Average LTE in PH is 8Mbps, one of the slowest in the world

As part of OpenSignal’s report and in addition to our previous article showing the average speed of both Smart and Globe, the data shows that Philippines has an average LTE speed of 8Mbps — one of the slowest in the world.

opensignal globe smart_2

With Globe and Smart averaging 11Mbps and 5Mbps respectively, it results to 8Mbps average which puts us in the same ranking as South Africa, Ecuador, and Thailand. Sad to say,  it’s pretty clear that we’re the bunch that are on the bottom part of the list as ranked by speed.

Methodology

The company drew data from the hundreds of thousands of OpenSignal users that have LTE-capable phones and connect to operators with live 4G networks. That data was collected in three months between June and August.

Google announces OnHub Wi-Fi router

With all the hassle of setting up your Internet router — from routing the cables to establishing a working connection, it’s not really an exciting task whenever you get a new one. Google aims to minimize that by announcing the OnHub Wi-Fi router that aims to provide a really easy solution in setting up a connection at home.

Partnering with TP-Link, the OnHub router has a tall, cylindrical design which is designed not to be hidden behind TVs or down on the floor where signal interference is common. By making it look attractive, Google aims for users to position the device somewhere without obstruction that would yield better performance.

The device has 13 antennas — 12 of which for signal and one for checking the strength of the signal within the area. According to the company, here’s how OnHub works during installation:

“OnHub searches the airwaves and selects the best channel for the fastest connection. A unique antenna design and smart software keep working in the background, automatically adjusting OnHub to avoid interference and keep your network at peak performance. You can even prioritize a device, so that your most important activity — like streaming your favorite show — gets the fastest speed.”

To help in setting up and managing your Wi-Fi, there is a dedicated app called Google On that shows some important details like how much bandwidth is being used up by the devices and at the same time troubleshoots issues with the Wi-Fi.

OnHub is in an exclusive partership with TP-Link..for now. Google says it will also be producing their routers with ASUS as their second partner soon, so watch out for that. The Google OnHub is already available for pre-order for $199.

Sen. Bam Aquino wants explanation from NTC on delayed Internet standards

Because of the investigation that Senator Bam Aquino had conducted late last year regarding the sluggish and unreliable Internet in the Philippines, the National Telecommunications Commission has promised to come up with a memorandum circular that unfortunately still hasn’t been delivered until now and the senator wants to know why.

The NTC agreed to set the standards (like minimum speeds for broadband and DSL) on Internet quality services for the Philippines — which was back in the beginning of 2015. The senator mentions that their budget for next year “depends heavily” on their report.

“Six months have passed since the NTC committed to come out with the memorandum circular but until now, the agency has yet to deliver on its promise,” said Sen. Bam, chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship.

The he adds, “the NTC must provide a detailed and acceptable report on its recent moves to improve the country’s Internet connection service as the approval of their 2016 budget heavily depends on that.”

We’ve previously reported that the hearings look promising (and maybe they really are, if pulled off), but Senator Bam believes that these undisclosed standards  will be “detrimental to the welfare of millions of Internet users in the country.”

So for now we wait.
