:
6.8-inch Full HD IPS display, 1920 x 1080 @326ppi
64-bit 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core CPU
2GB RAM
32GB internal storage
up to 64GB via microSD
13MP rear camera w/ dual-tone LED flash
5MP front camera
Dual SIM (micro + nano)
4G LTE, 3G
WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS
1.0 cc Sound Chamber, Dolby ATMOS
Android 5.0 Lollipop w/ VIBE UI
3,500mAh battery
Unibody metal
Dimension: 186.6 x 96.6 x 7.6 mm
Weight: 229 g

There’s no getting around the simple fact that the Lenovo Phab Plus’ greatest attribute is its display. Sure, the specifications meet the standard of what we consider as a mid-range smartphone nowadays, but at the end of the day it’ll still boil down to whether or not you’re comfortable to use such a big handset that won’t fit your side pocket.

The Lenovo Phab Plus can be had for Php14,999 and is exclusively available in all AllPhones outlets nationwide. It will also be available under Globe Tattoo Plan 999 with a Php9,000 cash-out and under MyLifestyle Plan 999 with a Php3,500 cash-out.
