Here’s how you can keep your current 15GB free OneDrive storage

Remember when Microsoft announced that it will downgrade the free OneDrive storage to 5GB and discountinue the free 15GB camera roll bonus space for Microsoft accounts starting next year? Here’s the good news: The Redmond company has reconsidered its forthcoming changes and made it possible for current users to retain their spaces by creating an option to keep them.

It’s a good holiday present from Microsoft, who recently withdrew its unlimited storage options in light a recent incident involving “a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average.”

To keep your current free 15GB OneDrive space (and 30GB to those who activated their camera rolls on Windows Phones) by clicking on this link. Once you opt in, Microsoft will ask for permissions to add or remove OneDrive space anytime. After that, you will be directed to a space that you have kept in your current storage.

The offer expires January 31, so we recommend to act now before it gets beyond that date.

OneDrive withdraws unlimited storage option

Attention OneDrive users. Changes are coming to the cloud storage service from Microsoft. Read on to know what’s new for 2016 and plan ahead of the changes.

As stated in a post over OneDrive’s blog, “a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average.”

Because of the reason given by OneDrive, they will no longer offer unlimited storage to Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscribers. Instead, they will have 1TB to fill up. Paid plan for new users is now 50GB for $1.99/month. No more 100GB and 200GB plans available. For most who enjoys free storage for 15GB, sorry to break it to you, it will be limited to 5GB. Also, the extra 15GB camera roll storage will be discontinued. Expect the changes to be in effect early next year.

Now, what if you have files uploaded to the service that exceed the new allocations? If you are an Office 365 subscriber, OneDrive will notify you for storing excess bytes over 1TB and will be able to continue with the service for at least 12 months. If you are not happy with the changes, a pro-rated refund is available.

Free users, who are using more than 5GB of storage, can still access their files for at least 12 months from the effective date. Those already subscribed to the 100GB or 200GB plan will not be affected of the changes..

Microsoft renames SkyDrive to OneDrive

Microsoft has announced that it will soon change the name of its cloud storage platform, SkyDrive, to OneDrive.

The renaming was due to a trademark issue with a British broadcasting company, BSkyB. You can read all about it here. On the bright side, this shouldn’t cause any problems since it’s just the service’s name that Microsoft is changing.

“Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more.” said Microsoft in a blog post.

Current users of either SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro shouldn’t worry as the service will continue to operate and all of the user’s content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business once the new name rolls out.
