The MSI Slidebook S20 is a Windows 8-powered convertible ultrabook that has the capability to transform into a tablet using a sliding mechanism. It was first announced in January during CES 2013 and is MSI’s flagship Windows 8 ultrabook.
Unlike most clam shell-type Windows 8 hybrid ultrabooks, the Slidebook is initially a tablet when you take it out of the box and features a 11.6-inch 1080p IPS display with a 10-point multi-touch screen. The body is made of durable plastic with two different finish – the top part having a glossy finish while the bottom is metallic. It is 20mm thick and weighs 1.16kg which is relatively light for a notebook but really hefty for a tablet.
As the name suggests, you will need to slide the top part of the device to reveal the keyboard. The Slidebook doesn’t use a stand or any locking parts to prop the display up, instead it uses a tight hinge that keeps the display in place. All you have to do is tilt the display to a preferred angle and you now have a fully working ultrabook.
The experience however is different from a full-size notebook as the Slidebook’s keyboard doesn’t have a trackpad. There’s no palm-rest as well so typing on it feels a bit cramped even if the keys are well-spaced. On the bright side, the design makes the Slidebook look very portable and doesn’t take a lot of desk space.
