Passport applicants to expect easier online appointments starting September

The APO Production Unit Inc., has reportedly foiled fixers that pull off scams regarding the application of passports — resulting to about two to three months of scheduling online appointments.

Inquirer.net reports that APO Production, a government-owned printing facility, believe that these scammers are backed by syndicates and earn as much as Php2.5 million by intentionally blocking out passport application slots. Rates start at Php5,000 and could increase in value depending on the chosen date and time slot of the applicants.

Dominic Tajon, Sales Manager for APO Production, mentions that IT experts have uncovered this illegal operation while installing a new security feature in the DFA’s online passport application last June.

To avoid this form of corruption, APO has already signed a memorandum of agreement with the DFA which allows them to handle the passport processing.

“The days of fixers are numbered because the Department of Foreign Affairs has allowed APO Production to handle the end-to-end passport processing in the next two months,” said Tajon in an interview with the diplomatic press corps on Thursday.

Tajon added that the public can expect ease in getting online appointment by September, when applicants under the old system would have been accommodated.

Valenzuela launches first online billing and payment for business permits

Valenzuela City, today, launches the first-in-the-country online billing and payment for business permits. Citizens of the area could now simply go their website and log in to their accounts.

For those creating a new account, there’s a button that directs you to a registration page in which you can key in information like account ownership and different business accounts. Once all spaces have been filled out, you can proceed and register your business permit.

Not much details regarding the service have been disclosed on their official website, but we could only assume that you can view your bill and pay them online via partnered credit card companies. This solves the hassle of going to a designated place and falling in line to accomplish the same task. Renewal of business permits could also be done here, according to their Facebook page.

With this service (that’s currently on beta), viewing, paying, and renewing should be more efficient.

Facebook to alert you against nation-state hacks

Facebook posts on its page that they will be alerting you if they think the government is trying to breach your account.

“While we have always taken steps to secure accounts that we believe to have been compromised, we decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored. We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts, the announcement said.”

With that said, the Login Approvals will make sure that no one else could gain access to your account by blocking other devices trying to do so. If someone wants to log in, Facebook will send a code directly to your registered phone that needs to be inputted before successfully logging in. This ensures that only you and anyone you authorize could have access to your account.
