Remember the good old days when we used to spend the hot summer season playing video games instead of going out? Yeah, that’s it! Let’s go back to those cartridge-tapping, CD-cleaning era as we take a look at the top 10 console games we played in the 90s.
Note: List is in chronological order.
Super Mario Bros. (1985) – NES/Family Computer
Sold 40.24 million copies. Some of us didn’t get enough sunshine because of this game. I mean who wouldn’t enjoy two plumbers who who are fond of mushrooms, stars, flowers, coins, and a princess in a dungeon. The most amusing part about playing Super Mario Bros. is that we were so ahead of our time that we sometimes, out of desperation, attempt to control the characters by moving the controller itself. If you know what I mean.
The Legend of Zelda (1986) – Family Computer
Sold 1.69 million copies. This one’s a legend. I didn’t have the chance to play this version (I started with the Ocarina of Time) but for those who did, it is obviously well received and has set the standards for other RPG games.
Tetris (1989) – Game Boy
Sold 35 million copies. There’s always something satsifying about putting falling pieces together perfectly just so you can delete them afterwards. Pointless but epic.
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991) – SNES
Sold 6.3 million copies. 8 playable characters with different nationalities, fighting styles and combo systems. Not to mention the car and barrel breaking bonus stages.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) – Sega Genesis
Sold 15 million copies. Probably the fastest game I’ve played in a Sega console. I never got to finish this game though. So screw you Dr. Robotnik!
Tekken (1994) – Sony PlayStation
Although it first appeared in the arcade platform, Tekken also became an all time console favorite due to its awesome fighting gameplay, huge character lineup and 3D graphics. To date, there are now 8 Tekken installments and has grown to a total of 60 characters in its roster.
Virtua Fighter 2 (1995) – Sega Saturn
Sold 2.2 million copies. Most probably Sega’s answer to Namco’s Tekken. It didn’t garner much success compared to Tekken but it’s one of the best 3D fighting games of its time. Plus, the anime was awesome. It was on GMA 7 right?
Super Mario 64 (1996) – Nintendo 64
Sold 11.62 million copies. The same concept – Mario has to beat Bowser and save Princess Peach. But this time it’s in a 3D environment and Mario has learned a lot of fancy tricks. The best Super Mario so far.
Gran Turismo (1997) – Sony PlayStation
Sold 10.85 million copies. Gran Turismo first. Driving school later.
Final Fantasy VII (1997) – Sony PlayStation
Sold 10 million copies. Beautifully rendered characters, awesome storyline and musical soundtrack. Plus, it has Tifa, Aerith and Yuffie in it. What more can I say?
Bonus: Pokemon Red / Blue / Green (1996, 1999) – Game Boy
Sold 23.64 million copies. Gotta catch ‘em all, right?
Special mention: The Brick Game
60-in-1, 100-in-1, 999-in-1??? You can play 20 variants of Tetris in one sitting. Hours of fun!
That rounds it up! My fingers are tired. Hope you guys enjoyed it though. We’ll be working on classic PC games and arcade games next so feel free to pitch in your suggestions in the comments below. :)
