Lenovo outperforms Apple in the US

Well it seems that the efforts that Lenovo has put in in the recent months are starting to pay off as they end their fiscal year in a positive note thanks to their strong 4th fiscal quarter outing. Also, because of their stellar Q4 performance, Lenovo managed to dethrone Apple from the third spot (in the US) in terms of PC shipment in that quarter.

Despite of the predicted decline in the global PC sales, Lenovo defied the odds and was able to push 55 million PCs worldwide over the course of the whole fiscal year. This led to a 2.1 points increase in their global PC market share, now pegged at a record-high 17.7%, which represents a 5% year-over-year growth.

But the success the company had on the PC business is just the tip of the iceberg. As indicated on their press release, Lenovo also had a pretty respectable performance both in the smartphone and tablet division which, in large measure, helped catapult their annual revenue (USD38.7 billion), full year pre-tax income (USD1.01 billion) and full year earnings (USD817 million) to new heights.

According to their data, the company managed to ship 50 million smartphones and approximately 9.2 million tablets in the span of one fiscal year. In the fourth fiscal quarter alone, Lenovo claims that they’ve “outpaced the worldwide market by 28%” due to the 59.4% upsurge in their overall smartphone shipment.

Lenovo’s solid fiscal year performance solidifies their place among the key players in the PC and mobile devices divisions, not only in America, but around the world. The key now is for them is to continue putting pressure on their rivals and show them that this kind of remarkable performance is not just a one-time thing.

Lenovo Golden Warrior S8 (S898t+) specs:

5.3-inch Sharp LTPS display @ 1280 x 720 pixels with OGS technology and Gorilla 3 glass
1.4GHz MediaTek octa-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB storage (expandable via microSD)
12MP rear and 5MP front cameras
Dual-SIM
147 x 76.7 x 7.9mm
140 grams
Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

As of now the Golden Warrior S8 is reported to be a device of China Mobile and is compatible with the TD-SCDMA network of the carrier, but who knows as it might make its way to other countries including Philippines in the upcoming months.

Also, reports say there are possibilities of Lenovo releasing different variants of the S8. One variant could possibly be a WCDMA model if Xiaomi also comes up with it for its Redmi Note. Seems like Lenovo wouldn’t let Xiaomi get all the attention.

Lenovo S920 in the flesh, first impressions

A few months ago, the Lenovo S920 arrived in Philippine shores for a price below the 20k mark. It offered a huge 5.3-inch IPS HD display, a quad-core CPU, 1GB RAM & more in a body measuring at only 7.9mm. A unit just passed through our office recently, so read on to see our first impressions.

Lenovo S920 (2)

At first glance, the Lenovo S920 did remind us a lot of the HTC One X. There’s the 5.3-inch display with thin bezels on the sides, capacitive buttons right at the bottom and the brand logo above the display. The rest of the body is covered in white, and while it is made out of plastic, it feels a lot sturdier than other phones.

Lenovo S920 front back

The camera on the back is reminiscent of the HTC One X too as the lens is surrounded by a chrome-colored ring. It packs an 8-megapixel camera by the way, and while we’re yet to test it thoroughly, we managed to take a few shots and glad to say, it’s far from disappointing.

Lenovo S920 sides

  • Antutu – 13,507
  • Quadrant – 4,990
  • Nenamark 2 – 45.1

Lenovo’s skin on top of Android 4.2 still looks very cartoonish, but you can easily remedy that with a launcher. The CPU bundled with the 1GB RAM inside enabled the S920 to breeze through basic navigation & tasks.

Lenovo S920 specifications:
5.3-inch capacitive IPS HD display (1280×720 pixels), 277ppi
OGS Technology
Mediatek MTK6589 1.2 GHz quad-core processor
1GB RAM
4GB internal storage
up to 32GB via microSD
3G/HSPA+
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1
8MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera
Wireless FM radio
GPS with A-GPS
Li-Ion 2250mAh battery
Android 4.2 Jellybean
153.9 x 77.7 x 7.9 mm (dimensions)
152.2 grams (weight)

I wish we had a little more time to spend with the Lenovo S920. In our short experience with it, we were very pleased with what it can offer.

Lenovo S920 (3)

Right now, it’s priced at around Php16,999 which may be quite hard to justify for some, but if you’re looking for something jam-packed in a thin yet solid form factor, you may want to consider the S920.

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga and Yoga 2 Pro are official

Lenovo’s Yoga line-up is one of those remarkable ultrabook form factors that made its way to the industry. Now, at IFA Berlin, we are able to set our eyes on the new ThinkPad Yoga & the Yoga 2 Pro.

LENOVO YOGA

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga

Some of you might have noticed that instead of IdeaPad, Lenovo had injected the enterprise-centric brand ThinkPad before this Ultrabook. That’s because this one combines familiar elements from both series – the black industrial design, the red signature TrackPoint & of course, the ability to push the display forward to 360 degrees to turn it into a tablet.

A new system has been implemented by Lenovo here too. With their new Lift & Lock mechanism, the keys will now flatten on the back once you turn it into tablet mode. That will prevent a lot of damages & irritations with the keyboard.

The 12.5-inch 1080p display-packing ThinkPad Yoga goes up to Core i7 Haswell CPUs & 1TB storage.

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro

Aimed towards consumers, the Yoga 2 Pro improves on a lot of aspects from its predecessors. It now features a 13-inch 3200 x 1800 display and will run on 4th gen Intel Core CPUs. Apart from that, the Yoga 2 Pro sacrifices the Lift & Lock Mechanism found on the ThinkPad for a lighter and thinner body at 15.5mm & 1.39kg.

We have already reviewed the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S, and our major gripes with it were the lack of a 1080p display & a backlit keyboard – which its successors have already fixed. It looks like we’re expecting a powerful set of Ultrabooks soon.

The Yogas will be available before the year ends in time for the holiday season. The ThinkPad Yoga starts at $949 while the Yoga 2 Pro will go for $1,099. That’s Php43k & Php49k respectively when converted. To add, Windows 8.1 will also be out by then.
