ASUS Transformer 3 hands-on, first impressions

In addition to the Zenbook 3, ASUS also launched the portable and Intel-powered Transformer 3 two-in-one PC. This is the sibling to the beefier Transformer 3 Pro that was launched altogether at Computex 2016 which is on its last day today.

From the first moment we laid eyes on it, the Transformer 3 reminded us of Microsoft’s Surface tablets due to the whole package that it comes with.

The Transformer 3 touts a 12.6-inch display that houses its 2880 x 1920 resolution panel. It is surrounded by a noticeably thick white bezel which is then accentuated by the same chrome trimmings seen on the Zenfone Ultra.

The corners are rounded which makes it easy for the palms when you remove it from its keyboard and use it as a tablet. Because of this frame, the device really felt solid on the hands.

The package includes a keyboard to be able to use it as a laptop for when you have work to finish out of the house. The keys are somewhat packed tight but we tried typing for a few moments and we could still type fast without any discomfort — as for using it continuously for hours, we’re still not sure as of yet.

The entire aluminum alloy chassis reflects yet again the company’s concentric circle design. The center of the design is emblazoned with the company’s logo which, in turn, makes it look like there is a sort of radiance emanating from the logo however the light reflects on the entire back plate.

The only component visible on the back is its 13-megapixel camera at the corner-most edge of the Transformer 3. Just like the Zenfone Ultra, the main shooter is placed in a protruding circular housing.

Up top, there’s the built-in fingerprint sensor for an added layer of securing access to the device and the volume rocker is seen right beside it.

asus-transformer-book-3-7

The device sports a 4-piece Harman Kardon speakers located at both ends of the tablet on landscape mode. The grilles indicate two of each on both sides to better scatter the sound. This is generally good, although we noticed that users have a tendency to cover some parts of the grille when they hold it up and use it as a tablet.

asus-transformer-book-3-6

The Transformer 3 is thinner than the Transformer 3 Pro with its 6.9mm profile (vs 8.35mm). Also seen here is the headset connectivity port for connecting your headphones.

asus-transformer-book-3-5

The tablet turns into a laptop as soon as the metallic pins snap to the keyboard. We’ve tried taking it out and snapping it back again and it seemed like the tablet maintains a sturdy connection to the dock once it attaches.

So far, we like how the Transformer 3 is well-built although we’re not big fans of the limited position its kickstand offers.

Although for those quick instances that users need to finish something while on-the-go, it seems like the Transformer 3 is more than capable of doing just that as it carries capable internals like a 7th-gen Intel core processor, 512GB SSD, and up to 8GB of RAM.

ASUS Transformer 3 specs:
12.6-inch (2880 x 1920) display, 275ppi
Intel 7th-gen core processor (Kaby Lake)
512GB SSD
up to 8GB RAM
13MP main camera
Intel Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C
Harman/Kardon quad-speaker
Fingerprint scanner
Full-sized backlit keyboard (Transformer Sleeve Keyboard)
Glass covered Touchpad
9 hours battery life
6.9mm thin

ASUS Zenbook 3 hands-on, first impressions

Announced along with the Zenfone 3 handsets are three computing devices namely the Transformer 3, Transformer 3 Pro, and Zenbook 3. We’ll first take a look at the ASUS Zenbook 3 which the company has pegged to go up against Apple’s Macbook in terms of performance but with a more affordable price. Here’s our hands-on and first impressions on it.

asus-zenbook-3-1

The Zenbook 3 features a 12.5-inch display which is a tad bigger than the latesst Macbook’s 12-inch screen. It comes in Full HD resolution and is nicely fitted with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 for added protection against scratches.

asus-zenbook-3-8

The chassis features an all-metal build and the company used aerospace-grade aluminum which they claim is stronger than what other companies use. The Zenbook 3 also weighs lighter than the Macbook (910g vs 970g) so it’s evident that ASUS is serious in bringing an alternative to users looking for such laptops.

The aptly-sized touch pad has an embedded fingerprint scanner on the top right corner for added security. It has an embossed border surrounding the scanner which visually adds a nice touch.

asus-zenbook-3-6

The Zenbook 3 sports a 4-piece speaker system and you can find two of them at the opposite sides just above the keyboard. Additionally, the keys are spaced out nicely which makes for fast typing.

asus-zenbook-3-4

The chassis has a break at the middle to easily open the lid. Also seen here is the gold accent running along the entire edge of the lid which I personally love about the Zenbook 3. Simple touches like these, for me, is a product of careful thinking and planning in terms of design.

asus-zenbook-3-5

Speaking of careful planning, ASUS made its Zenbook 3 as thin as possible. It touts a 11.9mm thin form factor and once again one-ups the latest Macbook with its 13mm profile. This should prove useful when traveling as it can easily slide in and out of a backpack with ease.

asus-zenbook-3-9

The sides feature a sleek and minimalist design with the headphone jack on the left and a USB Type-C port on the right side for charging and transferring files. It is evident that users wouldn’t get much connectivity options which is an understandable trade-off for having a thin and light physique.

asus-zenbook-3-12

Turning it over, we see the additional two speakers facing down that bounces off sound using the surface it’s on.

asus-zenbook-3-11

At its rear, there’s a simple labeling printed under the gold strip running around the lid. It’s a nice touch to give a subtle yet effective accent on a rather dull area of the Zenbook.

asus-zenbook-3-10

Lastly, the most attention-grabbing aspect of the Ultrabook’s design is its lid. ASUS is deeply-rooted with its Zen philosophy which is conveyed through its concentric circle design also seen on the Zenfone lineup. This results to a “spinning light” kind of illusion depending on what angle you look at.

From the short time that we had with the Zenbook 3, we fell in love with how it generally looks and we’re even more impressed with how thin, light, and solidly-built it was.

Inside, this laptop is no slouch either as it packs an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD. It comes in three variants with the other two having a 512GB SSD and a Core i5 with 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD. They are priced at $1,999, $1,499, and $999, respectively.

xiaomi-mi-drone-1

Xiaomi Mi Drone specs:
4K or Full HD video recording
3-axis gimbal
GPS, GLONASS
5100mAh battery
27mins of claimed flight time

Additional features of the Mi Drone include modular parts like the rotors, camera module, and battery which can be easily removed and attached for better portability and serviceability. It also has several flight modes like return to home, waypoint navigation, orbit, and takeoff/landing in addition to setting a specific area to keep its movement.

The Full HD model is at CNY2,499 (approx. Php18K) while the Mi Drone that shoots 4K resolution videos is more expensive at CNY2,999 (approx. Php21K). Even then Xiaomi’s drone is still much more affordable compared to the frontrunners like DJI’s Phantom 4 which is about Php70K.

Just like other drones, the Mi Drone relies on a smartphone paired to its included remote control to serve as the viewfinder.

The Full HD drone is said to be crowdfunded on the Mi Home app starting today while the 4K version will be available for testing on an open beta program by the end of June.
