Nokia sells HERE to automotive companies for EUR 2.8 billion

Nokia has announced that it has agreed to sell its HERE digital mapping and location services business to an automotive industry consortium for EUR 2.8 billion.

The leading automotive industry consortium is comprised of AUDI AG, BMW Group and Daimler AG. The transaction is expected to close in Q1 of 2016.

According to Nokia, HERE is developing a location cloud that harnesses the power of data generated by vehicles, devices and infrastructure to deliver real-time, predictive and personalized location services. This technology is valuable to the automotive industry where precise and accurate mapping is required.

Like the proposed acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent for EUR 15.6 billion, the sale of HERE to the consortium is part of Nokia’s transformation as a renewed company with a world-leading network technology and services business.

Nokia HERE Maps now available in the Google Play Store

Lazada Philippines

As Nokia expands its services across its platforms and even revealed its first device after the Microsoft deal, it announced that the HERE Maps app is now available beyond just Samsung phones, as the app went live for all Android users in the Google Play Store.

Here for Android

The app, which works absolutely free, had actually been available for Android users a day before, but only as an APK (Android application package) download. Starting today, the app is finally available for installation where the Android masses gather to discover and download new apps.

Nokia’s mapping service enters the Android ecosystem where it is dominated locally by Google’s own Maps and crowd-sourcing traffic application Waze. The Finnish company also noted that the iOS version of the app will be live sometime early next year, despite early confirmations that both the iOS and Android apps will be finished by the end of the year.

Have you downloaded the new application? If not, head right over here. Tell us your thoughts about it!

HERE Maps now available for non-Samsung phones

Microsoft may have totally eradicated the Nokia brand from their smartphone lineup, but the Finnish company is far from dead. In fact they’ve announced that the Android-friendly version of their popular navigation app, HERE for Android, is now available for broader range of Android smartphones.

Here For Android

HERE for Android was initially launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy Gear S and was made available to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users through Samsung’s own app store. Fast-forward to today and Nokia seems ready enough to venture outside of Samsung devices as they release the software in public for other Android smartphone users to enjoy.

Nokia’s highly-regarded navigation app can be downloaded from this link. Meanwhile, instructions on how to side-load the app to your device can be found here.

Do note though that the downloadable APK of HERE for Android is still in its Beta stage. As such, users are most likely to encounter bugs and errors in the current version of the app.

Another thing to bear in mind is that not all Android smartphones are supported at the moment, and the company has not provided a list of all devices that are compatible with it. Nokia did, however, say that HERE for Android should be compatible with Android devices with at least 1GB of RAM and are running on Jellybean (4.1) and up.
