Facebook planning to acquire WhatsApp?

Sources tell TechCrunch that social media giant Facebook is interested in buying popular mobile chat program WhatsApp.

Mark Zuckerberg believes that the future of Facebook is in mobile and its $1 billion acquisition of mobile app Instagram proves that the social network is serious in going down that path. Now there are news circulating that Facebook is in talks to buy WhatsApp to further improve its presence in cross-platform mobile messaging.

So far there’s no information regarding price range and how Facebook will utilize the messaging platform if ever it pushes through with the acquisition.

WhatsApp is an ad-free smartphone messaging app that works on Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Symbian, and Windows Phone. Earlier this year it reported on its blog that it was sending over a billion messages a day. “That is 41,666,667 messages an hour, 694,444 messages a minute, and 11,574 messages a second.”

SMS turns 20 years today!

The first time I got to try SMS was sometime in 1996 and I did not know the first time it was established was way back in 1984.

At that time, it was still a test. It took about 8 years more before it became a standard and the very first commercial SMS was sent out in 1992.

Engineer Neil Papworth sent the first SMS to an Orbitel 901 handset via Vodafone UK’s network in 1992: “Merry Christmas.

Here in the Philippines, Islacom first offered commercial GSM service in February 1994 while Smart was first established in 1991 by Orlando Vea (now President/CEO of Sun Cellular after PLDT bought Digitel) and started commercial service in December 1993.

Filipinos send over a billion SMS each month, contributing to an annual 7 trillion SMS sent out globally each year.

Anybody remembered their first cellphone and SMS in the 90s?

Asus releases Nexus 7 audio dock

Asus’ Japanese Website just posted an accessory for sale, a dock for the Nexus 7, which will be available by December.

The dock will operate once the tablet is placed horizontally and is designed to enhance the loudness and the quality of the sound. Details are quite scarce but the accessory will feature a micro USB port for charging and energy supply purposes, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

The Nexus 7 will be harmonizing with the dock through pogo pin connectors. It was very seldom that we see companies utilizing the functionalities of pogo pins; we’re hoping that local companies will be maximizing the existence of these docking pins.

The docking station will be selling for 3,480 Japanese Yen, which is around Php1,800. We are hoping it won’t sell exclusively at the Google Play Store as that won’t be available for our country, but seeing Asus selling it in Japan through their site might be a good sign.

Facebook rolls out Photo Sync for Android and iOS

One of the first things that greeted me this morning on Facebook was Photo Sync – a feature that let’s you upload photos automatically from your mobile device to the social network.

The concept is pretty simple, Photo Syncing lets you save the photos from your phone’s gallery to Facebook automatically, similar to what Google+ does with its instant photo uploads. Facebook then stores the photos in your private folder so you can choose which ones to share later on. To access this feature just go to your Timeline on your Android or iOS device, tap on Photos then tap on Synced at the bottom of the page.

Facebook uploads the photos in a much smaller file size (about 100KB). Still you are given 2GB of cloud storage with an option to sync it over mobile internet or WiFi.
