Sony A7 Mark II lands in Southeast Asia

Lazada Philippines

Singapore – Sony Philippines has invited us to witness the regional launch of the Sony A7 Mark II, the latest addition to the full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera lineup of the Japan-based camera maker.

Contrary to what its naming may suggest, the arrival of the new Sony A7 Mark II doesn’t mean the end of Sony’s first full-frame MILC, the Sony A7. Instead, it will serve as an additional variant of the company’s current compact full frame lineup, just like the A7R and the A7S.

Sony A7 II

That being said, the Sony A7 Mark II is aimed at users who are looking for an extra oomph out of their camera, and that extra boost comes from the 5-axis Image Stabilization or what the company is so eager to coin as the SteadyShot.

We’ve seen other mirrorless cameras infused with a similar stabilization in the past (Olympus OM-D), but Sony is keen to point out that this is the first time that a 5-axis IS is implemented on a full frame camera, making the Sony A7 Mark II a world’s first.

Sony A7 Mark II specs:
24MP CMOS sensor
Sensor Type: Full-frame (36 x 24mm)

The Sony A7 Mark II is now available in Singapore and the body-only package sells for 2,149 Singapore Dollars. The body plus kit lens (SEL2870) bundle, on the other hand, will set you back an additional 400 Singapore Dollars.

Olympus PEN Lite E-PL7 announced, selfie features in tow

Olympus has recently launched the sixth iteration of its digital PEN Lite camera, the PEN Lite E-PL7, which inherits the rangefinder-inspired form factor of its Micro Four-Thirds predecessor, but offers added features to make it more relevant in this selfie-centric age.

By and large, the new PEN E-PL7’s design doesn’t vary that much from the PEN E-PL5 back in 2012. It still has the compact and lightweight body, coupled with uncluttered button and ergonomic design.

What changed though is the addition of a mechanism behind the display which allows it to flip downwards by 180 degrees, making it easier for users to take selfies in the process.

Sony A7S now official, “S” for Sensitivity

In the days leading up to the official announcement, rumor-mongers have speculated that the upcoming Sony A7S will be able to shoot 4K clips. While their claims were partly true, there’s more to this new full-frame, mirrorless camera than meets the eye.

Just to set things clear, by default the new Sony Alpha 7S can only record 1080p clips at 60fps and 720p videos at 120fps (APS-C mode). However, its sensor is capable of outputting uncompressed 4:2:2 video feeds with 4K resolution (3840×2160) via HDMI.

That said, the Panasonic Lumix GH4 has a slight edge over the A7S in this category. But the Sony Alpha 7S levels the playing field by having a full-frame sensor which is twice as big as the ones found at the heart of the GH4.

Now that we have that straightened out, let’s talk about the other aspects of the A7s. Externally, the camera inherits the same compact and minimalist design of its Alpha 7 siblings. It also shares most of the feature set of the A7/A7r like Multi-Interface Shoe, NFC and Wi-Fi.

But what really sets this bad boy apart from the two other cameras that came before it (apart from the ability to capture 4K videos) is the sensor inside it. The Sony A7s’ sensor has an insane ISO range of 50-409,600 which puts it at par with the Nikon D4S.

Sony A7s specs:
12.2MP CMOS sensor
Sensor Type: Full-frame (36 x 24mm)
Contrast Detect AF w/ 25 AF points
ISO 50 – 409,600
30 sec. – 1/8000 sec. shutter speed
12fps continuous drive
Optional External Flash via Hot shoe
2.4M-dot Electronic Viewfinder
0.71x Magnification, 100% coverage
3” Articulating 921k-dot LCD
1080p video recording @60fps
720p video recording @120fps
Optional 4K Video Recording via HDMI
MPEG-4, AVCHD, XAVC-S video formats
NFC
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
SD / SDHC / SDXC
RAW + JPEG file format
DMW-BLF19Lithium-Ion battery
Dimension: 127 x 94 x 48mm
Weight: 489g

Interestingly, the Sony A7s has the least number of pixels (12.2MP) compared to the A7 (24.3MP) and A7r (36.4MP). This results to bigger pixel size which, theoretically, should equate to cleaner images even at high ISO.

Sony has not yet announced the pricing and availability of the new A7s, but we’ll keep you guys posted once they do.

Fujifilm unveils the Weather-Sealed X-T1

After a series of teasers and leaks, Fuji has finally announced the latest addition to their highly-regarded X-Series lineup – the Fujifilm X-T1.

The X-T1 is unlike any of the X-Series cameras we’ve seen in the past. Fuji went for a more robust, magnesium alloy frame with their latest brainchild instead of a compact mirrorless body that has recently become their bread and butter.

Fujifilm X-T1

Luckily, the Japanese firm decided to keep the analog dials that made their high-end mirrorless offerings such a huge hit among photographers. In addition to the Shutter Speed and Exposure Compensation dials at the top, Fuji added an ISO knob placed on the left shoulder of the X-T1.

The company has also added an extra pair of switches around the ISO and Shutter Speed dials which controls Drive and Metering Modes respectively. This kind of button layout is somewhat similar to ones found on Nikon’s mid-range and high-end dSLR cameras.

Fuji X-T1

In addition to these subtle improvements, Fuji also made a few significant changes on the X-T1’s repertoire which includes a revamped 2.36M-dot EVF with a chart-topping 0.77x magnification. To put in perspective, X-T1 viewfinder is even bigger than the one found on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and even bigger than the Canon EOS 1D-X’s.

Underneath its weather-sealed body, the X-T1 has the same configuration as the Fuji X-E2 which recently made its debut on the local market. This includes 16MP X-Trans II CMOS sensor, EXR II image processor and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Fujifilm X-T1 specs:
16MP X-Trans II CMOS sensor
Sensor Type: APS-C (23.6 x 15.6 mm)
EXR II image processor
Hybrid AF system (Contrast/Phase)
Lens-type Optical Image Stabilization
ISO 200 – 6400
Expandable to ISO 100 and ISO 25600
30 sec. – 1/4000 sec. shutter speed
8fps continuous drive
No Built-In Flash, external flash (EF-X8) included
Optional External Flash via Hot shoe
1/180 Flash-Sync speed
2.36M-dot Electronic Viewfinder
0.77x Magnification, 100% coverage
3” Articulating 1.04M-dot LCD
1080p video recording @60fps
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
SD / SDHC / SDXC
RAW + JPEG file format
NP-W126 Lithium-Ion battery
Dimension: 129 x 90 x 47mm
Weight: 440g

The new Fujifilm X-T1 is expected to hit the shelves by next month and will be retailed for USD1,300 for the Body-Only deal and addition USD400 for the Body + Kit Lens (XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4) package.
