Marshmallow 6.0 is now on 4.6% of Android devices

Android fragmentation issue is not going anywhere as the new numbers from Google itself shows that it’s latest version has reached only a few devices so far.

android-distribution-april-2016

Android 6.0 Marshmallow has just 4.6% of share among other versions. Among those less than 5% are probably Nexus products, Android One smartphones, and some newer devices released in the market. Major manufacturers have also started to update some its phones and tablets to 6.0.1.

It’s been months since Google released this certain flavor of its operating system but, once again, OEMs and other involved parties are not swift enough to distribute it. Then again, with the vast Android devices out there, from cheap to expensive, it’s quite difficult to push a compatible update.

The big share still belongs to the infamous Lollipop version with a combined stats of 35.8%, while KitKat is running behind at 33.4%. Jelly Bean is still at large at 21.3%.

So, what’s your Android version at the moment?

CloudFone Excite Prime Hands-on, First Impressions

CloudFone has a lot of new smartphone devices for the local market and one of them is the Excite Prime which sports an HD display, octa-core chipset, and 2GB of RAM for under Php4k.

cloudfone-excite-prime-9

The CloudFone Excite Prime has a 5.5-inch IPS LCD with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels for a 267ppi density. It’s rocking a 1.4GHz MediaTek MT65892 octa-core processor with an ample 2GB of RAM. Storage is at 16GB with a microSD card slot supporting up to 32GB.

cloudfone-excite-prime-8

A tour of the device will show a utilitarian device having the front occupied by a 5.5-inch display, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, earpiece and a couple sensors. The right has the usual power/lock button and the volume rocker leaving the left side clean. On top is 3.5mm jack while the bottom houses the micro-USB port and the microphone jack.

cloudfone-excite-prime-10

The back has the 13-megapixel autofocus camera with a single LED flash and the loudspeaker. It’s a removable back cover showing the replaceable 2820mAh battery along with the dual micro-SIM card slots and the microSD card slot.

cloudfone-excite-prime-11

Overall build is generally okay and thanks to the faux-leather back panel, holding the Excite Prime on hand is grippy. The bezels are quite thick making the device bigger than the usual 5.5-inch smartphones.

cloudfone-excite-prime-5

Running the show is Android 5.1 Lollipop. Interestingly, while the overall look and feel of the UI is stock, CloudFone has omitted the app tray much like the iOS. With its decent specification, it was able to score 28,499 on Antutu Benchmark 6.0.

The Excite Prime only has 3G-connectivity along with the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s also OTG-capable, which is nifty to have at times. We hoped it had LTE for it to be a completely packaged budget device for 2016.

CloudFone Excite Prime specifications:
5.5-inch IPS LCD (1280 x 720 pixels), 267ppi
1.4GHz MediaTek MT65892 octa-core processor
2GB RAM
16GB internal storage
Expandable via microSD up to 32GB
13-megapixel autofocus camera w/ LED flash
5-megapixel front camera
Dual SIM / Dual Standby
3G HSPA+
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth
FM Radio
Android 5.1 Lollipop

The CloudFone Excite Prime retails for Php3,999 and you’ll get a free protective cover and Spotify earphones for every purchase.

Cherry Mobile Flare Selfie Review

While a lot of flagship devices have quality front cameras, budget devices are left behind with low megapixel shooters, but not the Cherry Mobile Flare Selfie. With its 16-megapixel front camera, it’s bound to give great selfies. It also has a fingerprint sensor, which is rare in this segment.

With its impressive megapixel count, can the Flare Selfie live up to its name and also as your everyday smartphone? Read on through the review to find out.

Design and Construction

Like other new Flare smartphone from Cherry Mobile, the Flare Selfie is designed to be a premium on a budget. With its aluminum frame, holding the device on hand will give a lasting impression on its build. It’s solid and does feel like a more expensive phone. Although, the glossy back may not be as likable as the aluminum frame.

The front is familiar with the 5-inch display, earpiece, a couple of sensors, and the front-facing camera with a single LED flash.

The right side has the volume rocker and the power/lock button while the SIM card tray is on the left side.

On top is the 3.5mm headphone jack with the secondary microphone. The bottom end houses the micro-USB port, primary microphone, and the loudspeaker.

Flipping to the back will show the rear camera with its two-tone LED flash, the fingerprint scanner, and some branding labels.

I’ll give Cherry Mobile its deserved praise by giving the new Flare series aluminum construction. Having this gives the Flare Selfie a firm build with no creaks or whatsoever. It’s time to say goodbye to poorly built devices soon as we see more similar designs this year.

Comparison: Lenovo A6000 Plus vs A7000 Plus

Lenovo has recently launched the A6000 Plus on our shores with a sub-7k price tag. It’s closest sibling, the A7000 Plus, which is a localized version of the K3 Note, is just a thousand buck more expensive. What are the cuts done to get a cheaper SRP? Check out the tablet below:

Obviously, the A6000 Plus has a smaller display at 5″ vs 5.5″ and the resolution received a downgrade to 720p. It also carries a different, less powerful chipset but retains 2GB of RAM. Internal storage is also the same at 16GB. Another cut is found with the rear camera since it now has an 8-megapixel sensor and a single LED flash with a 2-megapixel selfie camera.

Aside from the hardware, Lenovo also demoted the Android software to Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box but the Lollipop update is readily available (although it’s a hefty download). The sound enhancement is also now just Dolby Digital Plus rather than Dolby Atmos. Yet, the A6000 Plus has twin speakers at the back.

To offer the A6000 Plus for Php 6,999 with the A7000 Plus lying around for just Php 7,999, we’d say the cuts are not worth it. Still, we’re currently working on the review of the A6000 Plus, so stay tuned if the device can hold up on its own.
