As many manufacturers are now following the hype of having an impressive 6GB of RAM loaded in their high-end smartphone, is this actually something to be excited about? Have you ever wonder why do phones now have up to 6GB of RAM?
6GB PIC 1RAM, or random access memory, is the memory that temporarily stores the data into a phone which allows it to be accessed more quickly. With so many applications hogging up the memory space, one not only needs a processor with eight or more cores but also a RAM complimenting that. In addition, there are also apps that hog a lot of RAM (I’m looking at you Facebook!) and if you have more than one of the same open on your phone, then the phone might start experiencing lag.

Some processors powering our handsets these days are 64-bit, which allows this amount of data to be addressed at the same time. Now, 64-bit mobile processors already had an extension that allowed them to theoretically make use of 6GB of RAM. In addition, Android is a system that expands into the RAM available to it. This means that the more RAM you have, the more of a performance buffer you end up with.

Do you really need 6GB of RAM?

The answer could be a simple yes or no. The real benefit of having a 6GB RAM phones is future-proofing. Undoubtedly, a phone with 6GB  of RAM sounds to be  incredible for gaming and multi-tasking, and it is bound to attract folks who love the extreme performance.

As of today, having this large amount of RAM is not required. It’s just for marketing and product differentiation only. Maybe next year or two, it might come handy and will become a top end standard for all. 6 Smartphones with 6GB of RAM

Smartphones with 6GB of RAM are slowly becoming the standard for flagship devices. Although the big global brands like Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC and even Xiaomi have not yet introduced one, a few others have already made the news.

On top of the list is Vivo, a huge Asian player related to OPPO, which have made their announcement as early as March. This was followed by Lenovo, ZTE and just recently, by Asus as well.

A practically unknown brand from China also introduced the Vernee Apollo with 6GB of RAM. The device will cost $399 or about Php18,500.

Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe

6GB LPDDR4 RAM
256GB internal storage
3,000mAh battery

The Zenfone 3 Deluxe is the latest device announced with 6GB RAM, along with several other Zenfone 3 variants during Computex in Taiwan. Check out our hands-on here.

Bonus: The yet-to-be-announced OnePlus 3 has been spotted on benchmark charts to have 6GB of RAM.

LeEco unveils Le Max 2 with 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 820

LeEco, a China-based company brought out their newest flagship handset dubbed as the Le Max 2. It features a 5.7-inch QHD bezel-less display powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820  quad-core processor with a massive 6GB RAM  and Adreno 530 GPU. It also has a 3100mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support plus tri-band 4G connectivity for transfer speeds of up to 375Mbps.

The device will also be the world’s first smartphone to forgo the typical 3.5mm headphone jack and have it replaced instead by a USB Type-C port for audio, charging and data transfer connection.

There will be two variants of the LeEco Le Max 2, first is the 4GB/32GB variant priced at ¥2,100 or around $325. While the top of the line 6GB/64GB model is priced at ¥2499 or around $390 which are available in China for now.
