Nokia Lumia 925 is now official, L920 on steroids

Following the release of the Asha a couple of days ago, Nokia announces a new flagship phone – the Lumia 925. The phone is every bit of the Lumia 920 but better. It has 4G LTE, an improved aluminum frame and a few software additions.

Starting off with the display, Nokia has abandoned the IPS LCD of the 920 and opted for a ClearBlack AMOLED panel. The size is retained on 4.5-inches, still with a resolution of 768 x 1280.

The back of the phone is the same polycarbonate, but the side frame is made out of aluminum. Nokia has turned the thick and heavy Lumia 920 into a sleek piece of hardware – from 10.7mm to 8.5mm and from 185g to 139g.

The phone will come in monochrome colors, meaning the bright colors that we love on the Lumia phones can only be accessed through a purchase of sleeves. Wireless charging can only be enabled through that too.

Nokia is also trying to catch-up with camera software. While Windows Phone has it’s own plain camera app, Nokia tops all of that with Smart Camera – which will feature Best Shot, Action Shot, Motion Blur Shot & so on.

Nokia Lumia 925 specs:
4.5-inch 1280×768 ClearBlack AMOLED display
1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Krait CPU
Adreno 225 GPU
1GB RAM
8.7MP PureView camera
with 1080p HD video (low-light, image stabilization)
1.3MP front-facing camera, 720p
Windows Phone 8
4G LTE
2,000mAh, non-removable
8.5 mm (thickness)
139g (weight)

Pricing is $616 before taxes, which is around Php25-26k. The Nokia Lumia 920 landed months ago for a price of Php27k, so expect the flagship update to take its place, creating a price drop for the 920. Since the new Lumia features LTE, we can hope & expect that the local telcos will offer it.

Apparently, we weren’t able to see the rumored 41MP Nokia “EOS” running Windows Phone, which is quite disappointing. Nevertheless, will it be worth the upgrade? Did the Lumia 925 impress? Leave your comment & your opinion down below.

The Nokia Lumia 950 hoax that got out

There’s been the a leak of a mystery device going around the internet for a while — the Nokia Lumia 950, which is supposed to be the company’s next flagship with a PureView camera and an outstanding battery life. However, we are 100% sure that it’s not authentic. Read on to find out why.

nl950

The leaked image is speculated to be a 3D render only since the sources weren’t identified to be reliable. The specs that came with it are a 768 x 1280 AMOLED display (no 1080p to save battery life) and is a variant of the PureMotion HD tech that Nokia used on the Lumia 920.

The camera will be featuring not a 41MP sensor, but one of the same kind with loseless zoom, oversampling, optical image stabilization & great low-light performance. Other details include 2GB RAM & Windows Phone 8, and it’s expected to be future-proofed with the specs it will come with. The unit itself is said to be part of a “back to roots” strategy for Nokia.

Now, here comes the tricky part. Remember the Nokia Lumia 820 that we reviewed? We mentioned how sleek it looks without the back cover, so we just made a little mock-up of what it looks like without it, then comes in the additional details like the button, the logo’s placement and the front-facing camera’s relocation.

This was an unpublished April Fools day prank that is somewhere still with us, and apparently, someone picked it up. We’re sorry to say, but the Nokia Lumia 950 leak is a fake.

Will you be getting a new smartphone this December?

It is Christmas season, and most of us are already looking for gifts to give, gifts to ask for and gifts for ourselves (13th month pays? Self-rewarding?). A lot, surely, are keeping an eye on gadgets.

There are a lot of choices out there. Some might eye on the already available Samsung Galaxy S III while some might opt for the more recent Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

If you’re not planning to go that way, there are many more options. We’re pretty sure that there’s no ‘best’ phone, but there is indeed a best phone for you. There’s the Nokia PureView 808 for photographers and some rugged smartphones like the Sony Xperia Acro S for the adventurers.

The iPhone 5 will be launching before Christmas, but let’s not forget that there more devices available outside the Philippines that haven’t arrived here yet. Well, not officially of course. Most of them are available through the gray market and through other sources, but of course these devices will be sold at relatively higher prices.

For example, the iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 are already available in the Philippines through other re-sellers – but not through Apple’s stores yet. You can get them at much higher costs, but this is all just the result of the laws of supply & demand.

We can’t help but feel hesitant to buy gadgets (and to ask for gadgets) as we know that there is a possibility that they might get immediately outdated within a few months.

There are the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 – which are not officially announced yet for the Philippines. The list also includes the much awaited Nokia Lumia 920, the Microsoft Surface and the iPad Mini.

And of course, a lot of Filipinos are also waiting on Blackberry 10, which will be available very early next year.

There are a lot of reasons not to buy a new smartphone (or tablet) this December, but of course, what’s Christmas without giving? You’re going to miss the whole point and the spirit if we delay all the giving.

And also, you can’t keep waiting forever. Here we are, receiving the all new iPad and all of a sudden, a newer and faster iPad comes out months later.

So, what will it be? Will you be getting a new smartphone regardless of the price? Would you buy what’s available now? Or would you just let December pass and save the upgrades for next year?

Man behind PureView, Damian Dinning, leaves Nokia

Damian Dining has been with Nokia for 8 years and now he has decided to leave on November 30.

Following the release of the Lumia 920 and the PureView 808, it was very surprising that he would leave Nokia. Dinning was responsible for bringing us such breathtaking innovations such as the 41 megapixel shooter and the 8.7 megapixel camera on the Lumia 920.

But don’t think just yet that he will be transferring to another mobile company. He states that at such a young age, he had been interested in two major thing, photography and cars; now, he decides to enter the field of automobiles, specifically, Jaguar Land Rover.

As he and Nokia would call it, the PureView 808 was phase 1, and the Lumia 920 was phase 2; both specialized at doing entirely different things. What would happen to phase 3 and so forth?

Well, the PureView team isn’t gone and it’s just a man less. After all, Nokia has a very strong foundation on R&D. Maybe sooner or later, PureView phase 3 might showcase a high resolution camera with oversampling, loseless zoom, image stabilization and low-light capabilities combined.
