Hands-on with the LG G3

During the launch of the LG G3, members of the media got to play around with the device and its accessories for an hour or so before we headed back to our respective hotels. We took this opportunity to be up close and personal with the new handset and give you guys a brief overview of LG’s new flagship smartphone.

LG clearly had one thing in their mind when they were designing the G3; SIMPLICITY. Gone are the over-the-top trappings you’d typically see on flashy flagship devices. Instead you’re left with a simple, yet elegant handset that’s almost all-screen at the front and has a curved back panel (“Floating Arc”) which makes it easier to grip it despite of having a fairly large display.

The LG G3 inherits the “Rear Key” button placements of its predecessor, albeit more refined and fits perfectly into the overall design of the device. These buttons, as well as the other notable components such as the 13MP rear camera and the accompanying LED flash, are surrounded by a removable polycarbonate case which is treated with a thin sheet of scratch-resistant coating.

Not only does this back cover prevent light scratches, it emulates the feel of a brushed metal finish which adds a hint of sophistication to the otherwise glossy plastic back panel.

In comparison with the previous model, the LG G3 is slightly taller and wider to accommodate the larger display. It also has put on a little bit of weight, but it’s not really that noticeable when you hold the phone.

The LG G3 feels very nice to the touch thanks to its “Floating Arc” design and the faux-metal finish of its back cover. Also, because of these new design implementations, navigating through the phone’s various menus and settings is possible (and comfortable, if I may add) without the need to hold the phone with two hands.

We really have to give it to LG for stepping up their game in designing their new flagship smartphone. From the choice of materials, down to every nooks and crannies, you can easily tell that the company really went out of their way to make sure that their latest creation will be a stand out.

It’s still early, but we think we got a keeper on the LG G3. It’s got great looks to match its very respectable feature set that brings it at par, if not ahead, with the rest of the flagship smartphones in the market. Needless to say, we’re really excited to spend more time with the LG G3 and share with you guys our full review.

LG G3 display compared against Galaxy S5 and One M8

As we get closer and closer to seeing the LG G3, more and more details have been surfacing regarding the South Korean manufacturer’s next flagship smartphone. Just recently, LG itself has leaked the dimension of its upcoming handset and a mockup was made based on this to determine how big the display will be.

The mockup puts the LG G3 side by side with other current flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8). In terms of screen resolution, the G3 reigns supreme since we know that it will be sporting a qHD display with 2560 x 1440 pixels, while the two only sports Full HD at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

The LG G3’s 5.5-inch display is undoubtedly larger than the S5’s 5.1-inch and One (M8)’s 5-inch screen, and you might think that this is just way too big since it’s almost as big as the Galaxy Note 3 phablet’s 5.7-inch panel. Although this may be the case, the mockup shows that the One (M8) is even taller than the G3. LG managed to do this by widening the display to make use of more space, while also reducing its bezels to a minimum.

What we’re seeing here is that even though LG equipped the G3 with a far larger display than its peers, it looks like it won’t be that hefty and will still be manageable with one hand. They’ve also managed to squeeze in a bigger 2K resolution into its screen so we can expect the G3 to have one impressive display when it’s officially released.

What to Expect from the LG G3

It has already been confirmed that LG is launching their next flagship phone this upcoming May 28. The LG G3 has been subject to lots of speculation, leaks and talks already, but what exactly are we waiting for? Read on ton find out what to expect from the LG G3.

Design & Construction

The LG G3 has leaked in a lot of images already, with cases or without. From the looks of it, the body may employ a unibody aluminum finish to give it a premium feel (or just plastic with aluminum design). LG’s signature back buttons will still be making a show here, and beside the camera to the left, there is something that looks like a sensor with a yet to be known function. The competition is currently offering different hardware selections with fingerprint scanners, dual cameras, heart rate monitors and waterproofing, so it’s exciting to see what LG will pull off here.

From the leaked specs to speculations itself, we may be looking at a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560, a quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal memory + micro SD card support and a 13+2 megapixel camera pair that has still not been discussed much. It is reported that it’s going to be the same sensor with the OnePlus One with OIS+, so we’ll have to see how that turns out. As for the battery, it is expected to pack the same capacity as the LG G Pro 2 at 3,200mAh.

That’s about it for the specs, and whether the hardware can support that crazy resolution is still questionable. Regardless, those are still top of the line specs, beating a lot of those already in the market.

Software

LG is also upping up their game when it comes to software if the rumors are correct. Based from the leaked screenshots, their UI looks cleaner and better with the new design. It looks like they will lessen the clutter.

The next version of Android still hasn’t been announced yet, so it’s definitely going to be 4.4 KitKat. In addition, a Google Now-like interface is rumored to be arriving in the form of Concierge. How that will come into play is still unknown.

On top of everything, LG seems like they’re pushing more software features with the G3 like the QuickWindow case again, now in circular design – and speaking of which, the LG G3 will most likely have support for their G Watch.

That’s about it for the LG G3. So far, we’re looking at a winner here if these are all to be believed. LG has the chance to pull off one amazing smartphone if they manage to get the features right. Check out their teaser below:
