Netflix to make a live-action Gundam movie

Legendary Entertainment is working on Sunrise’s Gundam for a live-action adaptation on Netflix, which will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

As reported by The Verge, Legendary was first announced to be working with Sunrise on the live-action Gundam film in 2018.

Today, April 13, a tweet from Netflix updates the public that Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct and produce Legendary’s first-ever live-action that will feature the film version of Sunrise’s Gundam for Netflix. Vogt-Roberts has also previously directed 2017’s Kong: Skull Island for Legendary, making over USD 566 million at the worldwide box office.

Besides, Brian K. Vaughan is working as well on this project as a writer and executive producer, with Cale Boyter overseeing on behalf of Legendary with the Sunrise creative team.

The massively popular Mecha anime and science fiction media franchise is Sunrise’s multi-billion-dollar property created in 1979 and has produced a multi-platform universe encompassing televised anime, manga, animated films, video games, plastic models, toys, and novels, among other media. Gundam remains to dominate Bandai Namco’s earnings almost 40 years after its origin.

There’s no other news yet from Netflix about the actual plot for the live-action; however, the original Gundam series is set in an era in which humanity had to emigrate to space colonies due to its rapid population growth. Eventually, these space colonies sought out their independence, waging war on those on Earth. Because of this war, both the protagonist and antagonist grow and display maturity in the series—whether in or out of their mech battle suits.
