4.93 million private usernames and passwords from Gmail were posted to a Russian Bitcoin forum site last Tuesday, according to reports.
Google, however, does not acknowledge any security breach. They have no evidence of compromised systems, though they are looking into it. They also wanted users to use their 2-step verification log in that ensures better security than traditional methods.
Latest news about the leak is that the passwords have been removed from the forum, leaving only usernames of Gmail clients. As claimed by the forum member who posted the listing, about 60% of the passwords were valid. While there are no confirmation about this leak, sources say that these usernames and passwords could be a sum of other accounts from different websites with users of identical Gmail passwords, plus accounts from older times.
While the details about the leak are muddled, it is best to change passwords today and make sure that you don’t use a universal open sesame security pass.
