Megan Young proclaimed Miss World… a first for the Philippines!

Is the Philippines going the way of Venezuela for having the most world beauty queens? Yay!

We have just received the news that Megan Lynne Young of Olongapo City, the Philippine candidate to the Miss World beauty pageant in Bali Indonesia, has been proclaimed Miss World 2013. The title has been elusive for the Philippines for so long. While Filipinas won in other prestigious pageants like Miss Universe, this is the first time that a Philippine bet has been bestowed the Miss World title.

Here are snippets of the Miss World 2013 live telecast leading up to the winner announcement of Megan as the new Miss World. The pageant was held at the Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali, Indonesia.

She follows the lead of Mutya Johanna Datul who was named Miss Supranational 2013 in Minsk, Belarus, an Eastern European country.

Megan Young sealed her win when asked the question “Why should you be Miss World? ” in the finals. She answered: ” I treasure a core value of humanity and that guides people why they act the way they do. I will use this to show other people how they can understand each other. … as one, we can help society”

The 23 year-old Megan is an actress in the Philippines and was studying Digital Film Making at the De La Salle University College of St. Benilde. She stands 5 feet 8 inches.

Last night, we got to see Miss Supranational 2013 Mutya Datul at the Miss Casino Filipino 2013 grand pageant. She showed off the perfect smile and impeccable form that made her win the world beauty title crown in Belarus. All this time, I’ve been wondering what supranational means and where Belarus is. Supranational, in simple terms, means “beyond borders” and Belarus is somewhere in Eastern Europe….so there!

Mutya was with a lone assistant who was carrying this round-shaped LV Damier bag.

Turns out the bag was part of Mutya’s prize from the organizers, along with the $25,000. And inside the bag was her glittering crown.

Also seen was another international beauty title holder, the first Filipina to be proclaimed Miss Earth (2008) – Karla Henry.

I swear she looks better in person than in the pictures, maybe because her features register somewhat strongly for the camera.

Miss Casino Filipino 2013 is Ladylyn Riva (middle) who looks a bit like 1979 Bb. Pilipinas Universe Dang Cecilio. After doing the paparazzi thing on Heart & Chiz, I realized that I was there to enjoy the Technomarine party, even though this stuff is really not my thing anymore. Surprisingly, I liked the music of current hits played by DJ Nina who also smiled at me from her booth…too bad I wasn’t able to take her picture. The crowd was hot, drinks were on the house and it was one helluva party. Congrats @TechnoMarinePH #itstime

The star-studded list of ambassadors included Bianca Gonzalez (who seems to be an omnipresent endorser these days), Phil Younghusband, Heart Evangelista, Xian Lim, Kim Jones, Tim Yap & others I can’t seem to identify from this angle. They’re shown on stage with Technomarine International Sales Manager Steven Sargent.

Mutya Datul: the Ibanag beauty queen

The Philippines proudly welcomes home Mutya Johanna Datul who is now a world beauty title holder after being crowned Miss Supranational 2013 in Minsk, Belarus. Our warmest congratulations to this beautiful lass from Sta. Maria, Isabela who belongs to the Ibanags, one of the ethnolinguistic minorities in the country (a.k.a. ethnic groups).

Mutya was quite the dark horse in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 which we watched live in Smart Araneta Coliseum this year. She did not stand out much because she wasn’t as articulate as the other contestants. But what do you know, the judges’ eyes are trained differently. She eventually bagged the Best in Swimsuit and one of the major titles, Miss Supranational Philippines.

In the end, it was all about Mutya’s lovely smile, perfect figure and embodiment of the Filipina beauty

So we watched Bb. Pilipinas 2013 and got to notice Mutya Datul because her handlers/trainers were seated behind us – ever ready (and rowdy) with support for her. We were silently laughing at her Q & A with the judge (because of the accent and all) but her handlers were shouting at the top of their voices “pwede na yan! panalo na…panalo na!” (good enough, it’s a win!)

It seems the Bb. Pilipinas judges’ decision to let Mutya Johanna Datul represent the country in Miss Supranational 2013 in Belarus was a wise one after all. You don’t need perfect English to stand out in a pageant held in a European country.

Also,even in Miss Universe, it’s time our beauty queens avail of the services of an interpreter instead of fumbling with their answers a la Venus Raj. #justsaying
